Judgmentality··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
As someone who hates how ugly modern cars have become, I can also acknowledge the extraordinary leap in safety they've achieved since then. Many of the rules are designed around safety.

Although a counterpoint to this is the giant A pillars limit visibility so much as to be dangerous themselves.

Okay, I admit I'm frustrated but I can tell you're not trying to be harmful. I think I'll just let this one simmer for a bit.

For what it's worth, I really wasn't saying those things about HN out of pettiness or bitterness. Thank you for engaging with me. Cheers.

So my comment got upvotes from multiple people, a random person came by to tell you you're wrong about your judgment (and reaffirmed it when you questioned him), and yet there is no plausible interpretation of my comment not being harmful? Dan, you need to take a look in the mirror here. You don't seem interested in asking yourself "is it possible I'm wrong?" Actions speak louder than words. And once again, I think you should lead be example.

I give up. I assume you're just going to ban me anyway.

Okay, but why aren't you giving my comment the most charitable interpretation and instead assuming the worst? You say to take the most charitable interpretation but don't do so yourself. Your words don't match your actions. You're being a hypocrite.

I fully believe you care and are trying. I also understand there will always be subjective ambiguity and that's fine. In the past we have disagreed and I have later come to acknowledge I was wrong. But if you keep pointing towards rules you don't live by yourself you're undermining the quality of this forum. And I acknowledge mistakes happen and that's fine. But it really feels different lately.

So if you truly care about the quality of HN, do yourself a favor and be more introspective with your moderation. Especially when you are the only person who believes I am being unruly here (as far as I can tell). I'm not saying this to attack you. I'm saying this as someone who has loved this forum for years but is worried about it getting worse.

Cheers.

How is this a personal attack? Besides that, you already removed the parent comment so nobody can even find this now without clicking my profile.

> I think this just might not be your cup of tea. That's fine. We all have our preferences.

I don't see how I could be any nicer.

> Please respond to the strongest plausible interpretation of what someone says, not a weaker one that's easier to criticize. Assume good faith.

I feel like you're ignoring your own guidelines. Please lead by example.

Judgmentality··on H1B rejected – builds unicorn back home
How is this any different from saying you would avoid a black/Hispanic/minority doctor in the United States? The US also has affirmative action for medical schools. If anything this problem would be worse in the US, since it's harder to determine race by name here.

Your comment reads as thinly veiled casteism/racism.

I'm somewhat familiar with the 12 steps. As far as I can tell the core premise is to give in to a "higher power." This feels very similar to a cult to me, in the sense that it's learned helplessness and that the only way you can ever have value is by giving in to the group/god/whatever. I am not saying 12 steps is a cult because it exists to help/cure addiction and it does so with mixed results. But the history of the program is very obviously centered around religion.

If you aren't already in such dire straits as to require this kind of help, it really seems like a form of self-harm to me. I've met many people who've gone through 12 steps. Some advocate for it, some protest it. I'm genuinely happy for people to get the help they need wherever they can find it. But I absolutely would not recommend it to someone that isn't already so desperate that they're willing to give up their autonomy because they don't know what else to do.

Judgmentality··on Stripe down for 4 hours (and counting) for all those with Stripe Tax enabled
> Some people just care and willing to lend a hand in cases where they can help.

Why don't they (whoever at the company is in a position to make a difference) care before there is bad publicity? It's either incompetence or indifference. krisoft left another comment already that explains it quite well. There is little - if any - reason to give Stripe the benefit of the doubt here, and there are a lot of reasons to believe it's intentional.

That's like asking why people don't explain jokes. You get it or you don't. Not everything is meant for you.

I should join AA if I have social anxiety or existential dread? Considering GP's comment, this is a worthless response. Also it wouldn't even apply to people that don't drink, such as myself. I'm glad AA helped you but you chose the wrong comment to reply to.
Judgmentality··on High-speed rail board completes environmental clearance in northern California
> There isn't many people in the USA that love the idea of driving their car to ride a train so that they can then rent a car to get where they are going.

You've just described airports, except with trains instead of planes. If I could take a train instead of fly I would.

Judgmentality··on Google execs threaten workers with layoffs: ‘There will be blood on the streets’
If people are quitting then people are quitting. Whether or not that is a bad idea doesn't seem to matter right now. Maybe it will matter in the future but that's not today.

Employee: I quit.

Employer: That's a bad idea!

Employee: Thanks for the advice. Bye.

Judgmentality··on Google execs threaten workers with layoffs: ‘There will be blood on the streets’
> Of course, this needs to be weighed against the risk of everyone being upset and leaving after such a decision, but in this market, that risk may be mitigated.

The market where people are already quitting?

> Were it otherwise civil courts would have lots of free time.

Laws don't have to matter for you to waste a court's time. In fact dragging out court cases is a common legal tactic.

> The legal system isn't known for being the corruption oasis that movies make it out to be.

Your experience differs from mine. It also differs from most lawyers I know. Lawyers aren't famous for drinking heavily because they think they're making the world a better place.

Why do you think the court system works? What country do you live in?

Judgmentality··on Justin Kan: Web3 games don’t need to lure players with profit
So basically blockchain is going to coincidentally solve a problem that it's not explicitly needed for? Honestly I can see this happening, but regardless of it being blockchain or a vanilla API it's worthless without everybody (game developers, game publishers, gamers, marketplace owners) agreeing to work on it together. The assets only have value if they're portable, and they're only portable if everybody agrees the assets are valuable enough to spend time/money/infrastructure supporting. It's a very weird chicken-and-egg problem and I think it's a long way from being solved. Part of the reason is because some of the necessary players see a financial incentive not to solve this problem.

The problem with his argument about stablecoins is he didn't actually mention Tether, he just said whatever isn't failing. So basically after Tether fails the goal posts are moved and now all the stablecoins that haven't failed yet are held up as an example of success.

Speaking of Tether, it's lost 25% of its market cap since May.

The person you're responding to never said or implied there is no spectrum. But if someone says "I'm very much anti-NIMBY" and then goes on to point out his hypocrisy, it's fair to call him out for it. Especially since said someone specifically asked for criticism and seems open to a conversation.

Everybody wants to change the world but nobody wants to change themselves.

Judgmentality··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
> Who cares about your friend's dead dad, I was at the gym and misread/misremembered.

Your ability to incorrectly read what I wrote so many times is impressive. My friend's dad isn't dead.

You have demonstrated more than once a complete inability to fact check the most basic things, and yet you pontificate as if you are an expert. Have you ever considered you may have accidentally gotten many of your other assumptions wrong? If your worldview is anything like this conversation, it's built on incorrect assumptions and you being confident about something objectively false. You are demonstrating that you have the reading comprehension of a 3rd grader and expect me to take you seriously.

You've already discredited yourself multiple times. I don't respect you enough to read your sources, the same way you can't even correctly read the sentences I write. If you are so sure you are right, why do you care what I think? I never claimed to be struggling with my health, and yet you keep offering advice on how to improve it. You are having an argument with yourself and you don't even recognize it. It's obvious you don't listen, but you need therapy.

I hope you get the help that you need, but something tells me you'd refuse it even if it were available.

Judgmentality··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
My friend's dad has stage 3 renal failure, not cancer. I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about and you're just rambling now. Enjoy your self-contained bubble of delusion where nobody can harm you (except yourself, but you'd need to be self-aware to realize that).

Cheers.

> You randomly got one that confirmed your bias.

When I listen to someone tell me objective data I'm confirming a bias I never had to begin with? The amount of projecting you're doing is extraordinary. If a doctor told you your kidneys were failing after getting them tested (I already linked the research for you to read, but clearly you're afraid of information that doesn't confirm your bias), would you then go find a doctor that tells you your kidneys are fine? Your fear of information is literally going to kill you. This is the mentality that leads to anti-vaxxing.

> If you are open minded for real check

This is ironic since you're not even open-minded to listening to a doctor, or medical research, or anything that disagrees with what you already think you know.

You are a perfect example of the Dunning Kruger effect.

Judgmentality··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
I don't want to continue a flame war, but I want to respond to this:

> 2. Find a doctor that agrees with your opinion. Whatever it is you will find one.

I don't want a doctor to confirm my bias. I want a doctor to give me objective data about my health.

Judgmentality··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
If someone suggests something is a cure all for everyone, and a doctor says that cure all is killing someone, and there's medical research backing up the doctor - I'm going to trust the doctor.

My N=1 anecdote is a counterexample that has medical research to back it up. Or are you discrediting the person's anecdote about a carnivorous diet being healthy?
