Janteh··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (May 2014)
SEEKING WORK - REMOTE (based in The Netherlands)

Hi! I'm looking to get into the freelancing game. I'm currently employed so I'm looking for a part time gig (one day a week max) to test the waters. I've been developing since my teens, but always on the side. I now feel I'm ready to combine my product and development skills to build awesome stuff for others.

I like building tools that make people's (working) life easier. Building tools and small web apps to support people in their daily work is what I've been doing for the last couple of years, next to my work as a Product Manager. I think work like this suits my limited availability perfectly.

I build using 'full stack' Rails, started on Rails 2.3 in 2009 and have been a fan since.

You can contact me at janteh@gmail.com. I'm holding back a bit on giving out personal information here due to my ongoing employment, but can give you all my info in private.

Janteh··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
Too bad there are many 'remote but inside the US' jobs posted. Anyone got a clue why that is?
Janteh··on Show HN: Run iOS apps in the browser
That should be their headline, I didn't get what they are doing the first time I saw the page earlier today.
Janteh··on Here's the simple rule you need to know when using a foreign ATM
The same is true for credit cards I guess, I have a Dutch cc and my bank always give me a better rate than for example PayPal.
Janteh··on Planning to hack over the holidays? Heroku & Indextank Search contest
This Contest is open to software developers who are 18 years of age or older at the time of entry and who are legal residents of the United States.

Why only the US, really?

Janteh··on Zencoder joins the Heroku Add-on catalog
All their add-ons are based on either open source or third party solutions. You can keep using the open source solutions by simply installing them yourself and the third party solutions all have API's or even gems to work with.
Janteh··on ⌘Q is too damn close to ⌘W
Chrome actually reopens all tabs for you if you use the command after restarting chrome. I don't like the author's solution because I use cmd 1-9 for navigating between tabs.
Janteh··on ASk HN: Do you set life goals, 3/5 year plans?
-John Lennon

One of my favorite quotes, btw.

Janteh··on Ask HN: 300 employees, what is Twitter doing with them all?
They have, for example, one person working full-time with relatives of deceased people.
Janteh··on How To Use SSL To Secure Your Rails App Against e.g. FireSheep
Wow, I use one before_filter on my Heroku hosted app. Am I doing something wrong here, or is this just Heroku's awesomeness?

  def redirect_to_ssl
    redirect_to :protocol => "https://" unless (request.ssl? or request.local?)
  end
Janteh··on In a Digital Age, Students Still Cling to Paper Textbooks
None of my textbooks have digital versions available. I would switch if I could.
Janteh··on Why doesn’t Google have a hedge fund?
Google does have a banking license in The Netherlands, I was looking into this yesterday, but there is not much information available, I guess they are not using it. I still wonder why they got it though.

Janteh··on Google Reader reader? Would you find this service useful?
I've been looking for something like this. Often I read posts through either HN or someone's Twitter, while I'm also subscribed to the RSS feed. To have them automatically marked as read would be awesome.
Janteh··on ASk HN: How would you make $25,000 if you had $25,000?
Buy tickets for popular sport/music events, sell for double the money when the venue is sold out. Repeat.

Not that I agree with this kind of business from an ethics point of view, but it's easy money.

Janteh··on Ask HN: What SaaS apps have a great UI ?
http://wufoo.com/ is beautifully designed, really useful UI and great work with all the colors.
Janteh··on Y Combinator presents 26 new startups
I suspect that in times of crisis people tend to play it safe and start more 'simple' companies, with safer business models, instead of swinging for the fences with experimental ideas that have no clear future or business model.

Still, there are some very interesting companies in this batch that are not particularly sexy but might have great potential.

Janteh··on Well-placed Pixels - a visual record of beautiful software
Almost all applications are either for the iPhone or for the Mac. I also notice and appreciate the sophistication of a lot of these kind of programs. I still enjoy Tweetie's awesome iPhone UI every day I use it.
