JoelTheSuperior··on Adobe Lightroom v6 is Falling Apart
Indeed but equally this is something I dislike about Macs - on Windows this software would still work just fine.
JoelTheSuperior··on The real prices of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
Motorola literally sells an Android phone for £200 with 5G. I just don't buy it.
JoelTheSuperior··on The real prices of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
To be fair I've maintained for a while now that the reason Apple uses lightning on the phones is because it's quite frankly much more durable than USB-C.
JoelTheSuperior··on Why do so many people want us back in the office?
I think it depends on what your living situation is like as well.

Because I live reasonably far out into the suburbs, my home office is a completely separate room, so it's fairly easy to just totally forget it exists when I stop work.

JoelTheSuperior··on Apple expands independent repair program to Mac after US antitrust investigation
Indeed and it's this utter nonsense that made me finally give in and switch to Windows. Turns out it's nicer than I thought.
JoelTheSuperior··on Microsoft removes manual deferrals from Windows Update 'to prevent confusion'
Indeed. I'm honestly surprised to read of such poor experiences here because I've honestly found that Windows 10 has given me a lot less grief than macOS has recently.
JoelTheSuperior··on Apple Plans to Announce Move to Its Own Mac Chips at WWDC
Indeed - I was a pretty heavy Mac user for years but I genuinely find that Windows gives me less grief lately.
JoelTheSuperior··on Thoughts on cameras in the age of excellent cell phone photos
To be fair I have a DSLR that quite clearly takes much, much better photos than my iPhone Xs Max takes (despite what Apple's marketing would have you believe), but in reality I just don't bother with the DSLR anymore, because whilst the iPhone clearly isn't as good, it's still easily good enough, and it's a hell of a lot more portable.

I imagine many others feel the same way.

JoelTheSuperior··on New iPad Pro with LiDAR Scanner and trackpad support
To be honest it never really bothered me once I realised that a lot of iPad apps let me rebind the caps lock key to work as escape. I'd just love for them to make that option available globally like it is on the Mac.
JoelTheSuperior··on Shopify is giving its employees $1k to furnish their work-from-home setups
I'm using browns with O rings at work. Feel great and are no louder than anyone else's keyboard.
JoelTheSuperior··on Ant Design 4.0
Why not Semantic-ui-react? Surprised it isn't getting more of a mention here, using it at my company and it's been fantastic.
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
This is a big part of it for me. I love Logic Pro / Cubase / Ableton, and having access to those is pretty important.

Admittedly part of the reason I prefer macOS to Windows is that I find pro audio software tends to get more love on macOS.

JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
I totally get that. In all honesty, in a rational world a MacBook is more than enough performance for me (and it's actually what I use at work), but there's still very much an enthusiast alive in me that loves my over the top desktop.
JoelTheSuperior··on Microsoft urged: Open-source Windows 7 to 'undo past wrongs'
A few years ago I was considering open sourcing a small app I had developed a few years ago. Turns out it'd actually require a lot of work to remove dependencies on other libraries I'd used.
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
You still need a real serial but you can generate one pretty easily. Just need to check on Apple's website if it validates.

I have my PC with an AMD Ryzen 3900X running with macOS with working iMessage / App Store etc.

JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
My understanding is it's actually a limitation of the Intel C++ compiler they use but I can't confirm this. On Windows it bakes in some conditionals to check if the CPU is GenuineIntel before doing some things, on macOS it doesn't bother.
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
Do you not ever miss the added power of your hackintosh though? I have a 2017 MBP and it's a great machine but I still love having my big ridiculously powerful desktop with three monitors for when I want that.
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
What made you stop using one?
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
In short, some software (Adobe included) makes use of features that are available on Intel processors but not on AMD. Whilst both AMD and Intel are x86-64 they do both have their own unique features. For example, on Intel you've got fast memset, which doesn't exist on AMD.
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
I'm running a hackintosh with a Ryzen 9 3900X. The OS itself runs great. The only thing to be aware of is whether your software will play nicely with a non-Intel CPU. Adobe software requires patching for example, and VMware / Parallels explicitly require VT-x and won't work with SVM.
JoelTheSuperior··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
Thing is, I'm not a Mac or iOS developer either, but I find that even if alternatives exist, they're rarely as polished as what's available for macOS.

Consider Paste - Ditto exists for Windows, but it's just not as nice in my honest opinion. Or BetterTouchTool, I'm not aware of a Windows alternative.

JoelTheSuperior··on AMD’s 64-Core Threadripper 3990X, only $3990 Coming February 7th
Indeed though keep in mind that the current method for running macOS on AMD doesn't use this and instead relies on patching through Clover. The downside being that whilst the OS itself may run any applications that use an opcode that isn't implemented will simply crash.
JoelTheSuperior··on Estonia has a new way to stop speeding motorists
To be fair the UK absolutely does have average speed checks on many of its motorways.
JoelTheSuperior··on A new abnormal: It is still 2 minutes to midnight
To be fair I don't think it's just a propaganda tool - I think in the case of the terrorism threat levels at least they're ultimately used for justifying higher levels of funding.

Compare it to working in an office - it's almost in your interests to convince others that you're very busy to avoid having more workload.

JoelTheSuperior··on Facebook Dating
I'm 25. I use Facebook. I've noticed many of the people younger than me don't use it at all and many of the people around my age do have accounts but rarely actually use it.
JoelTheSuperior··on Ask HN: Is it okay to resign in six months?
I'm not in a senior role. I do enjoy my job but I'm basically a sole Rails dev - I develop an app that the company offers to clients, which I suspect plays into the long notice period - I suspect they'd have a fair amount of difficulty replacing me.

But yes I suspect that's part of why they have such a long notice period - when I've spoken to recruiters / hiring managers elsewhere they're interested right until the point where they discover I have a three month notice period.

JoelTheSuperior··on Ask HN: Is it okay to resign in six months?
I work in the U.K., as a not very well paid Rails dev haha.
JoelTheSuperior··on Ask HN: Is it okay to resign in six months?
I’m from the U.K.
JoelTheSuperior··on Ask HN: Is it okay to resign in six months?
Two weeks notice? I wish. My current employer requires three months.
JoelTheSuperior··on How the Apple Store Lost Its Luster
Yup, noticed the same in the UK. I can't help but feel like the prices are intentionally kept high to pressure people to replace rather than repair.
