JoeCoo7··on Why do antibiotics exist?
Bacteria are microorganisms, meaning that they are life forms. The word ‘antibiotic’ breaks down into: ‘anti’ (against) and ‘biotic’ (life). Antibiotics act to inhibit the growth of, or kill, microorganisms, preventing their spread and multiplication. The first – and still most common – antibiotics come from fungi (e.g., penicillin) and specifically fight bacteria. Before the development of antibiotics for widespread use, about 70 years ago, there was a high mortality rate from bacterial infections, such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, and sexually transmitted contagions.

Today, many forms of antibiotics exist to treat several different types of infections, including parasitic infections and some fungal infections. However, antibiotics do not work on viruses because viruses are not living organisms and so are ‘not alive’. Unlike living organisms with their own cells, viruses are segments of DNA (or RNA) that inject themselves into living cells, forcing those cells to do the work of reproducing more of the viral DNA.

This is why your physician will not prescribe an antibiotic for the common cold or flu. When we are sick, we often don’t know the full nature of the infection that is attacking our bodies. We just feel bad. This can be confusing because, for example, while a cold virus attacks our body, our immune system is working extra hard and we become vulnerable to developing other types of infections, such as pneumonia or strep throat, which are bacterial infections and usually treated with antibiotics.

JoeCoo7··on Web3 – Solving Trust Issues Using Math
I've been sharing this piece with friends to get them to 'get' web3. Good to see it getting HN love.
JoeCoo7··on WhatsApp scaled to 1B users with only 50 engineers
WhatsApp has to be one of those most easily scalable projects to work on. You have the freedom to divide chatrooms across different databases/shards. Same goes for notifications, where users can be divided since they're all isolated. The hardest part is just coordinating all the moving pieces in a way that can grow well, and that mostly just involves avoiding pitfalls in your design that might bottleneck.
JoeCoo7··on France issues moratorium on prion research after fatal brain disease strikes
Not sure why she wasn't wearing the proper protection or responded to the exposure correctly (bleach rinse apparently) but this goes to show the importance of following lab safety protocols at all times.
JoeCoo7··on Hyperactive – Easy Neural Architecture Search for Deep Learning in Python
Interesting approach to nas. Can this package do optimization with the hyperband algorithm?
JoeCoo7··on The making of Dark Castle (2018)
An engaging journey into the heart of darkness...
JoeCoo7··on Anti-diarrhoea drug drives cancer cells to cell death
It sounds promising.

The research group led by Dr Sjoerd van Wijk from the Institute of Experimental Cancer Research in Paediatrics at Goethe University already two years ago found evidence indicating that the anti-diarrhoea drug loperamide could be used to induce cell death in glioblastoma cell lines. They have now deciphered its mechanism of action and, in doing so, are opening new avenues for the development of novel treatment strategies.

JoeCoo7··on Show HN: Hire top vetted developers from Latin Ams and Europe for 35/ USD hour
We've been running the platform in beta trying various pricing points that's fair for the developers and affordable for startups & businesses and we've finally settled on this price point. All our developers go through a vigorous vetting process. Although we claim our talent to be at top 5%, they are virtually at the same level as Toptal's. Top 5% is less misleading than Toptal's top 3%.

Also we believe, based on our previous experience, huge timezone differences can be a hurdle for remote work. So we aim to assign developers from similar timezones. Our US based clients will be assigned with Latin Am developers, where as our European clients will be assigned with European developers.

JoeCoo7··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
Pfizer and BioNTech say they will have enough safety data by the third week of November to take their vaccine to regulators. Until then it is not possible for countries to begin their vaccination campaigns.

Can't wait to see what happens next.

JoeCoo7··on Inside the Coronavirus
I'm truly amazed. I enjoyed reading it. My understanding of this virus has increased, but unfortunately it doesn't necessary makes me feel better.
JoeCoo7··on Show HN: TaskDone – Execute and get stuff done
How much weekly talking time in the Execute package, on average? If it's not too early to talk about averages...
JoeCoo7··on Show HN: TaskDone – Execute and get stuff done
Magic happens when you know someone is looking over your shoulder. I have used accountability with a buddy before, and it works. It might not work for everyone though; some consider it too stressful.
JoeCoo7··on 773M Password ‘Megabreach’ Is Years Old
How can the authorities blacklist a Bitcoin wallet address? Couldn't he just tumble the coins and spread them far and wide?
JoeCoo7··on 773M Password ‘Megabreach’ Is Years Old
My new years resolution is to change my passwords every year and not reuse any.

Along with the traditional diet and exercise spiel that lasts a month, only 12 days left on most of my new years resolutions!

JoeCoo7··on Zynga Analytics at its Peak
I think Empires and Allies is making a lot of money currently. It is in the top grossing charts for quite a while. The game is quite good and targets a mid-core audience. https://zynga.com/games/empires-and-allies
JoeCoo7··on Why Germany Is Better at Training Its Workers
Social security has nothing to do with minijobs, its mandatory and it does not depend on your job if minijob or not. Germany has by far the strongest economy in Europe and most other European countries would have problems without Germany. Germany does not depend on the Euro, it would be even stronger without it. So please get yourself informed before telling us your wisdom.
JoeCoo7··on German government rejects asylum request from Snowden
I feel ashamed of my government. They had the chance to stood up for civil rights, show that they are still a democracy. But obviously Germany is not sovereign country anymore, probably has never been since end of WWII.
JoeCoo7··on Snowden appeals to 15 countries for political asylum
He has NOT asked Russia for asylum. http://rt.com/news/edward-service-immigration-russian-493/
JoeCoo7··on German Federal Prosecutor's office gets involved in the NSA data scandal
Its nice that at least something happens, but the German Supreme Prosecution Service is not independent from the government as the supreme court is. So if the German government is involved somehow its only eyewash for the crowd and nothing will happen.

At least more media coverage, that is good for mobilizing more people to protest against it.

JoeCoo7··on Germany Minister of Justice demands immediate response to US spying on Germany
Are you serious? This is not wiretapping a single individual or group. They are spying on ALL people in Germany and violate the German constitution, and if the gov of Germany is involved (which is probably the case) this gets even worse.

I wonder about all those people which think its normal/not surprising. I bet you had not the slightest idea about the scale of NSA spying. NSA even compromised EU offices and there is probably more to come. This reminds me of Cold War and allies should not be treated like that.

By the way the German federal prosecution office has now stated its collecting data about the NSA spying (http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/bundesanwaltschaft...). NSA spying gets lots of media coverage now, this might also turn the tides in the upcoming election. Good luck pirate party!
