JimWestergren··on Botspam apocalypse
I am running a website builder with > 20K sites. I use open contact forms without captcha. What worked for me is to use a one line javascript that places current timestamp in a hidden input field that is default 0. Then I check on the backend and if the value is either 0 or time to fill out and send the form is less than 4 seconds I block as spam. This blocks more than 99% of spam and also takes care of most human copy paste spam as well.
JimWestergren··on Hijacking Email with Cloudflare Email Routing
Albert, you seem to work a lot with or for CloudFlare in regards to security.

Would you trust CloudFlare handling your important email forwards going forward? I recently switched to them for my forwards a few weeks ago, I would feel better if your answer is a yes .... :)

JimWestergren··on Hijacking Email with Cloudflare Email Routing
A smaller man-in-the-middle would be more secure? I mean if email forward is really necessary (in my case yes) and successful delivery of email is really important (so I don't want to use my own VPS and the headache it brings) are there any better options for me than CloudFlare? My domains already use CloudFlare for their CDN etc.

Thank you so much for this link. It was a very interesting read.

I especially liked his guidelines and best practices for passwords usage and a kind of early form of 2FA.

JimWestergren··on DuckDuckGo faces controversy over tracking agreement with Microsoft
Even if this is just affecting the browser and only on a few domains the brand damage here for DDG is huge.

It took DuckDuckGo years to built up their positive privacy reputation and it can all fall apart in a few days.

JimWestergren··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
Call me old fashioned but for me Magic is something you play holding physical cards in your hand.

If I look at modern cards they don't feel like the same game. Digitally generated art, strange creatures "Social Climber"? and most of the cards has long complicated texts and many using complicated mechanics.

Compare those new cards to old classic cards like Black Knight: https://scryfall.com/card/leb/95/black-knight

Maybe it is nostalgia, I don't know. But for me the essence and spirit of Magic as a game is with the 93/94 cards.

JimWestergren··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
Yes, basic lands.
JimWestergren··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
In "Magic the Gathering Old School 7 Points Singleton" you play the card game Magic the Gathering but only with cards printed in the first 2 years (93/94) and only maximum 1 copy of each in your deck. And power cards are limited to 7 points according to a table found here https://ligaoldschoolmadrid.wordpress.com/2021/03/25/7-point...

A wonderful nostalgic way to play the game.

JimWestergren··on Show HN: Galga – I made a digital card game
I tried to find a tutorial or rules page but could not find it. Tried the game but did not understand so much of it. I also made a card game, details in my profile.

Anyway, good luck with it!

JimWestergren··on Swedbank customers positive balance turned into negative due to an update
Most popular bank in Sweden. Keep in mind that you don't use cash in Sweden.

Thanks a lot for the tip. I am going to add this to domainstats.com
JimWestergren··on Tell HN: A $40B company killed my 2yo son. Now they force me to keep silent
You are seriously going to recommend this without knowing this person more than what he wrote? A legal battle can be a torture for many many years and without any guarantee of anything. Huge companies has an army of lawyers that will use any legal loophole they can find.

He should speak to a lawyer, his family and probably a therapist.

JimWestergren··on Tell HN: A $40B company killed my 2yo son. Now they force me to keep silent
So sorry for your loss. If you choose to settle (nobody would blame you) perhaps some of the money could go to improve the security of your neighborhood (fence/signs etc).

Speak to a lawyer. Speak to a therapist.

Good luck and a virtual hug from me.

JimWestergren··on Rules of Card Games: I Doubt It (1998)
Bluff is a good party game, I have played it many times with many different guests. If playing with many people use 2 decks instead of 1 and only the people sitting close to the current player can Challenge - otherwise there is always somebody that wants to challenge and the game does not progress.

Trick to winning (mostly) is to first bluff by playing your singles and then playing your real ones at the end of the round and try to make people think you bluff.

I agree that John McLeod deserves an award for his work.

JimWestergren··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
I built the website builder N.nu myself in 2009. Still popular in Sweden today, 13 years later.

JimWestergren··on What I learned during my three days offline
Off topic but interesting: Before today (I am 40 yo) I did not know anything about jungle cats - I did not know any such thing existed. This morning I did some research about them to send a google image for my painter to paint for my upcoming board game. Later today I see the words "jungle cats" mentioned in a totally unrelated tech article - what are the odds? Confirmation bias I know, but interesting.
JimWestergren··on Confessions of a Bitcoin Widow
Yes: "Ernst and Young had managed to identify six Quadriga cold wallets so far but had found almost nothing inside any of them."

But could it be possible that there exist other unknown cold wallets with a lot of value with lost passwords?

JimWestergren··on Confessions of a Bitcoin Widow
It was not clear in the article. Is there cold wallets that belonged to Quadriga with a lot of value with lost passwords?

JimWestergren··on How to know if you’re addicted
Yes, ok. But such an article with such a title should at least mention them I think. Otherwise some people keep thinking it is normal spending hours daily on social media, or checking their phone 50 times a day. We should speak up and say that it is NOT normal.
JimWestergren··on How to know if you’re addicted
Why such a focus of substances and no mention of the more common addictions such as video games, porn and social media?
