Joona··on Ask HN: How do you perceive numbers?
I don't get any kind of image, they are just numbers.
Joona··on Chrome Blocks Major Torrent Sites Over "Harmful Programs"
From the article:

Update: ExtraTorrent says it successfully resolved
the issue with Google through webmaster tools.
    RARBG is also unblocked.
Joona··on Show HN: YouTube Filesystem – YTFS
It's just a gray screen for me in both HTML5 and Flash players, though if I download the video and play it in MPC-HC it's fine. Weird stuff!
Joona··on Show HN: YouTube Filesystem – YTFS
Speaking of corruption, I found this[1] video a while back. On mobile the video shows up fine, but on desktop it's just a gray screen, although the thumbnails work.

Joona··on Tesla Beats Delivery Forecast with 52% Quarterly Surge
Why couldn't Tesla become the Ferrari of electric cars?
Joona··on Ask HN: Will VR (Oculus) be a hit?
I don't think it will be a hit, yet anyway. The tech is still too new, and requires a lot of improvements. It also doesn't work for every game (FPS' are terrible, but driving games are great), and I don't really see that changing.

In a few years, once it's better overall, I don't see why it couldn't become commonplace. Currently it's just not good enough.

Joona··on Why doesn't Windows recognize a USB device plugged into another port? (2004)
Sure is. Just plugged in my USB sound card again yesterday, different port I suppose, and the settings reset.
Joona··on A YouTube built for gamers
I don't think seeing someones _eyes_ matters that much. Reactions are much more than that. One of the most popular streamers (Lirik) does not use a camera at all, so all you get is his voice and the gameplay.

VR itself is a bit different though, as not everyone will have Rift/etc, so either you are streaming to a very limited audience, or there has to be a way of capturing the footage before it's transformed, and even then, it's just one eye, so the viewers are missing stuff.

Joona··on Hola VPN Already Exploited by “Bad Guys”, Security Firm Says
>They have also been able to get him banned from Twitch via his IP.

This sounds like they have access to his computer (with a RAT or something). You shouldn't be getting IP banned unless you actually break Twitch rules from that IP.

Joona··on Making and Using Non-Standard Textures: Manipulating UVs Through Color Data [pdf]
Valve has a lot of interesting publications on their site: http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/publications.html
Joona··on Using Waifu2x to Upscale Japanese Prints
I did a quick comparison between ImageMagick and Waifu2x using a common anime-style image: http://imgur.com/a/teKVY
Joona··on Ask HN: How much do you sleep at night?
6-7 hours, but I would like to sleep 8-9 hours.
Joona··on Tell HN: Go to Google Maps. Type Your Twitter Handle (with @)
Doesn't seem to work here (Finland) either.
Joona··on How is Javascript used within the Spotify desktop application?
And they don't even support FLAC!
Joona··on Estonia e-residency application now online
From https://e-estonia.com/e-residents/about/

e-Residency does not confer citizenship, tax residency, residence
or right of entry to Estonia or to the European Union.
The e-Resident smart ID card is not a physical identification
or a travel document, and does not display a photo.
Joona··on Estonia e-residency application now online
Interestingly the application page/subdomain is not HTTPS, but the main site is.
Joona··on Ask HN: What is the future of Smart Glasses?
They won't probably be glasses, but rather some sort of implant to your eye. That's pretty far off though, and I would like to get something like Google Glass, just higher resolution (and battery capacity).
Joona··on Weak Homegrown Crypto Dooms Open Smart Grid Protocol
Yes, use existing libraries.
Joona··on Ask HN: What do you love about programming? What is your favorite field?
I'm just doing programming as a hobby right now, though slowly making my way towards getting some education in it...

I love being able to solve a problem. Figuring out how to do something, and then building it, fixing it as you figure out what's wrong with it is great.

Joona··on Ask HN: What's your favorite mouse
G500s.

After my G500 broke after a few years of heavy use, I bought a RAT 7, which was terrible. Uncomfortable and a bad sensor. Returned it, got a G500s, couldn't be happier. It's just a good mouse.

Joona··on Valve shuts down paid mod system after pressure from gamers
Yeah, they ONLY removed it from Skyrim. Other games will be getting it (although probably modified).
Joona··on Ask HN: How long until 4k video is mainstream?
Really depends on when 4K monitors are affordable and most countries have high-speed internet.

4K monitors are still pretty pricey. I'd be more willing to purchase one once I can replace both my 120Hz monitor and my secondary with them. Then again, what's the point of getting a 4K monitor, when most of what I do is gaming, and GPUs can't really do 4K yet?

Here (in Finland) you can already get cheap, high-speed internet (no caps), so it's not a problem for us, but who's going to offer a service that's more expensive to run (compared to 1080p video) to such a small possible customer base?

When USA (and other large countries) get better internet, I'm sure the services will follow.

Joona··on The Woman Who Ate Chernobyl's Apples
I remember seeing a documentary like that on Finnish TV a couple of years back, but it wasn't just about the wolves - it included other animals too. They seem to be doing very well.

Do you happen to remember the name of the documentary? It sounds very interesting.

Joona··on How to see everything you’ve Googled while logged in
Don't worry - it's not THAT great. Mine went back to 2007, and taking a quick look it didn't really remind me of anything.

Maybe I should disable it...

Joona··on Android’s 10 Millisecond Problem explained
Imagine if you were playing an instrument, and your hand moved a little (36ms) before any sound came out.

Or imagine trying to listen to your own voice, but having the sound delayed by that 35ms, so it feels like someone is talking over you every time you open your mouth.

Joona··on French National Assembly approved Internet traffic monitoring system (French)
Did they release an English translation of that?

(Google Translate link: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&u=https%3... )

Joona··on Ask HN: When Should We Use Down Votes?
For comments, if it does not contribute to the discussion at all, it should (probably) be downvoted.
Joona··on Trackers and bank accounts
Interestingly, the same bank rolled out a new website last year, with no notification of it being updated to the customers. Just found myself staring at an unknown site one day.
Joona··on YouTube's paid subscription offering takes shape
> It means the channel owner can't just accept the free viewing model exclusively.

I pray that I'm either misunderstanding you, or you are misunderstanding Youtube. Partners must be able to choose whether they want videos to be shown to subscribers only, or for everyone. There can NOT be any forced exclusive deals for subscribers.

Joona··on YouTube's paid subscription offering takes shape
I think they are simply trying to force all partners to accept the new terms.
