JohannesH··on Towards trust in Emacs
At my work when our IT sec org tighten the screws harder and harder, people just have to get "creative" to do their job effectively. For us this meant that some of my coworkers started using their own machines to write code making the whole setup much more unsafe and prone to breaches.

But I definitely feel there's a huge missing part in our setup and lack of accountability in the It sec org when it comes to not hurting productivity unnecessarily. They can just keep putting up barriers without any real consideration to the impact and side effects they may have.

JohannesH··on The paper passport's days are numbered
I Denmark we can have digital drivers licenses, id cards, public transportation passes, online authentication etc.All of them have physical counteeparts. I dont think there are any plans to outphase any of the physical counteeparts for various good reasons such as people not having phones, accessibility, compatibility and so on.

I imagine that the issues for making, deploying and integrating a digital-only passport on a global scale would be much harder.

JohannesH··on Empathy for the user having sex with your software
Hilarious! That's a fantastic name and an and an awesome side effect.

Timing is everything... and luck. :)

Me and a colleague of mine once posted essentially the same video of us pushing a coke can across a table, making the sound vaguely similar to Chewbacca.

His video got maybe 100-200 views, and mine got 1.7 million views on YouTube and somewhere between 50 and 100 million views across other platforms. The reason? I happened to post my video to reddit a few hours later, which happened to coincide better with people getting ready for Thanksgiving in the states. I'm from Denmark, so it didn't really cross my mind.

I was thinking the same ø, but does it work with the neutral field and changing players in the mix?
JohannesH··on Yes, you can play Duck Hunt without a television (but I can't)
A bit harsh. I didn't know this. I mean, it could be that some people were not able to read english. I was too young to read english and it wasnt my native tongue. Also, my dad used to let us rent a NES and some games at our local video rental shop, so it just didn't come with a manual to read in the first place.
JohannesH··on Life After Ozempic
Anecdote incoming.

During my young adulthood I always gained weight, slowly but steadily until it evened out at around 103 kg.

Around when I was in my early 30s, I got sick to the point I lost 15 kg weight in two weeks, and over the next 3 years I lost 8 kg more, and got down to a low of about 78 kg, mostly due to healthy eating and exercise. I started running half marathons, I became more social and happy and life was generally better.

I'm positive that my sickness altered some chemistry in my body/brain. I didn't have any cravings, my sense of smell was altered and smelling food from McDonalds seemed repulsive to me, I was less impulsive and so on. Life was just easier, for about 3-4 years.

As my sickness receded I slowly got back into my old habits. McDonalds started to become attractive again, snacks slowly creeped back into my daily routine and running became more and more difficult. This recession took about 6-8 years and I'm now back at around 103 kg.

I often look back and wish I could recreate the effects of that period somehow. I've tried "putting down the fork" countless times. I've tried all kinds of weight loss strategies but it just seems so much harder than it was back then.

The sickness I got was Sarcoidosis. Initially I was treated with adrenocortical hormones because I had unexplained high fewers, swollen knees and ancles and rapid weight loss. What eventually led to my diagnosis was a doctor "randomly" asking for a chest x-ray even though I was mostly hurting in my legs. That xray showed I had enlarged granulomas all over my lungs. The hormone treatment lasted for roughly 2 months. But I was going for scans and lung checkups for 3 years after my diagnosis, until everything settled down. My sarcoidosis was fairly mild and I don't have any lasting symptoms.

Personally I'm convinced something happened in my body that made everything easier while I was "sick". I'm not sure if it was the rapid weight loss in the start, the adrenocortical hormone treatment or some other hormonal change caused by the Sarcoidosis itself that caused it. I just know that to me it felt like I was living the life of a thin person on the "other side" for a few years until I was back to my normal self again.

JohannesH··on JWST Captures Image of Supernova That 'Absolutely Shattered' a Star
Should have read the description.

> There are also several light echoes visible in this image, most notably in the bottom right corner. This is where light from the star’s long-ago explosion has reached, and is warming distant dust, which is glowing as it cools down.

JohannesH··on 23andMe changed its terms of service to prevent hacked customers from suing
By that logic no privately owned company would ever be held accountable for anything they did wrong.
JohannesH··on 23andMe changed its terms of service to prevent hacked customers from suing
I don't know if this is the case or not, but surely this should not hinder legal action on anything that happened before the TOS changed right?
JohannesH··on JWST Captures Image of Supernova That 'Absolutely Shattered' a Star
Wow it is absolutely fascinating and awe-inspiring. Anybody know what the blob (looks like wavy gold foil) in the bottom right of the picture is?
JohannesH··on .NET Blazor
I'm still weary of using Blazor in anything serious/long term. I've been burnt before by MS, leaving me with a tech that's both hard to continue using and hard to get rid of if need be.

JohannesH··on Hetzner launches three new dedicated servers
Short answer it depends on your needs and you comfort level with server management. But generally I would say a server running something like Jenkins or similar is not that taxing on the maintenance budget. It does have some up-front cost in getting everything configured and running as you like but after that it is fairly easy to maintain. I usually automate the provisioning as much as possible both for the self-documenting aspect but also to make it easier to repave the system or spin up additional nodes as needed.
JohannesH··on Reducing technical debt by valuing comments as much as code
Comments can lie, but so can code...

  function Add(int a, int b) { return a - b; }
Code can lie in so, so many ways that are much more obscure and confusing than this simple example.
JohannesH··on But life had other plans
Life, while being fragile and vulnerable, can also be extremely resilient.

My cousin and his girlfriend became pregnant a few years ago but the fetus were stuck outside the uterus, so the decision was made to have an abortion followed by a surgical cleansing (a scrape) to make sure nothing was left. The procedure was successful.

After the failed pregnancy my cousin's girlfriend started getting her period again but it was not as regular as it used to be. The doctors attributed it to the recent pregnancy/abortion which could cause irregularities in her hormonal balance etc.

So a while after all this happened, the girlfriend one night had what she believed to be gallstone pain in her stomach. She were familiar with gallstone attacks so that was the most logical explanation. Yet, she was sent to the hospital to have a checkup just to be safe.

You might have guessed it. The nurse at the hospital quickly figured out the cause of pain... She was pregnant and very much in labor. Of course this was 9 months after the abortion so it seemed impossible to her.

So apparently the abortion wasn't successful after all, as they overlooked a second fetus inside the uterus and also missed it while scarping the uterus lining.

So the girlfriend had to call up my cousin at work and tell him he was about to be a dad and that he had to come to hospital immediately. 4 hours later their daughter was born.

JohannesH··on Last Windows 11 update changed all default browser settings to Edge
Are there any good options for me to switch to linux, if I'm forced to work on a windows project in visual studio 2022. I guess I can run a Windows VM but I fear performance degradation. Also I guess I could switch my IDE to Rider, but compiling to .NET Framework 4.8 would be impossible on linux I Guess (again It would be fine in a windows VM).

JohannesH··on Negative interest: Danske Bank changes threshold for personal customers
It's a 100.000 DKK limit. A Lot of people will be affected (not by much though). My girlfriend will have to pay about 300 DKK a year for having somewhere between 100k-200k in her account. I got my money in investments so I pay more than her in various fees, though I usually also make more while the market is climbing.

JohannesH··on Azure has an edge over AWS at big companies, Goldman Sachs survey says
As someone who worked in the very same municipality... one word; bureaucracy.

More specific reasons were. Legal boundaries between ownership and taxpayer money separation. Of cause GDPR is also a big obstacle in joining forces on this scale.

I worked on a project which tried to make a joined venture between several municipalities. I'm not sure if that partnership has ended yet, but overall you could only progress if there were people on both sides collaborating with a "better ask forgiveness, than permission" mindset. As soon as the municipality lawyers or their security officers got involved, all progress stopped immediately.

JohannesH··on The multi-armed bandit problem (2012)
Very interesting. It seems to me that doing incremental work like this might end up in a local minima/maxima. Do you have any advice on how to avoid pitfalls like that? Are you testing radically different ideas along with your incremental improvements?

JohannesH··on AWS gives open source the middle finger?
While I agree with what you said it is important to note that the OSI isn't the defining authority on what is to be considered open source.

You could make an intentionally vague reply saying; "Thanks! Here is the updated contract with my signature back.". Making the other party think you just updated the contract by adding your signature.
