JonathanBuchh··on Show HN: Tracking my local bus with a RaspberryPi
https://rpilocator.com is great for finding Pi's closer to MSRP. You just have to waif for them to be in stock.
JonathanBuchh··on I Posted on YouTube Consistently for 1 Month. This Is What Happened
> When it comes to YouTube monetization you need to have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours over a 12-month period.

JonathanBuchh··on Use plain-text email
I've been using MailMate[1] on MacOS, but I don't know any other email clients that render Markdown.

JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
There is a page titled "Where do I start?" on Brandon Sanderson's website: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/where-do-i-start/
JonathanBuchh··on Tradle
This is like playing https://worldle.teuteuf.fr/ without seeing the country shape (since I do not know much about world trade). I love it – especially because it teaches me something new!
JonathanBuchh··on Cooklang – Managing Recipes in Git
I just wanted to shout out Cooking For Engineers even though it’s only moderately related. Its format for recipes is so quick to read. I would love to see CookLang integrate this style of recipe viewing.

JonathanBuchh··on Write plain text files
I have been using Working Copy[0] for this. It is super full-featured and the developer is super cool for making everything free for students through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

JonathanBuchh··on A List of Hacker News's Undocumented Features and Behaviors
I apologize for submitting a duplicate. I wrongly assumed that I would not be allowed to submit a link if it had not garnered attention within the last year or so (now I know 10 months is not "the last year or so") by an automated system. I did not realize that this was a responsibility of the moderator and I am sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused.
JonathanBuchh··on A List of Hacker News's Undocumented Features and Behaviors
I've been using #F6F60 for a while now, since it makes the top bar the same color as the background. It is only a problem when you are on a page like /newest where the text in the navigation bar at the top of the current page turns white ("new" in this case) to indicate that you are not on the homepage. The lack of contrast makes it almost impossible to read.

JonathanBuchh··on My Notebook System
Does a pen exist in the form factor of a Fisher’s Bullet Space Pen that has gel ink? I want something small to put in my front pocket that I can trust not to ever leak and also have gel pen.

JonathanBuchh··on Resurrecting the old Wordle for procrastinators
It's still there in the JavaScript file.

> Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation.

It appears to be the Zero-Clause BSD, but for some reason, it says Microsoft holds the copyright. Could original author must have used something with the same license to write Wordle? If it isn't a free license and I am misinterpreting the code, I would be happy to take my version down.

JonathanBuchh··on Resurrecting the old Wordle for procrastinators
I made a copy the day The New York Times bought Wordle: https://buchh.fun/wordle

Thanks to Josh for making Wordle with a free license.

JonathanBuchh··on Apple in 2021
I second this. If battery life and fitness features are of the upmost importance, check out a Garmin, Polar, Suunto, or something similar. They can last for many days on a single charge using GPS regularly and the only charging I do is when I'm showering, meaning I can track my sleep. I've had a Garmin 735XT for three years and it's not showing signs of age. It's less of a smartwatch and more of a fitness tracker, since the extent of "smart" features these watches often possess is limited to receiving notifications and possibly playing music, but I don't use these features anyway. I used an Apple Watch in the past, but much prefer a simpler fitness tracker. The only thing I miss is the ability to listen to podcasts using only a watch and Bluetooth earbuds.

JonathanBuchh··on Why might you run your own DNS server?
I also use Pi-hole[1] and unbound[2]. You can even use tailscale[3] as a quick and easy way to use Pi-hole on all other networks through a WireGuard VPN tunnel.

JonathanBuchh··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
It looks like my window to edit my comment is over, but I would have linked to the recipe view if I had know about it. Thanks!
JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: Let's build an HN uBlacklist to improve our Google search results?
I’ve also been using https://kagi.com for the past couple of days and have found the search results to be unparalleled to both Google and DuckDuckGo. I haven’t come across any SEO spam and the results seem to be of better quality overall. They have all of the same bangs DDG uses and get results from Bing, Google, and a bespoke index. Because they query Bing and Google, it will be pretty expensive when it launches (it's in private beta) since it costs $12 per 1000 queries, but since search is so important, it will probably be worth it. They say they're privacy focused too, but it's hard to be sure when a product isn't open source.

Kagi isn't trying to take significant market share from Google or DDG, but find a niche (probably Hacker News type people). The one thing I find they're lacking is maps and location based results (e.g. you can't search for "lunch near me"). If you're interested, I'd recommend checking out their FAQ: https://kagi.com/faq

JonathanBuchh··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
It would be amazing if there was something that would convert recipes to the format used on Cooking For Engineers. It’s so intuitive and easy to read. I never want to look at steps to make a recipe again.

JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2021?
I have really enjoyed listening to CoRecursive with Adam Gordon Bell. The “Apple 2001” episode is a great one to get started with. It features a David Shayer, who worked on a secret project at Apple for a US Government contractor: http://corecursive.com/063-apple-2001

JonathanBuchh··on Launch HN: Parade (YC S20) – Launch your company without hiring a designer
I love how I instantly found fonts I love. It took me less than three minutes. Great product!
JonathanBuchh··on Free public domain audiobooks
You can grab the RSS feed from LibriVox and put it into most podcast apps.

I'm on iOS and really enjoy using Overcast.

JonathanBuchh··on Ichi.city
Sorry for the confusion. To clarify, I did not mean to suggest using GitHub/GitLab pages in combination with Ichi.city. That would be redundant.
JonathanBuchh··on Ichi.city
I wish more people knew how easy it is to set up a simple webpage. There is no need to pay for something like Squarespace. This, along with GitHub/GitLab make for great, free ways for people to learn some basic HTML.
JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: Experience learning English programming syntax as a non-native speaker?
Thanks for the great response! Sorry for the confusion—English is my first language. I have updated the above text to reflect that. I’m just curious about other people’s experiences :)
