JonnyNova··on Sedate a Plant, and It Seems to Lose Consciousness. Is It Conscious?
Alan Watts has talked about something very similar with regard to what is intelligence and how exactly do we measure and define it. Here is a short (1m20s) youtube clip of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgZ73Lc5VS8
JonnyNova··on Bitcoin Drops Below $8,000 as Cryptocurrency Pain Continues
Faith in cryptos in general is founded on BTC. Also, almost all alt-coins are priced in BTC.

You were smart and lucky to buy in early. Most people did not and are already wiped out.
JonnyNova··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
For people that respond, could you also give reasons to why you miss the site?
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
The apples to oranges is in reference to comparing Bitcoin to the AI's as a whole. AI as a whole survived the winter but a random implementation from 1985 did not. My comment was comparing Bitcoin as an implementation of a cryptocurrency to previous implementations of AI that have generated hype and then became either irrelevant or obsolete.
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
That wrongfully assumes the whoever is (if it is being) manipulating Bitcoin now will have an incentive to run another scheme again in the future.
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
Apples to oranges, Bitcoin isn't cryptos as a whole. Future cryptos will absolutely succeed Bitcoin.
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
People aren't assuming they are engaging in fraudulent behavior - there is evidence showing that they are. All they have to do to show they aren't is provide an audit.
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
It still needs to add up to the worth of the dollars they claim to have in circulation. One 100 trillion Zimbabwe note isn't going to cut it.

> No reason it cant go from $20000 to $5000 and recover.

There are plenty of reasons why it could never recover. The previous cycles happened with a very different environment and context for bitcoin. This time Bitcoin has just hit mainstream. This cycle will very likely crush the mainstream's faith in Bitcoin to where it will never recover.

JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
Very much this. Bitcoin is going to have problems scaling both on and off chain. Newer technology can re-examining of proven methodologies will probably yield a better way forward.
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
A return to the mean. The same will go for alt-coins since because faith in cryptos is founded on BTC and most alt-coins are priced in BTC.
JonnyNova··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
Not necessarily. I don't believe Tether has the backing they claim. Given that though, the subpoena wasn't public yet and it is plausible clients may have been continuing to send Tether money during that time.
JonnyNova··on Bitfinex fails to perform promised audits
Why would they need to? They could just print more tether. Even easier money.
JonnyNova··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases
The US military is ass-backwards when it comes to dealing with technology.

Want to transfer files between computers? Can't use a thumb drive! You need to burn a disk (for real).

JonnyNova··on Steve Yegge Quits, Saying Google Is 100% Competitor Focused
Companies change as they get bigger because of increasing risk. The company has more value and making big gambles risky ventures with a large company starts to become irresponsible.

Title can be misleading. It is about Satoshi the quantity, not Satoshi the person.
JonnyNova··on Turning Down a Blockchain Job Offer
A non-crypto solution wouldn't have to have all of these features. These are just some of the possible desirable ones.
JonnyNova··on Turning Down a Blockchain Job Offer
Not necessarily. Lack of centralized trust is just one feature. They have other features like public (but anonymous) ledgers, irreversible transactions, smart contracts, the ability to hold them without a bank account. Features like those could definitely come from a private or central bank.

Didn't mean to leave that out. Added it in
JonnyNova··on Bitcoin.org removes “fast” and “low fees” from Bitcoin description page
They were absolutely the main features of Bitcoin when it first came around.

JonnyNova··on Ask HN: If you had a month of free time, what would you do?
The people most afraid of this are the most in need of it.

JonnyNova··on Cryptocurrency bloodbath continues as Bitcoin falls below $10,000
I disagree on the bubble comment. Rightfully so only of the two camps will eventually be right as to the current potential state of bubble. Splitting the difference between the two opinions because the two sides felt strongly about it is the age old centrist trap that gets us nowhere.

As for the end of bitcoin/cryptos - I hope not. A bursting of this bubble is hopefully just a rite of passage so that they can mature and gain adoption. Basically everyone knows what they are now.

JonnyNova··on Cryptocurrency bloodbath continues as Bitcoin falls below $10,000
Because of the falling price forced people out of the network and reduced both network congestion and transfer fee prices.

Moon or payments? Pick one.

Many people have been calling this a bubble for a long time. Nobody cares while they think they are making money though.
JonnyNova··on Cryptocurrency bloodbath continues as Bitcoin falls below $10,000
Printed 7 months ago. Steam and Microsoft have stopped accepting bitcoins. I don't know offhand but suspect many of the other ones probably have as well.
