JackCh··on Zen Magnets: 6 Years of Battle End in Victory
No way, that's not good enough. We can't trust adults to read. The packaging needs vivid color photographs of autopsies for maximum emotional impact.

~100,000 narratives to classify and they couldn't even be bothered to have a couple interns spend a few weeks reviewing suspected narratives? All it would take is to present the suspected narrative to a human with the instances of "magnet" highlighted so the human could quickly determine if the sentence mentioning "magnet" was actually talking about one being eaten. Since when does a dumb database query with next to no diligence even qualify as science? If this is truly a matter of saving the lives of children, then surely the expense could be spared.

This whole thing is insulting.

You say "almost no one" heeds the warnings, but it's certainly not true that almost everyone gives tiny magnets to toddlers.
JackCh··on Zen Magnets: 6 Years of Battle End in Victory
They're not that easy to lose, on account of being incredibly magnetic. Even if you throw a handful across the room, they'll stay stuck to each other. If you pick them off one by one and throw them then you'll lose them, but sweep around the room with a piece of metal or more magnets and you'll find them again pretty quick.

Characterizing them as "magnetic balls of death" is very unfair considering that not many people have actually been killed or maimed by them. Driving your kids around town in a convertible is probably more dangerous than owning these magnets. Owning a swimming pool certainly is.

The FDA banned pure caffeine powder but as far as I can tell caffeine pills are still legal and widely available. I go easy on the stuff these days, but when I was younger I once took way too many (10 pills equivalent to 20 cups of coffee IIRC) and was sure I was going to die.

I understand the problem with loose powder is it makes it more difficult to get a precise dosage, but easy dosage pills won't help much if you're a dumbass who doesn't respect caffeine. Ultimately personal responsibility needs to be emphasized.

JackCh··on SEC issues warning against John McAfee’s crypto shilling
It doesn't even work well on desktop, look at this: https://i.imgur.com/i2NdHfR.png A tiny sliver of the trailing 'e' on "influence" was sliced off, so in response to that minor readability issue a horizontal scroll bar was rendered over the entire last line (and for whatever reason isn't auto-hiding). Behavior of scrolling in these sort of situations is unpredictable across platforms/browsers; the entire scenario should be avoided.

When an embattled government tries to kill a single insurgent sniper by leveling an entire city block using artillery, which side gains from that? Provoking responses that are perceived as wildly disproportionate is an intermediate objective of insurgents.

You need a lesson in common sense. Throwing more of your money at Alphabet is not going to make them a nicer company. You're deluding yourself if you honestly think that. You're in a wildly asymmetric relationship with a multi-billion dollar international corporation and you think you can win their favor by sucking up to them; it isn't hyperbole to compare this to Stockholm Syndrome.

Teach the general public to use adblockers, mpv/vlc, etc to encourage increasingly desperate responses from Alphabet. Teach people to use youtube-dl to exfiltrate data they care about, to eliminate leverage the corporation has over them. As Alphabet responds with increasing harshness, use that as further justification to get more people on your side. Every time their hand is forced and they screw over content creators even more, they lose that much more control over the situation. This form of accelerationism is a standard modern guerilla warfare tactic with proven effectiveness. This is how you fight them. Not by signing up to give them more money. No matter how much money you give them, you will never be friends with them.

JackCh··on Inside Nintendo’s “perfect” method for detecting online Switch piracy
I believe they have a financial incentive to not do this. If buying a second-hand switch is perceived as risky, then sales of new switches will be encouraged. Of course this would cause a switch to depreciate even more when you buy it since it would suppress the market price of a used switch. But I'd wager most people aren't considering how much they could get from selling their switch when they're considering buying one.

I've found that OsmAnd's directions are high quality, but it's UX needs some more TLC. It's something I can use because I found poking around at it somehow enjoyable, but it's not something I can yet recommend to people who aren't peculiar in that sense.

The deterrent against this is serious prison time. That's mail fraud, a federal crime that could hypothetically get you 20 years in prison. Standard sentencing guidelines mean you would almost certainly not get that 20 years, but it's still not the sort of crime you'd commit casually.

The hope for many, perhaps a vain one, is that negatively impacting technical organizations (open source projects or MIT's ability to host computer science course videos) will have a disproportionate effect on the developers of youtube who on average might care about about these sort of organizations more than others. It could hurt youtube developer morale and/or their ability to recruit.

> "Are they being unreasonable? Maybe, but it's not my, or your, place to decide that."

What a ridiculous statement. It's everybody's right and place to decide for themselves whether or not they think youtube is being reasonable.

JackCh··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
To be clear, that 500mm number is referring to rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) equivalency. Modern tanks use fancy composite and reactive armor to provide incredible protection. It's not actually 500mm thick, but is apparently equivalent to the protection 500mm of RHA would provide.

These sort of numbers are a bit tricky since some anti-tank weapons are more effective against modern armor than others, meaning the armor will have a different RHA equivalency ratings against different kinds of weapons. For instance, per wikipedia, the M1A1HA's turrent is rated for 600mm / 800mm vs APFSDS (sabot), and 1,300mm vs HEAT.

JackCh··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
That's right, the GAU-8 is inadequate for killing modern MBTs, but is complete overkill for any other sort of armored vehicle. It might get lucky and disable a MBT with the autocannon (it may not get through the tanks armor but could still disable the tracks, optics, etc), but really for modern tank killing it would be using something like an AGM-65 Maverick (it can carry up to six.)
JackCh··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
Sure. But it could carry even more bombs if it had an autocannon that wasn't oversized. The fully loaded GAU-8 weighs something like 1/4th the A-10s maximum bomb load.

> "The F-18 was "good enough" for low intensity combat, but is inadequate for many other deployments."

In other words it's been adequate in reality but inadequate in fantasy scenarios.

JackCh··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
The GAU-8, everybody's favorite reason to love the A-10; the autocannon the A-10 was built around, is obsolete. 30x173mm can no longer kill what it was meant for killing, and what it's actually killing in practice today can be killed just as well by 25x137mm.

If you built a new plane around a GAU-12 you'd get pound for pound more killing. Lighter smaller ammo means more of it, and trust me 25mm will kill anything you might plausibly be killing with 30mm in this century.

Don't worry though, I'm pretty sure the USAF is too arrogant to actually adopt a turboprop airplane, so the A-10 will likely be with us for the foreseeable future...

A few years ago I hit a deer. Had the deer been waiting to jump into the road from on a sidewalk instead of behind a bush, I would not have hit it. The reason I hit the deer is because I didn't know the deer was there.

When people hit deer, it's not because the deer was casually walking across the road like a human jaywalker. It's because the deer jumps into your path in an instant. As somebody who's hit a deer and done plenty of urban driving with no shortage of jaywalkers, I can assure you there is no fair comparison. The only sort of situation that might be comparable is if somebody is trying to commit suicide by car and deliberately leaps in front of you, or if a small child concealed by a car parked by the side of the road runs out into the road suddenly. But those scenarios are unrelated to this incident.

JackCh··on YouTube’s Piracy Filter Blocks MIT Courses, Blender Videos, and More
Easier to just not put anything worthwhile on bitchute to be frank. youtube-dl needs constant vigalent updates to keep it working, maintaining a fork of it is a serious long-term commitment.
JackCh··on Theranos Didn't Just Harm Investors
The third-party lab machines Theranos was secretly using will often dilute samples during their general operation. This is a known factor engineered into their design and accounted for in their certification/regulation. Theranos was secretly diluting blood samples even more, well beyond what the machines they were using were originally meant for. What they were doing was legally, ethically, and scientifically completely distinct. Prison time is definitely deserved.

As I understand it MindGeek is pretty big but still only a small fraction the size of Youtube in terms of traffic. And they've yet to create a non-porn version of their site. I've heard rumors that they've at least considered it, but so far it hasn't happened.

Very annoyingly youtube-dl refuses to support bitchute for reasons that aren't exactly clear: https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/issues/14052

If I can't get data off bitchute easily using de facto standard tools (I get that I could use a bittorrent client, but that's beyond the point), I have little interest in putting data on it.
