J_cst··on How to get your consulting fee upfront
I agree with you, my comment is not totally relevant to the subject, sorry for that. Personally at the moment I don't feel/need to ask upfront payments for my services, but in the event I'd feel that the payment should be upfront, I'd ask simply ask for it. I agree with the fact that often asking for something just works.
J_cst··on How to get your consulting fee upfront
Personally I would negotiate my hourly fee based on the project extension in time, e.g. a six months consulting contract has a lower hour rate that a few days contract. I tend to not negotiate the payment terms though, which are always 7 days following the receipt of my invoice. In Italy very often delayed payments are an issue, but for my type of consulting the customer knows that's better not to delay my payments due to the confidentiality of the matters which I deal with.
J_cst··on Best Answer to “Sell Me This Pen” I Have Ever Seen (2017)
The article reminded me that the first time I heard of that was when I saw the movie "The wolf of wall Street".

J_cst··on Netflix Pulls the Plug on Feature Designed to Get Kids Addicted to Netflix
Personally I didn't like their decision to "randomly" switch the movie's image thumbnails. This way they keep catching my attention on titles which I already decided I was not interested in. Quite annoying.

J_cst··on Estimating the chances of something that hasn’t happened yet
I am Italian and can confirm that the translation is perfectly fine. At the very beginning of the translation, in italics, the translator states that he follows Endeavour because on that blog he finds interesting articles about statistics and programming. After that he gives full credit to the author and back links the original post. To me there's nothing of suspicious or malicious.
J_cst··on Three European Countries Block Tax on Tech Giants
AFAIK Vat is a tax which insist on consumers, not on companies.
J_cst··on Ask HN: What's was the hardest part about starting to code?
I am not a professional programmer, I'm an amateur who can code python and JavaScript for small tasks. It took me many years, but finally things got better when I understood that programming is the skill of decomposing problems in small, manageable understandable taks. Once I got that, it became much easier to write my solution in my language of choice. Syntax is easy to Google for.

TL/DR : for me programming is a way of thinking with a problem solving attitude, making sure to simplify the problem as much as possible.

J_cst··on Ask HN: Anyone from Google here? The new Gmail UI is painful
For me (I'm in Italy) the best part was the request: " would you like to switch now or in two weeks?". I use the same with my kids: "would you like one portion of broccoli or two portions?". This approach gives the perception of being able to choose.
J_cst··on AI Company Accused of Using Humans to Fake Its AI
I checked your profile and blog after reading this discussion. Now I feel some regret posting that anyway, as I think my comment did not add anything valuable to this discussion and was only instrumental to reprove you, a person who I don't know. So I would like to apologize, I am sorry for my stupidity and lightness.

"Probably it is a good time for us to reflect on this, and maybe next we can try to appreciate and acknowledge others’ arguments before jumping into a rebuttal."

J_cst··on The problem of shitty software is you because you pay for this shit
Last time I tried to download the win10 iso while on windows, their site proposed me the download of something along the lines of an installation tool. Shortly after that I tried the same webpage while running Ubuntu and the site proposed me the download of the full win10 iso. I believe that the webpage checks few alternatives prior to passing you the ISO .

Just for the records:

Margin = profit / sale price Markup = profit / cost Profit = sale price - cost

I frequently meet people that are not aware of the above.

J_cst··on Apple can delete purchased movies from your library without telling you
You may still have it on your Linux machine under /use/games or similar paths (if you have Linux machine, actually). It's part of the classical Bsdgames collection and it's called 'boggle'. Man page here: https://www.mankier.com/6/boggle

I recently bumped into it by accident!

J_cst··on Mercedes Readies First Tesla Rival in $12B Attack
I've watched the video you just linked, and the review of the bolt is pretty good actually. Not sure why you linked it as if it was a bad report. Basically it says the bolt is a good car which lacks the "cool" factor due to its brand. Perhaps i misinterpreted your comment? Thanks (genuine question).
J_cst··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
Thank you
J_cst··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
Thank you for your references. The second one has little to do with the subject though. The first one confirms that "This did, indeed, block a little tar and toxic gas, but smokers, ever resourceful, responded by changing their behavior—smoking more, taking deeper puffs, etc—thereby making the practical effect of the cellulose-acetate filter approximately nil". This by the way, is what happens in the napkin "experiment" I was referring to. By the way, I just learnt that what I was calling a "filter", it is not a filter, but a mixer.[0]

TL;DR: It's a device whose purpose is to mix the smoke of the cigarette with air which is intaken via the micro holes found on the body of the mixer (a.k.a. "filter). The different air/smoke mix rates give the smoker a different perception of the smoothness / lightness of the cigarette. As a side note, as your first reference mentions, this "filter novelty" may have made things worst as the smoker will make deeper breaths and keep the smoke longer into the lungs when inhaling a more diluted smoke puff.

J_cst··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
If cigarette smoke is blown through a paper tissue it will get stained (dark brown spot)[0]. I don't think paper tissue is treated in order to become brown with cigarette smoke. Perhaps it absorbs something? On the other side, obviously, the cigarette filter (butt) does not seem effective in protecting the lungs from cancer or other smoking generated doseases. From that point of view it has only a "marketing" function.

J_cst··on Launch HN: The Buttermilk Company (YC S18) – Homemade Indian Food in 5 Minutes
That's what I actually said: here in Italy I'm spending about 20usd per day.

Thank you for your reply and your insights!

J_cst··on Launch HN: The Buttermilk Company (YC S18) – Homemade Indian Food in 5 Minutes
Do you mind to share what you eat for 20usd/week and, more importantly, in which region you achieve that? I am in Italy, and I believe that budget would suffice for maximum one day. Thank you
J_cst··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
Just to add-up on time namings, I recently learnt that in Italy we can have an appointment at the Neapolitan way (Naples is an italy city):" _let's meet at 9.00, but if I don't show up by 10, at 11 you're free to leave_ " . :)
J_cst··on Tesla is laying off ‘about 9%’ of its workforce as it ‘restructures’ the company
> am I the only one that finds this cringey and forced

You are not the only one. I also find this politically-correctness quite useless and - in this particular case - also insulting towards women.

J_cst··on An Italian Song That Sounds Like English But Is Nonsense
That's her, (name) Rita, (surname) Pavone. (Song name) Datemi un martello (Give me a hammer). She's holding an actual hammer. https://youtu.be/lGIXrziSLCQ

She's been quite popular, perhaps as much as Adriano Celentano (the one mentioned in this article link) who's been and still is very popular in Italy both as an artist and as a (political) thinker.
