I wonder how much that can get in the way. I'm sure he adds insights into the development team from likely conceptualizing data and architecture vastly different than most people.
JonnyNova··on Google loses ‘right to be forgotten’ case
I think that the Google is stepping into the realm of government because they might feel that government services are lacking in this realm. These records and controls for what remains available would be better served in a government setting than a private corporation one.
JonnyNova··on YouTube is littered with mass-produced videos made by automated bots
A video analysis of the related phenomenon:

"Weird Kids' Videos and Gaming the Algorithm"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKp2gikIkD8

It talks about possibly using machine learning to create many videos targeted at toddlers and using techniques to ensure the next autoplay item doesn't change to another channel.

JonnyNova··on Google loses ‘right to be forgotten’ case
Google is claiming to be acting in the interests of the public without the same mechanisms accessible to the public for moderating how this ability is used. Today Google can cite public interest, but it is just aligned and not acting purely on the public's interest. Like Facebook holding all user data forever, Google will definitely want to hold all data forever because someone it might make shareholders money.
JonnyNova··on Google loses ‘right to be forgotten’ case
Can you elaborate?
JonnyNova··on Ask HN: What up and coming technology has you most excited?
Self driving cars. The amount of time saved for humanity will be absolutely staggering and free up people to spend more time accomplishing more things.
JonnyNova··on The US Army’s costly quest for the perfect radio
I've heard about stories about government agencies and such second hand from family members. To me, it sounds like it breaks down to this because the projects that they are running are not subject to risk of failure. There isn't a small company that is going to absolutely die if a deliverable doesn't meet the market's demands at a certain point in time. Just don't stop throwing money and resources at the project until it is done no matter what.
JonnyNova··on Debt Collection Companies Have Hijacked the Justice System
A bad mark on your credit isn't the end of the story for that debt. You should check out if you can still pay it and get the mark off.
JonnyNova··on Apple confirms it uses Google cloud for some of iCloud
They don't have to relay purely on one solution. It would make sense to host certain parts of their infrastructure on GCP if enough of their customers are also located on GCP.
JonnyNova··on When to bring in the heavy hitters (2017)
Those are really valuable skills too. There is a slant for engineering here since the site is for, by, of engineers. I recently joined a new team and we have a totally kick-ass technical product manager we work with pretty heavily. He is an absolute boon to the team when it comes to interfacing with different parts of management and being able to walk to the talk of the specifics of certain technologies.

For your last point, I'd be cognizant of being able to measure your value objectively somehow. It can be easy to get left behind if the value you provided didn't get tracked because people were only paying attention to lines of code.

JonnyNova··on Genetic contribution to neuroticism associated with affluence, health, longevity
And there definitely is different categories for risk. People probably don't have equal risk tolerance for eating questionable food and gambling.
JonnyNova··on When to bring in the heavy hitters (2017)
Mess with stuff in your free time. Most of the time people won't want to hire you to lead implementation/designing things unless you have experience doing it which can be a pretty nasty catch-22. Having some side projects side steps that and puts you ahead of a lot of your peers.

Also have a clear sense of direction of where you want to be going and what you want to be doing. Without that management and mentors won't know how to push you along and might come to expect you to remain in the same position for longer than you expect to.

JonnyNova··on Llamatron “read me” file
There is another article [1] that speaks very similarly about how niche unique things become popular and ultimately subverted. It (being [1]) speaks about subcultures being completely dead and I disagree with that. They are just transformed in the wake of the internet and the beginnings of social media. I would even say that due to sites like Reddit and Patreon more subcultures exist and are more diverse than before.

JonnyNova··on What I Learned Burning $14k on YouTube Ads for Candy Japan
Agreed. For me, the ad's pacing was too slow and it didn't stoke enough excitement for the candy.
JonnyNova··on Eldar Black Holes
The US government hasn't acknowledge the existence of aliens, but in 2016 the CIA admitted to funding programs because they suspected the existence of aliens. It is very hard to find a good source to link though due to terrible SNR when you google "cia aliens"
JonnyNova··on Federal Circuit Should Not Allow Patents on Inventions That Belong to the Public
It always bugs the hell out of me that many large organizations will file for patents that they have no intent of developing. I worked at a certain large corporation previously and they would have patent brain storming camps encouraging various employees to think of and file for patents on just about any topic regardless of the business's involvement in that field. A large majority of patents that come out of those workshops either stifle innovation in that area completely or are used to later extort someone who wishes to actually bring it to market.
JonnyNova··on You Can't Have Denmark Without Danes
Is we referring to the United States?
JonnyNova··on You Can't Have Denmark Without Danes
It isn't just about skin color, it is about in-group favoritism. Most people tend to seek out similarities to others in groups depending on the context. Could be sex, race, profession, hobbies, interests, etc. There definitely is a scale of how people treat those they have categorized as out-group as well.
JonnyNova··on You Can't Have Denmark Without Danes
One of the downsides is that a larger system collects more money and becomes a much more ripe target for individuals looking to corrupt it.
JonnyNova··on How to sell a $300 chocolate bar
A buddy of mine has a theory that every great product needs a gimmick. It needs something that makes it seem like it stands apart from similar products.

Going to sell a pen? No! Sell a pen that appeals to someone's sense of a adventure, even if it (and the person buying it) will spend its entire life sitting on the desk at the office.

That is the whole no-chew thing - the gimmick.

JonnyNova··on Japanese 'Prince' Switched at Birth Was Raised a Pauper
On what grounds could he get more from the hospital? IANAL and am not familiar with Japanese statutes, but the law almost certainly doesn't guarantee any entitlement to wealth from being born into a wealthy family. He probably has a very good chance of making a claim on the family's estate though.
JonnyNova··on Elm changed my mind about unpopular languages
I would totally be interested in hearing more about this. My email is jonnynova00 at gmail
JonnyNova··on A worm species called Thelazia gulosa was found in the eye of a woman
I doubt it would make any difference for this one and given it was so rare in humans probably zero studies like it give any substantive evidence about it. A healthy immune system is going to help keep cancer and various other parasites at bay though.
JonnyNova··on A worm species called Thelazia gulosa was found in the eye of a woman
This is nightmare fuel for pretty much anyone!

Definitely a good general remainder to eat healthy and exercise to keep the immune system strong.

JonnyNova··on 56 Bills Have Been Introduced in 30 States to Restrict Protests
Not that directly, but the US legal process definitely favors the wealthier because they have access to more resources, namely better lawyers.
JonnyNova··on 56 Bills Have Been Introduced in 30 States to Restrict Protests
The title is overblown. The count of bills introduced has absolutely zero correlation to what effects enacting the bill has. Many of the of the bills in question are addressing things like tampering with electrical equipment and changing the fines for trespassing.

A very large quantity of legislation is passed for all sorts of reasons. Did you know that every single recipient of the Medal of Honor requires legislation passed to award it? One recent example: https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/4641

JonnyNova··on 56 Bills Have Been Introduced in 30 States to Restrict Protests
I can't find the source right now, but drivers have been privileged versus pedestrians since around 1900 when vehicles were given the right of way instead of the pedestrian who had it before. Legislation was also introduced to change committing homicide with a vehicle to be vehicular manslaughter to reduce the severity of the penalty to increase adoption of automobiles.
JonnyNova··on The case for ending Amazon’s dominance
Their monopoly is more abstract: they have a monopoly on convenience. They ensured their product selection covers a wide variety of common objects that most people end up buying and streamlined their checkout process (they had the patent for 1 click checkout for 20 years) to reduce as much friction as possible to ensure that carts would not be abandoned.
JonnyNova··on Fired Google Engineer Loses Diversity Memo Challenge
There are certain legal limitations to that from the NLRA. tptacek goes into that in depth here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16396827
JonnyNova··on Leveraging Bitcoin to Solve Venezuela’s Hyperinflation
I'm always a bit suspicious of articles like this that plug for specifically bitcoin versus cryptocurrencies as a whole. Many cryptos can help to fill the needs of Venezuelan citizens. Are we not talking about them since they won't make the author rich?
