We do use 120V for normal household outlets. Still, it’s not like we are waiting hours for the kettle to boil.

JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick.

Story of the survivors of a sunken whale ship after a sperm whale attack. A source of inspiration for Moby Dick.

JoyfulTurkey··on Biggest shell programs
Dealing with this at work right now. Digging through thousands of lines of Bash. This script wasn’t written a long time ago, so no clue why they went with Bash.

The script works but it always feels like something is going to break if I look at the code the wrong way.

JoyfulTurkey··on Automatic braking systems save lives. Now they'll need to work at 62 MPH
I have a 2019 Impreza with the Eyesight tech and I have only had it engage the AEB a couple of times since purchasing it in Feb 2019.

Maybe something is out of whack with your cameras?

JoyfulTurkey··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
Netflix has some NFL games on Christmas Day. Wonder how those will go for them.

I remember when ESPN started streaming years back, it was awful. Now I almost never have problems with their live events, primarily their NHL streams.

JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Who Wants a Penpal?
My go to game on our local BBS was Legend of the Red Dragon.
JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Who Wants a Penpal?
RIP ICQ. I met met quite a few long distance chat friends on there. Never met anyone in person from there, though.

In my area, we had the Cleveland Freenet with an IRC server. Met a lot of friends in real life from there—I believe they also had periodic picnic meetups but I never went to one of those. Briefly dated someone in HS after we met in an IRC channel, and one of my real life friends met his future wife on a freenet in neighboring state that we could access.

I also had a personal site that a random girl my age a few states over found. She emailed me and we started corresponding for years over email, AOL/AIM and hand written letters. We still do on occasion. We met in person about 13 years after we first emailed.

JoyfulTurkey··on Why are shopping carts always broken?
Where I am (Ohio, USA), drug stores like CVS/Wallgreens sell beer, wine.

Hard liquor over a certain alcohol percent is only available at a state liquor agency.

JoyfulTurkey··on Read fewer books and feel better about it
My wife, former librarian, introduced me to the rule of 50 of Nancy Pearl (famous librarian from Seattle Public Library). Essentially, if you aren’t feeling a book after 50 pages, you should feel no guilt putting it aside.

Recently, it seems Nancy has revisited the rule and adjusted for the 50+ crowd. If you are over 50, subtract your age from 100 and use that as your cut off for putting a book aside.

JoyfulTurkey··on California Pizza Huts lay off all delivery drivers ahead of minimum wage increas
I think “free” in the sense that it was the same price whether you picked it up or had the place deliver. You only had to tip the driver. This was for delivery only places like Dominos/local chains near me.

The couple of dollars extra for delivery fees started maybe in the mid/late 2000s where I am (midwest USA).

JoyfulTurkey··on How the Mac didn’t bring programming to the people
The biggest advantage I found when learning on DOS and Windows in the 1990s was the overall lack of distractions. No smart phone, YouTube, Reddit/HackerNews let me fully concentrate.
JoyfulTurkey··on Aardvark'd: The Fog Creek documentary, 18 years later
The office with a door thing was how Microsoft was back in the day, if I remember correct. From the stories I heard, some of the offices were ridiculously small/narrow but they still had a door.

Joel was a Program Manager for Excel at MS so my guess is he brought that mindset over.

Really, I wish more places would go back to that. Being able to work with minimal interruptions is great.

JoyfulTurkey··on The entrance fee to America’s museums keeps rising
The general collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art (https://www.clevelandart.org/) is still free. If you are in the University Circle area of Cleveland, definitely recommend.
JoyfulTurkey··on Twist: Slack alternative from the makers of Todoist
I agree on the notifications thing.

A few friends and I are doing some side consulting and decided to use a Google Space within our public Gmail accounts. It has worked great and I haven't missed a thing, especially with the Gmail app on the phone, but I can mute pretty easily if I want to.

JoyfulTurkey··on Fastmail Is Down
Other mail systems should hopefully be configured for retry up to a few days.

So I wouldn't think the mails should bounce unless someone used a really short retry period.

"Retries continue until the message is transmitted or the sender gives up; the give-up time generally needs to be at least 4-5 days." from RFC 5321

JoyfulTurkey··on macOS Developer Setup
I received a M1 Mac for my most recent job a few years back after years of Windows at work. The window management drove me nuts on MacOS until I found rectangle. I don’t know how stuff like that is not native to the OS
JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: How's the Job Hunt Going?
I have been wondering the same. Depending on the job posting and how the company looks online, I have selectively left off lots of experience and simply said "10+ years of experience"
JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: How's the Job Hunt Going?
USA based, I am right around 20 years into my career in IT Ops.

A little over two weeks of submissions, 20 sent and 4 rejections so far.

JoyfulTurkey··on Don’t Talk to Police (2012) [video]
I feel weird without it and I always carry my ID in the US, even when just going for a walk around the neighborhood.

Not hard for me since it’s in my wallet and I use one of those slim wallets and don’t carry many other cards and don’t stash receipts in the bill area like some people do.

Ah nice, I will follow up on that. Thanks for the info!
JoyfulTurkey··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
I haven't been paying close attention to all of the spez/Apollo stuff, was there actually any evidence from either side? Last I saw it was mostly just each party posting contradictory text in replies.
JoyfulTurkey··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
Damn, just looked at this account signup date and mine is older than it. Feeling ancient on a Monday morning :)
JoyfulTurkey··on New Massachusetts right-to-repair law now being enforced
In this filing I see:

GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Chrysler, Kia, Hyundai, Subaru, Volkswagen, Mazda USA, BMW, Jaguar, Volvo, Tesla, Mitsubishi, Daimler Mercedes-Benz USA

Pretty much all of the big names. Not sure what auto manufacturer you could buy a car from in the future.
