> Remember how to allow for an optional setting (`if foo in settings` and `settings.get(foo, default)` don't work).

Instead of:

    settings.get(foo, default)
Try:

    getattr(settings, foo, default)
This looks useful. Thanks.
Jasber··on To code quickly, you must quit coding
I run into this problem and my solution has been to block distracting sites. This gets me 90% of the value of being offline without taking required APIs offline.

I wrote this to help: https://github.com/bradjasper/focus

Separation of layout and content allows you to do things like this: http://www.csszengarden.com

A few benefits that may be worth the headaches of floating divs:

* Redesign your pages without ever touching HTML (mobile/tv version)

* Improved SEO by arranging important content up top

* (Generally) lighter page sizes because CSS is in external file being cached

But I actually use floating divs because I find them easier. Tables are easy too, but after years of hacking on broken CSS--most of the thorns have faded away for me. YMMV. Use what works best.

Jasber··on A guide to the latest Mahalo spam techniques
For the same reason StackExchange breaks up their Q/A sites into niches. It's a better experience for the user. It creates a community around the niche. A brand. It builds momentum faster. What if StackOverflow, MathOverflow and Startups were all part of the same general site? It would get messy. It would lose a lot of its value from being domain specific.

Also it's better for advertisers.

It's a good idea. There's nothing wrong with what Mahalo is doing here.

I accomplish this with a simple Python script: http://github.com/bradjasper/focus

I felt guilty writing a script to stop from procrastinating, but it has actually helped tremendously.

Jasber··on Tools to Find Domain Names
Thanks for the recommendation. I've added them to the list.
Jasber··on Tools to Find Domain Names
Thanks, this is a good suggestion and something I've been thinking about lately as the number of sites listed has increased.

Do you think a description of each tool is necessary or just the "Best of" list?

Jasber··on Tools to Find Domain Names
Glad to see other people find this useful. If you have any suggestions for good tools I'm missing please let me know.
Jasber··on Haml & Sass 3 Beta Release
These syntax changes move Sass closer to things web developers are familiar with.

I believe renaming !variable to $variable is more intuitive for most web developers.

Also I've made the mistake multiple times of forgetting to use an equal sign rather than a colon.

These weren't show stoppers but they added extra complexity to an elegant solution.

I'm excited about the new changes.

Wordoid is great. Another favorite of mine is: http://www.nxdom.com/

Shameless plug: I threw up http://domaingroovy.com/ to keep track of sites like these. Maybe someone else will find it useful.

Jasber··on Distributed Version Control is here to stay, baby
Yes, I do.

But that doesn't change my statement.

If you're not willing to break your business to change with the times, someone else will--and by the time you react it's too late.

Jasber··on Distributed Version Control is here to stay, baby
I agree and don't think it's limited to programming. Considering business, it's difficult for a large established organization to make drastic changes.

It's much easier for a new entrant (startups) to innovate because they don't have the same baggage.

Press Cmd - to decrease the font size and the slides go crazy. Cmd + to increase it and they stop.

Jasber··on Reddit: IAmA grad student who has tried nearly every "study"/"smart" drug
I don't agree with this.

People without ADD experience significant benefits from using Adderall because it's an amphetamine--not because they have undiagnosed ADD.

Any amphetamine helps you think clearly through being more alert and ability to concentrate for longer periods of time.

Jasber··on Resources To Find A Great Domain Name
I threw together this page to help consolidate some of the resources I've been using over the years to find domain names.
Jasber··on Sleaze: The Dirty Business of Paid iPhone App Reviews
Assuming you provide full-disclosure for the review, why is this sleazy?

He's looking for exposure, not artificial 5-star ratings.

Yes he was a jerk and you are well within your right to decline offers like this, but I don't understand why this is sleazy.

Jasber··on Erlang Creator Joe Armstrong Wants to Ditch AJAX, Loves Chrome's New Web Sockets
As they discuss, will proxies have to specifically enable Web Sockets to allow this to replace AJAX?

I thought this was the same problem Flash sockets had, traffic being blocked.

Jasber··on Nginx module to turn it into a long-polling message queuing HTTP push server.
Have you had any problems using this in production? My understanding with using Flash/Java is that all traffic has to be tunneled through port 80 to not interfere with proxy servers. Even then sometimes traffic that doesn't look like HTTP can be blocked. Has this been a problem for you?

Jasber··on Advanced JavaScript Techniques
One solution I've used for storing small templates in HTML: http://ejohn.org/blog/javascript-micro-templating/

  <script type="text/html" id="user_tmpl">
    <% for ( var i = 0; i < users.length; i++ ) { %>
      <li><a href="<%=users[i].url%>"><%=users[i].name%></a></li>
    <% } %>
  </script>
Quick tip: Embedding scripts in your page that have a unknown content-type (such is the case here - the browser doesn't know how to execute a text/html script) are simply ignored by the browser - and by search engines and screenreaders.

This is quick and dirty, but much more elegant than writing HTML in JS.

Jasber··on To fasten your seatbelt, insert the flap into the buckle
I agree.

I was recently 4 hours into a flight from Chicago to Germany on a large double-decker Airbus when I started smelling smoke on the plane.

Suddenly I see flight attendants running to the back of the plane with fire extinguishers. Other flight attendants are running to the front of the plane with bottles of liquor.

The captain comes over the intercom: "Flight attendants, prepare for emergency landing"

Over the next 5 minutes I watch how different people react to the scenario. Some people grab hands, some start to pray, some people just close their eyes. Others start demanding up-to-the-minute information about our situation.

Without warning, we hit the ground. In a made-for-the-movies moment, the entire plane erupts in applause.

The rest of my trip I was a little nervous getting back on planes. However, the one thing that helped me keep things in perspective was something the flight-attendant said during our emergency landing:

"I have a husband in Germany. I don't want to die either. We're doing everything we can."

Simple and rational. It always works for me too.

FYI, the smoke turned out to be a coffee maker--and after several hours stuck on the tarmac in Newfoundland, we were on our way again.

Jasber··on IE6 Cheatsheet: How To Fix Internet Explorer 6 Bugs
Yes you are correct that this should hardly ever be done, and instead be handled the way you specified.

I do still think its interesting and may be useful in cases where you might have access to only CSS and not templates.

Jasber··on IE6 Cheatsheet: How To Fix Internet Explorer 6 Bugs
Another interesting one I've stumbled on is the underscore hack. This is a way to apply CSS only to IE 6: http://designpepper.com/2008/01/09/defeating-ie6-with-emphas...

#page { background-color: white; _background-color: black; }

This applies background-color black to IE 6 only, and white to everything else.

Jasber··on Ask HN: Which tool(s) do you use to install/upgrade your app on production?
Lately I've been using Fabric: http://docs.fabfile.org/

So far it meets my needs well. The only issue I had was getting my SSH key working, but I was eventually able to iron that out.
