> So why of all the important things in your life that you’re doing would you want to present to the world only part of your company?

Because you might be wrong, and building the wrong thing to a high level of polish = failing slow.

> To customers and investors, if it doesn’t fit their need, they move on, you rarely get a second chance.

The number of people who see your initial MVP will be minuscule compared to the number of potential customers. You don't need to get the same customers to come back; you just need to get customers.

JamieEi··on How Microsoft mobile tags are killing QR codes
Here's what Microsoft says:

Microsoft Tag vs. Other 2D Codes

Linking real-world objects to deeper experiences on mobile phones started in Japan with QR Codes. Microsoft Tag provides a next-generation solution that offers many useful improvements. Tag is an end-to-end system that provides many capabilities beyond simply opening a URL, and is built upon a highly scalable and flexible architecture.

The Tag system uses a cloud-based back-end that provides access to data that just isn’t possible with earlier QR codes, such as reporting on how frequently and where your Tags are being scanned. In addition, Tags allow you to dynamically change your data source – unlike other 2D codes that are associated with a single, permanent URL, Tags can be updated as frequently as you like to point to new websites, allowing you to reuse campaign materials.

Tags can be created in a much smaller size and can be read faster and under a wider range of lighting conditions. Tags can also be customized to your brand’s specific look and feel, creating visually exciting codes that enhance your message and brand. Learn more about creating Custom Tags.

The Tag Reader application runs on all major phone platforms, and unlike older formats, every Microsoft Tag can be read by every Tag Reader, so there is no consumer confusion from incompatible solutions. Tags just work.

JamieEi··on Russia, Glenn Beck agree: Google fomenting actual revolutions
Who is this radical left you speak of? Do you mean Comedy Central? I don't think that there is a left-wing analogue of the radical right with anything approaching the same level of organization, funding or popular impact.

I would think that as Americans we would all be on the side of people overthrowing repressive, autocratic, even murderous regimes. It saddens me that Beck et al are not.

JamieEi··on Russia, Glenn Beck agree: Google fomenting actual revolutions
That only applies to companies that are paying Beck. This is a company that is not paying Beck allowing it's worker to harm the interests of companies who do. Intellectual consistency is not a big priority here.
JamieEi··on Russia, Glenn Beck agree: Google fomenting actual revolutions
This is about defending crony capitalism. The patrons of the radical right make lots of money cooperating with authoritarian regimes in oil-rich countries, so lapdogs like Beck do what they can to move popular opinion in their favor.
JamieEi··on Last.fm co-founder: Apple just fucked over online music subs for the iPhone
Apple is already richly compensated for the additional value that their platform provides. The minute you understand that you will be a useful troll.
JamieEi··on Why are you people defending Apple?
Eventually, but many are locked in by 2 year contracts. Apple probably figures it can force them to switch from Kindle to iBooks and then once their cell phone contract is up they will have even more incentive to by an iPhone 6 because all of their content is inside Apple's walled garden.
JamieEi··on Why are you people defending Apple?
I disagree with the last part. Apple desperately wants to be in the commodity payment processing business. They want a cut of every transaction that takes place on a cell phone, which someday soon may be almost every transaction in the consumer economy. Normally the transaction processing business is a small slice of a huge pie. Apple's plan is to take a huge slice of a huge pie. Obviously it's in no one else's interest to give them all this extra pie, so Apple figures it will abuse it's market position to force everyone to go along.

It's pure evil, but that really shouldn't surprise anyone at this point.

JamieEi··on Last.fm co-founder: Apple just fucked over online music subs for the iPhone
I fear that they will "back down" to something like a 5% cut for certain types of low margin content. In other words something that looks good in comparison but is still completely unreasonable when compared to the 1% that Visa & Mastercard take. Maybe that's even been the plan all along.
JamieEi··on Apple is actually asking for 100% of SaaS mobile revenue
It would be bad enough if Apple was just demanding a 30% cut of all in-app purchases. Imagine if Visa or Mastercard tried to charge the same rates.
JamieEi··on Rhapsody passes on Apple's "economically untenable" sub plans
Rhapsody doesn't have "another" 30% to give. Their margins are probably something like 5%. Crapple is demanding 30% of the sale price, which leaves Rhapsody with a 25% loss.

Since that is economically infeasible, Apple is effectively mandating that they are the only ones who can sell content on their platform.

JamieEi··on Should Tumblr care? David Karp tells users who complain to "go away"
Meh, it means that the guy sending the email is a bit loony. It doesn't excuse responding in kind. Karp and Tumblr are a big deal. They should set a higher standard for themselves.

MS has started several labs groups that fit in between long-term academic research and product groups. For example, I work in Office Labs (www.officelabs.com). Our goals are something along what you describe in the Office / IW space.

JamieEi··on The FCC puts broadband under political control
I'm in the same situation with FIOS in the heart of Seattle, but the mayor has personally told me that it has nothing to do with regulatory hurdles. The city would love to have Verizon compete with Comcast and has tried to work with them on making it happen. They aren't interested though.
JamieEi··on Apple is just Microsoft with better marketing
So Apple didn't see the point of Google Voice? Um, ok.
JamieEi··on Apple is just Microsoft with better marketing
If Apple breaks Flash because they changed their APIs in an incompatible way they would also have broken apps that used the same APIs directly. How about if Apple just stays away from breaking changes as much as possible and, if they are occasioanlly needed, communicates them well in advance so that no one gets broken?
JamieEi··on Apple is just Microsoft with better marketing
His argument really hinges on it being rediculous for Apple to dictate what language people can program in. Comparisons to any other company are just a rhetorical device. I actually think he overstates the effects of the Windows monopoly, but even if you think he understates it that doesn't make what Apple is doing ok.
JamieEi··on Apple is just Microsoft with better marketing
Lots of people write great code on Windows. There's no reason why Apple couldn't too, if it cared.
JamieEi··on Apple is just Microsoft with better marketing
Where did the OP claim that Apple was a monopoly? Maybe it was this: "That is one difference between Apple and Microsoft- Microsoft was (still is) a monopoly, while Apple isn’t." No, that can't be it. Hmmm, I can't find it...
JamieEi··on Apple is just Microsoft with better marketing
When your OS is installed on a billion or so computers worldwide backwards-compatability is pretty important. Vista broke backwards compatability for the driver model (for excellent reasons BTW) and MS got reamed for it. It's easy to be laisse faire about backwards compatability until it is your app or your machine that is being broken.
JamieEi··on Ask HN: How many people upset over Apple's rules are actually iPhone developers?
Why are you interested? Are you suggesting that I don't have the right to be outraged if it doesn't directly affect me?
JamieEi··on Why Apple did what they did
Makes it harder for people to port apps to Android if they are written in Object C. Apple figures that the iPhone is priority #1 for everyone developing a mobile version, so they can use their TOS to raise the cost of supporting priority #2.
JamieEi··on Ask HN: What is the best qualtiy office chair for long stretches of coding?
