JimmyAustin··on The dangers of AVX-512 throttling: a 3% impact
From my (admittedly little) understanding, part of the concern was that a user on part of the CPU could degrade performance for other users by sucking up proportionally more of the heat budget of the entire CPU, triggering throttling. Is this what was tested here?
JimmyAustin··on It’s Amazon’s Swamp Now
Less.
JimmyAustin··on Tesla is building its own AI chips for self-driving cars
Off-line processing is absolutely in fashion with SDCs. Can't quickly react to a pedestrian jumping in front of your car when you have to bounce 12 1080p video streams to a AWS server.
JimmyAustin··on Google warns Android might not remain free because of EU decision
There isn't a platform on earth where developers don't have to worry about their app working on all devices.
JimmyAustin··on Disney's movie dominance has a dark side, independent theatre warns
Do you have any insights in to why the Korean film industry is so vibrant? The local films in Australia are pretty sorry, and I'm curious about the local/political decisions that have gone into making it so good. Including K-Pop, South Korea seems to hit above its weight culturally.
JimmyAustin··on Amazon EC2 Instance Update – Faster Processors and More Memory
"Sustained all-code Turbo Boost" sounds like a euphemism for "We want to say overclocked but Intel won't let us".
JimmyAustin··on The rise of 'pseudo-AI': how tech firms quietly use humans to do bots' work
It depends on the task, but if you can get them to do multiple tasks in one, you can ask them to do a task you already know the answer to. If they get the known answer wrong, instant reject.
JimmyAustin··on Average annual hours worked per country
As with most surveys, the average isn't very insightful, and you need to dive further in to the distribution to learn anything. I imagine Japan has a bimodal distribution split between on and off the salarymen track.
JimmyAustin··on PEP 572: Python assignment expressions has been accepted
Python 3 had massive breaking changes, especially in the way it handles the string <-> byte conversion at the edge of the application. It's very easy to write a Python 2 application that works on ASCII and fails as soon as someone inserts umlauts, and very hard for Python 3.
JimmyAustin··on Netflix Is Why AT&T bought Time Warner, and Comcast and Disney want Fox
The on-demand nexus already works on Apple TV. Say "I want to watch Billions" into the remote and it shows you all the services you can watch it on, then tap through to actually watching it.

Now if only it existed on other platforms.

JimmyAustin··on How ARKit 2 works, and why Apple is so focused on AR
Interestingly, it was against the TOS to build the AR Linkedin/Facebook app using the Google Glass API.
JimmyAustin··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
Tesla does test the shit out of it before they release a patch. The problem is that users expectations of the systems performance suddenly get out of sync with what the car is going to do.

Part of me wonders if there should be a very quick, unskipable, animated, easy to understand explanation of the patch notes before you can drive when they make material changes to core driving functionality.

JimmyAustin··on Footsteps, Pressure Sensors, and AI: The Next Step in Airport Security
OHD has 41k badged staff. Enough staff to triage 2 situations a minute constantly would barely make a blip.
JimmyAustin··on Footsteps, Pressure Sensors, and AI: The Next Step in Airport Security
A roller carry on bag with jammed wheels would qualify.
JimmyAustin··on Ask HN: Which distributed database solutions would you suggest?
You'd be surprised how far you can push the problem into the future. OVH will sell you a server with 512GB of RAM for under a K a month. You can easily go into the terabytes.
JimmyAustin··on David Marcus Leaves Messenger to Focus on Blockchain Within Facebook
It's encouraging dog fooding. If you are forced to use the product, you'll learn its strengths and weaknesses.

JimmyAustin··on Facebook Q1 2018 Earnings Slides [pdf]
Presumably Facebook employees would work else where if they weren't paid.
JimmyAustin··on Apple’s 2019 Mac Pro will be shaped by workflows
Honestly they should consider bringing back the clone program. HP/Dell can sell me a workstation that runs OSX, that they update on their schedule, and I'll be happy. I don't want it pretty, I just want it functional.
JimmyAustin··on Facebook CEO says no plans to extend all of GDPR globally
It's 4% of worldwide revenue.
JimmyAustin··on Why “blockchain” is BS in 4 slides
You can treat the 'approved' services list using a whitelist, like a CA.

The other issue is that none of this is necessary. If I want to prove to Person X that Gov Y says that I have property Z, why can't I just present a cryptographically signed certificate saying I have property X. You could even have a similar revocation list as CA.

JimmyAustin··on UberRUSH is shutting down
This seems like a service where the unit economics might not work at the moment, but will become much more attractive once self driving cars are on the market.
JimmyAustin··on Video suggests huge problems with Uber’s driverless car program
In the short term, yes, but the moment someone else gets a self driving car they’ll be destroyed.
JimmyAustin··on Facebook Is Not the Internet's Only Privacy Villain
I don't think he is arguing for more or less outrage, he just wants it directed better. I'd argue that picking out one offender and focusing on them is in some ways worse then focusing on the entire issue.

Facebook being slapped with a massive fine/being broken up might not do a lot to stop the general trading and exchange of users data online, but its enough to get the politicians to say "job done" and move onto the next issue. We need to focus on fixing the issues that allowed the FB/CA scandal to occur, instead of just focusing on the symptom.

JimmyAustin··on Sources: Google is buying Lytro for about $40M
Just spit-balling, but could it be used for cheap depth perception, like a LIDAR alternative?
JimmyAustin··on Facebook Sued by Investors Over Voter-Profile Harvesting
The provision that allows this is ~460 words into the TOS, and is written in pretty easy to understand english. At some point you need to hold yourself accountable for agreeing to this stuff.
JimmyAustin··on Facebook Sued by Investors Over Voter-Profile Harvesting

JimmyAustin··on Startups that launched today at Y Combinator’s W18 Demo Day
Looking at the policy doc (https://www.safetywing.com/documents/safety-wing-specimen-po...), it looks like scuba diving is covered as long as you are PADI or NAUI certified and not cave diving.
JimmyAustin··on Waymo shows off what it’s like to ride in a truly driverless self-driving car
The issue is that Musk committed to the "LIDAR is unnecessary" path when he told users that the 6 figure cars he was selling had the necessary hardware to support L5 automation. There is going to be blowback if he suddenly says "Whoops, you gotta buy another or drop 20k on upgrades if you want SDC capability".
JimmyAustin··on The 600+ Companies PayPal Shares Your Data With
If Paypal pays service provider Y to validate a credit card hasn't recently been used in fraud, they would be sharing the data, but they certainly wouldn't be selling the data.
