JoyfulTurkey··on Office Cubicle Manufacturing (1954) [video]
That is good to hear. Currently fully remote, but workspace will definitely be a criteria if I move on to a place with an office.
JoyfulTurkey··on Office Cubicle Manufacturing (1954) [video]
I never minded working in a cubicle when I started working professionally in the early 00s. For me, it was around 1000% times better than around 2015 when the place I worked at went to full open office.

Probably the nicest I had was a shared private office with someone on my team. Got privacy and the ability to collaborate at the same time.

JoyfulTurkey··on Pirated books thrive on Amazon
I have had this happen with a few O’Reilly books purchased from Amazon. The paper was ridiculously thin and I could see the page edges from photocopying all throughout the book. Amazon did accept the returns. I don’t like what Amazon has turned into, it used to be such a great place to shop online. Now it’s mostly garbage.
JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
I was a teenager in the 90s and also had a personal site. Somehow got onto a link repository site called nerd world and a girl from a few states away (USA) found the page and emailed me. It started a long, remote friendship through the rest of high school and college via letters, AIM, and email. We still keep in contact every now and then.
JoyfulTurkey··on Portable Django
Maybe they just really like True Religion jeans?
JoyfulTurkey··on Apple I operation manual (1976) [pdf]
A mockup version of this for the Apple II recently popped up on Antiques Roadshow. An Apple employee grabbed it out of a dumpster in the late 80s. Appraised at $10,000-15,000.

JoyfulTurkey··on What I Think About LeBron Breaking My NBA Scoring Record
By this logic Robert Horry is better than Jordan. No one thinks Robert Horry is better than Jordan.
JoyfulTurkey··on What I Think About LeBron Breaking My NBA Scoring Record
Championships are a team accomplishment. Sure, an individual player can have a larger impact in a sport like basketball since someone can play almost the entire game if necessary, but it’s not like singles tennis where one player determines the outcome.

Did you watch LeBron when he was younger, or just looking at stats?

JoyfulTurkey··on What I Think About LeBron Breaking My NBA Scoring Record
Luka isn’t the most explosive or athletic player out there. Once he loses a step his game will regress a lot.

LeBron was at another level of athleticism when he came out of HS. Him losing a step did not have as large of an impact. He basically has been able to have a “prime” that has lasted his whole career.

JoyfulTurkey··on NSA wooing thousands of laid-off Big Tech workers for spy agency's hiring spree
I was a reference for a friend in college that applied to intern at the CIA. I had someone in my dorm room asking me questions and there questions related to drug use.

My friend barely drank alcohol and never used illegal drugs, but the interviewer pressed a few times even saying things like “come on, not even once? everyone does in college”

As for why I agreed to talk? He wanted the position, so I was glad to help if I could.

JoyfulTurkey··on Intermittent Fasting Completely Reverses Type 2 Diabetes in Study
Maybe cold brew? I felt it was less acidic and bitter when I used to make it. I have a Toddy and with that maker you end up with a concentrate that you dilute with either hot or cold water.
JoyfulTurkey··on Intermittent Fasting Completely Reverses Type 2 Diabetes in Study
I’ve always drank liquids in the AM even when doing IF. Just water or straight black coffee. Or are you taking the coffee with cream and sugar?
JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Why Read Books?
With literature, I like that reading a great novel gives me access to the mind of people more intelligent than me :)

For technical, I find retain the information better when I read as a opposed to watching a video.

JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I have generally been against piracy. My one carve out has been live sporting events like NFL games. Due to the local games being chosen by networks, it's difficult to get specific games. Maybe I could get direct TV but it seems excessively expensive.

For everything else, like music, movies, tv shows, etc., I hope people at least try to see if a local library system near you has access to the material.

JoyfulTurkey··on Fun, danger, and 70s airplane toys
I had one of these in the 80s, a P-51 Mustang.

I vaguely recall it being annoying to start, but was with my dad so he definitely helped with getting it going. We had a bunch of soccer fields behind where we lived, so we flew it there to avoid any accidents.

It did eventually crash, but was fun while it lasted.

JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Which videogames are worth playing in 2023?
Still hitting up Quake Live on Stream.

There’s a small but regular community still playing. I prefer Freeze Tag mode, usually the Pill Chicago server. Clan Arena mode is too rough for a casual player, in my experience. FFA is OK.

For strategy games, my go to is original StarCraft. Blizzard released a remastered version a few years back. I think it’s usually around ten dollars?

JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2022 and recommend for 2023
I seem to recall a bit of controversy about the 1619 Project when it first came out?

JoyfulTurkey··on More than 100 new designs discovered in Peru’s ancient Nazca plain
NOVA on PBS just had an episode on the Nazca geoglyphs. If you have an interest in this and have PBS Passport you can watch it on their site or streaming device. For my local station, a monthly donation of $5 is the minimum for Passport.

JoyfulTurkey··on Legacy Update: Fix Windows Update on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2008, 2003, 2000
My personal choice for best Windows is Windows 2000. It was amazingly stable when I used it in college.

I remember going to a MS sponsored talk on campus when it was in beta and we got free beta copies that were labeled NT 5 Beta!

Traded that for a copy of original Starcraft. Now, I wish I would have kept it.

JoyfulTurkey··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
Non-fiction: Finally got around to reading The Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder. A great read that captures the feeling of being on project with great teammates that care and want to “win” Haven’t felt that way in a while at work, but currently kicking around a project with some friends after hours and it feels good to have people that all care about the project.

Fiction: Red Crosses by Sasha Filipenko

JoyfulTurkey··on New York City hiring top rat killer
Raccoons poop can be particularly nasty. Raccoon roundworm eggs are incredibly hardy. Thankfully human cases are incredibly rare, but I wouldn’t want to increase the population I am around.
JoyfulTurkey··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
Yes and can be beneficial sometimes. For example, in the case of something like kale or spinach cooking reduces goitrogens IIRC.
JoyfulTurkey··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
I have always wondered just how many accidental casualties occur with harvesting equipment. I guess home garden is the best bet if it’s a concern?
JoyfulTurkey··on Elm at a Billion Dollar Company with Vendr CTO Aaron White [audio]
Saw this post title and immediately my mind went to Elm, the text based email client from years ago. Such fond memories of getting a shell account and using it and Pine in the 90s in HS.
JoyfulTurkey··on Nextgenhacker101 – How to view someones IP address and connection speed (2008)
Classic YouTube video. Wonder what kind of hacking Nextgenhacker101 is up to these days.
JoyfulTurkey··on A nationwide shortage of public workers
It has definitely been a trend at the public entity where she works. When full time employees leave/retire, two part-time positions are created to replace that person instead of hiring one full-time employee.
JoyfulTurkey··on A nationwide shortage of public workers
My wife is looking to change jobs in the midwest of the US. When we search, however, the majority of openings are less than full time and have no health insurance benefits.

And she is a public employee and looking to stay in the public sector.

JoyfulTurkey··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
Wow, 20 kilos in less than 2 months seems like a heck of a lot. Any issues with gallstones?

I lost a nice bit of weight at the start of the pandemic when I stopped drinking (primarily a beer drinker). It is really surprising how much of an effect it can have.

JoyfulTurkey··on The container orchestrator landscape
I fully agree. Docker Swarm was perfect for my small employer with an IT staff of 3 people. Went with the 3 manager nodes, as recommended by Docker, to allow for upgrades without downtime, and things were rock solid.

Also liked that encryption of the overlay networks was included.

The only thing we missed/wanted was auto-scaling built-in, but we rarely had a need to scale the number of containers.

JoyfulTurkey··on Why is a registry file called a “hive”? (2003)
I had a feeling this was going to be a Raymond Chen post. Loved reading the Old New Thing back in the day. Amazingly it looks like it is still going strong.
