JimWestergren··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
Ryanair ... just recently I went with my 3 kids with them. I did a mistake in paying an adult ticket for my oldest son instead of teenager ticket. This small mistake made it impossible to do the checkin online. It was impossible to correct this mistake online, they referred to customer support which I was not able to reach at all despite many attempts. So I decided to do the checkin at the airport instead. After waiting around 30 minutes in the line I explained them why I was not able to do the checkin online. They then spent 25 MINUTES trying to solve the mistake, she had to make 3 phone calls and get help from her manager to try to change the ticket from adult to teenager. Of course I had to pay €30 per person for doing the checkin at the counter instead of online. I made it in time but the line at the checkin grew a lot as everyone was waiting to solve the issue. So stupid.

Best in Sweden seem to be SBAB 4.25% (3 or 6 months lock). Or, anything better?
JimWestergren··on Card Game Rules
I love pagat.com and it is often used as an authority source of game rules. Related note: it links to my own card game that I created: https://luris.org
JimWestergren··on I hacked Magic the Gathering: Arena for a 100% win rate
Exactly. Except that they should be easily recognizable and nicely made. So for example a basic plains that you draw over and make look a bit like the card is very recommended.
JimWestergren··on I hacked Magic the Gathering: Arena for a 100% win rate
In the old school community: counterfeits absolutely not ok. Proxies normally ok except in some tournaments.
JimWestergren··on I hacked Magic the Gathering: Arena for a 100% win rate
Yes, I agree. And we don't own them. I find it a very stimulating intellectual exercise to construct a deck without those cards and still perform great. Those powerful cards have several points and only 7 points total are allowed in your deck. For example I currently choose to play Sol Ring instead of 2 of the moxes.

On a related note, I have a blast playing old school magic 93/94 with my son. Of course using physical cards. We travel to Madrid each year to participate in the world championship of 7pts Singleton. This summer my son placed #9 which I am very proud of. 7pts Singleton is such a wonderful way to play the game with diverse affordable deck-building and balanced gameplay ( https://7pts-singleton.com )

This is the blog I had since 2005: https://www.jimwestergren.com/

I am working on something like this, text-based with images. But I don't generate on the fly, I will have big lists (many thousands) of curated text outputs from GPT that get selected with randomization and nested if statements. For those interested, the game (work in progress) is Advinsula: https://advinsula.com/

JimWestergren··on Mastering Stratego
On a related note and surely interesting to the HN crowd I invented Clesto which is similar to Stratego but a bit more like chess, based on an old chinese game: https://clesto.com/ - it is more quick to play and has open information.
JimWestergren··on The FTX First Day Declaration
"Unacceptable management practices included the use of an unsecured group email account as the root user to access confidential private keys and critically sensitive data for the FTX Group companies around the world"

No wonder they got "hacked" and lost $400 M.

JimWestergren··on EasyList is in trouble and so are many ad blockers
A great opportunity right now for CloudFlare to win some goodwill and PR by helping out EasyList for free right now.

But what about simply enable a firewall and show captcha or similar if the origin IP is from India and requesting that URL until the situation is under control? I did that with the free plan recently in CloudFlare in a similar situation and it worked perfectly (of course on a much smaller scale).

JimWestergren··on Do you remember Ultima Online?
:)

It is a work in progress. I try to make some progress on each day. I don't know now when I will open the beta. Sorry if it was not enough clear, it is written under the logo.

UO is a big inspiration for the MMORPG I am working myself on called Advinsula: https://advinsula.com/
JimWestergren··on Who thought putting a casino in everyone’s pocket was a good idea?
Thank you for sharing this info, must have been a wonderful experience. Your cards must be worth a small fortune.

I played first in 1996 but had no money so no valuable cards, but I kept them all. I have now been spending around €2K to buy old cards (mostly revised and 4th edition) to make decks for playing with my son. We play an affordable format for old school, you can see more info here https://7pts-singleton.com/

Last summer we travelled to Madrid to be part of the Championship, me and my son - it was wonderful :)

JimWestergren··on Ask HN: Best way to stop bot traffic?
Try increasing the security level in CF. You could also activate Firewall rules for certain countries that are not relevant for your site, make sure to not apply it to known bots (googlebot etc).
JimWestergren··on Who thought putting a casino in everyone’s pocket was a good idea?
They are probably tournament legal in old school (cards printed in 93/94 which I play with my son) and in something called Vintage.

With multilands you must mean the Dual Lands and they have a lot of value. https://www.mtgstocks.com/lists/6 - even if they are from the revised set and have been played with we speak about at least $200 each and you probably had 20 or so in your deck.

If by original editions you mean Alpha (black border, round corners) and Beta (black border) - they have insane value depending on which cards of course.

Do you remember if the cards had black borders? Would love to see some photos of your deck :)

JimWestergren··on Who thought putting a casino in everyone’s pocket was a good idea?
Take a look at the latest crazyness cash grab from Wizards the creators of Magic: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/celebrate...

$999 for 4 packs of 15 cards in which 2 are rare. Not real magic cards - not valid for tournament play.

JimWestergren··on Botspam apocalypse
I used to do it with PHP but the problem is that then you can't cache the HTML (varnish or other solutions). Javascript don't have that problem and the added benefit of stopping bots that don't run javascript.

In the error message I have a friendly texts for human to turn on javascript if it is off and a <a href="javascript: history.go(-1);">Go back and try again</a> making them not loose the text that they have typed.
