JonCox··on Ask HN: What's the best lecture series you've seen?
CS193p - Developing Apps for iOS, by Paul Hegarty.

It's a course taught at Stanford University, some of which they've released publicly for free. Here's the latest incarnation, which covers SwiftUI: https://cs193p.sites.stanford.edu

One of the earlier courses, back when it was all MVC + UIKit focussed, was how I learnt iOS dev and got a solid grasp of all the concepts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ipad-and-iphone-applic...

Absolutely fantastic lectures, I feel very lucky they were available. Thank you Paul if you're reading!

JonCox··on Apple’s Use of Swift in iOS 13
Yes.

I’ve made a backend for my app that is essentially a middleware layer to an external API.

It’s entirely written in Swift, using the Vapor web framework, packaged up in a Docker container, and hosted on Google Cloud Run (which is essentially serverless for Docker containers).

https://cloud.google.com/run/

Previously it was running on AWS Elastic Beanstalk, but the devops knowledge to get it running on Beanstalk was significantly more, and realistically beyond my capabilities. Towards the end there was an intermittent SSL issue on Beanstalk I couldn’t figure out how to fix.

Since moving to Cloud Run its been running extremely smoothly and is costing a fraction of the price.

It is in production, but the daily active users are measured in the thousands, not tens of thousands.

JonCox··on The Amazon Is Not the Earth’s Lungs
Not anymore it isn't.
JonCox··on We Need New Ways of Treating Depression
Here's a nifty idea.. start researching cheap, low harm, but powerful drugs again, instead of banning the research.

Perhaps some new ways of treating depression using LSD or suchlike will come from the research. Perhaps not. Hard to know while the science is banned.

JonCox··on Where Pot Entrepreneurs Go When the Banks Say No
To bring it back to the article, it's a bit like how CannaSOS (think a mix of Amazon & Rotten Tomatoes for weed) are stepping up and developing a crypto token & platform specifically for the purpose of buying/selling marijuana.
JonCox··on Google for India: Building India-first products and features
Go is clearly a go to product name for Google.
JonCox··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
I think new comments do get a slight boost initially. But I also think people are venting their frustrations at the very noticeable decline in software quality from Apple over the last 3 years.
JonCox··on Apple at Its Best
Did it come as a surprise to you that Apple were aggressively (but technically legally) minimising their tax bill?
JonCox··on CockroachDB 1.1 Released: Production Made Easy
Eww
JonCox··on How to Recognize Burnout Before You’re Burned Out
I find I'm doing all sorts of work outside my day job, working on various little projects etc.

In the past I've stopped doing any of that, and just focused on exercising, socialising and watching TV outside of work. You'll be amazed at how much time you have to fill, and how much sleep you can catch up on.

But then the only times I've approached burnout it's been because of all these side projects!

JonCox··on How to Recognize Burnout Before You’re Burned Out
I like the overall direction of your comment, essentially make yourself your priority for a bit, but I don't think starting a startup is a good solution for burnout :P
JonCox··on The Old Are Eating the Young
Nom nom nom
JonCox··on Swift is like Kotlin
It's bad, but the name could be worse: https://www.cockroachlabs.com
JonCox··on Alphabet Loses $859M on 'Moonshots' in 2Q 2016
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
JonCox··on Apps made for one OS shouldn't insist on aping the design elements of another
To be fair, iTunes on Mac is also a buggy, confusing, slow and generally terrible application.
JonCox··on Apple March 2016 Keynote – 10am PDT
That's exactly what I was going to do. Only reason I even had the keynote on tbh.

Am changing jobs and will be using my own laptop from now on, but guess I'll have to dust off eek a bit of life out of my aging MacBook Air - as I resent spending that much money on a laptop with year old hardware.

On the plus side Apple did just save me from spending £2,000 ;)

JonCox··on Apple March 2016 Keynote – 10am PDT
No updated MacBook Pro? That's annoying.

I was rather hoping for a small refresh to include the new Skylake processors, it's certainly due one: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Mac

JonCox··on Apple’s declining software quality
+1

Anecdotally I've noticed a significant degradation of quality over the last year or so, everything from updating a new iOS device from on iCloud backup, general iOS bugs, OS X wifi connectivity issues etc etc. It's been noticeable.

JonCox··on CIA declassifies hundreds of UFO documents
Microsoft are at it too with Windows 10. Sneaky beaky ;)
JonCox··on Ask HN: How can I stop forgetting “things”?
Is that the therapist equivalent of 'Have you tried turning it off an on again?' ;)
JonCox··on When will we stop using Facebook?
Or even just https://www.messenger.com
JonCox··on Ask HN: Any good Swift training courses in London?
Thanks Charley, have just booked that course :)
JonCox··on Ask HN: Any good Swift training courses in London?
Thanks for letting me know Peroni :) I actually come across Amsys ones in my Googling, can be difficult to know if they're legit or not though.
JonCox··on Scaling Secret: Real-Time Chat
I'm making a real-time communication iOS app, we're using Firebase[1] to quickly build it's real-time features.

There's to be a lot of hate on here towards using such services. Is it really a better option (flexibility, owning your data & price wise) to spend the time building your own system and having to hire engineers later on to manage/develop it?

JonCox··on Removing EU roaming charges is a big deal (2014)
Top tip if you do a lot of 'roaming' (and are UK based), join the Three network: http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Phones/Feel_At_Home

I've not quite figured out why more networks don't have deals like this in place, as a customer it can take like 1 holiday to wipe out price differences between network base prices.

JonCox··on Ask HN: Who's your role model?
Richard Branson.
JonCox··on How the CIA Might Target Apple's XCode
Encrypting that entire process doesn't strike me as excessive, I kinda assumed that was already how it's done anyway.
JonCox··on U.S. Spies on Millions of Cars
Clearly not everyone holds the same beliefs. On this occasion it's me and at least one other person https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8952794
JonCox··on U.S. Spies on Millions of Cars
Oops yes, forgot to preface that the police should need a warrant first - I'm not so sure with the security services, probably they should but from a secret, faster process - with more lenient requirements than the police.

Overall though I agree with basically everything you say. I'm just tilted a little more towards longer retention and more information than you I guess.

I concede it is possible that I jumped in here and made blanket statements that aren't 100% realistic. The general sentiment does reflect my opinion though.

Thankfully this is why we have democracy, so a more tempered approach most people agree with can be used :)

By the way your comments come across as more balanced and reasoned than I lot I read expressing basically the same viewpoint.
