I think this is a pretty pragmatic approach to decentralization on the web since it’s achievable now. I like it.
JonathanBuchh··on Happy birthday Vim (2020)
Initially, I used vim emulation within Obsidian, but later realized that I didn’t need to know about backlinks very often—I just wanted a simple wiki, so I started using vimwiki. The main downside for me is that you can’t (to my knowledge) use folders without changing links ([[folder/note]] instead of [[note]] in Obsidian), so all my notes are in one directory with no subdirectories. I also don’t think renaming files in vimwiki updates links in other files like in Obsidian. Because I prioritize using my own vim config over many of the features in Obsidian, I use vimwiki. Whenever I need something that Obsidian can do that vimwiki can’t, I just open Obsidian. I love owning my notes in plaintext :)

I was opposite with Markdown—I started using it with Obsidian, then fell in love with vim. Now I love Markdown even more and use vimwiki instead of Obsidian.

> I solved that with syncthing

syncthing is great!

JonathanBuchh··on Happy birthday Vim (2020)
I’m grateful to Vim because it taught me that I can write plain text. Previously, I was under the assumption that I need to create a Word or Google Doc. I wonder how many others are in the same situation I was in…
JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: How is life without a smartphone?
How does you USB stick work? Is it just a Linux ISO or are you able to boot into a system with custom configuration?
JonathanBuchh··on My life without a smartphone is getting harder and harder
Products like https://www.thelightphone.com/, sound fantastic in theory, but I can't imagine not having a basic web browser or camera. It has basic mapping functionality, but I've heard it doesn't get you places very quickly.
JonathanBuchh··on Why facts don't change our minds
Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion is a great book on this topic.
JonathanBuchh··on Get started making music
This style of music making reminds me of https://www.incredibox.com

I have no idea how they make so many loops that all sounds great together.

JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: The Expected Style for Tech Résumés
I have enjoyed learning LaTeX to create my résumé.

Nope :)

Here’s their pricing page for more info: https://obsidian.md/pricing

JonathanBuchh··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
I’m really grateful to Obsidian for getting me into personal wikis. The devs work super quickly and it’s amazing to see what the two of them have been able to accomplish. I wish there were more Obsidian-like communities out there.

Although I mostly use vimwiki these days, I still use Obsidian for viewing backlinks. Does anyone know how to do this in (n)vim?

JonathanBuchh··on Minitel, the Open Network Before the Internet
How do you use it? I’m not familiar with the VT-100 and its uses.

JonathanBuchh··on Ask HN: What does it take to change your email address?
Changing emails is potentially dangerous, but I have started doing it anyway. I have taken the “slow migration” track. Every time I log in to a site that uses my old email, I update it to the new one (it is too time consuming/tedious to update every login in one go). I also automatically forward my old email address to the new one so I don't miss anything. I respond with the new one in hopes that others will start using it in the future.

If changing emails is a pressing matter, you could set up a vacation response in your old email and tell people where they should reach you in the future. Then, you need to change all login information for everything. It's a good idea to retain access to your old email for as long as possible in case you forget to change a login, need to reset a password, recover an old account, etc. It is also nice to make sure people who don't have your new email can still reach you.

Because switching emails was not urgent for me, I've chosen to slowly migrate. This process would be a lot harder if I had not been using a password manager.
