JCWasmx86··on Only Windows 11 Pro will let you install Windows 11 with a local account
I don't know some laptops by name, but look for:

-Intel GPU in CPU (No firmware required/works even without)

-Or AMD GPU, Nvidia is not that linux-friendly. AMD GPU requires firmware-amd-graphics on debian

-Realtek wifi (I heard a lot of bad things about Broadcom). Requires firmware-realtek on debian

JCWasmx86··on Intel to Create RISC-V Dev Platform with SiFive P550 Cores on 7nm in 2022
I wonder whether we will sometime see RISC-V as a "replacement" (Either official by Intel/AMD or unofficial because of being better) on desktop PCs.
JCWasmx86··on Microsoft Teams 2 will use half the memory, dropping Electron for Edge Webview2
> But then with native you have to pay the cross platform price. Which is higher do you think?

You could for example use Qt. It is cross-platform and if you write your application well, the amount of platform-specific code will be quite small.

>With Electron you get cross platform more or less for free and ostensibly you can make it faster later.

It's not for-free. The effort/work for the developer is reduced, while the amount of work for the users' PC is increased. Sure, a lot will think, that this is a great deal, but at in my opinion, you should do it the other way round.

How often have you seen electron apps going faster? I never did. With a native toolkit, you have performance from the beginning for the same quality.

JCWasmx86··on New browser signal could make cookie banners obsolete
It would have to be enforced by legislation (As opposed to the dark patterns with cookie banners). If any company doesn't implement this fully compliant with the spec, fine them every year with 2-25% of the yearly revenue.
JCWasmx86··on Fastly Outage
>The issue has been identified and a fix has been applied. Customers may experience increased origin load as global services return.

Is fixed

JCWasmx86··on Windows 10 nagging users with Bing advertisements (push alerts)
Ahh ok. Thanks for clarifying. I never used DRM that much on linux
JCWasmx86··on Windows 10 nagging users with Bing advertisements (push alerts)
Why don't you watch netflix on linux? DRM is supported there, too. Or do you want to use linux only for software you trust?
JCWasmx86··on Security Issues with LastPass on Android
Nice article. Love your website. Small, no bloat, how the entire internet should be

JCWasmx86··on Preview of Microsoft Build of OpenJDK
In the about section of the repo is a typo: Microsoft Build of OPenJDK (<- The uppercase P)
JCWasmx86··on Preview of Microsoft Build of OpenJDK
It somehow still doesn't work. The repo microsoft/openjdk doesn't exist/is private.

JCWasmx86··on Preview of Microsoft Build of OpenJDK
Is it something special or is it just another OpenJDK-build with support?
JCWasmx86··on Writing Your First Kernel Module (2019)
No. It's no "weird form of DRM", it's just the enforcement of a license.
JCWasmx86··on Copyright infringement by German contact tracing app
>I really think we should encourage and act positively when commercial/corporate/enterprise crap opens up their source code.

This is true.

>When we find a GPL (or any license violation), why can't we approach it politely (in the first case), educate on the license terms and ask them to comply.

I partially agree, but those companies often have an army of lawyers. It shouldn't be the responsibility of the internet to find GPL/license-violations in their code.

>But now my worry is, with the amount of hate these guys received, other companies that are already worried about opening up their codebase and contributing back to OSS, have had their fears confirmed.

Hate is too strong. It's more criticism.

JCWasmx86··on Java 16
I did experiment with it to improve the startup times of one of my applications (Java Swing). The gain was quite small, nearly not noticeable.
JCWasmx86··on Java 16
The site works great for me.
JCWasmx86··on Java 16
I wonder, whether this could be used to compile it for termux. (Android)

You can link musl statically. So, the problems with Glibc wouldn't be there. Maybe you would have to patch musl to make it work on android.

JCWasmx86··on Java 16
Yes. It feels out-of-place. All other keywords are like one word: enum, class, public, protected, native, sealed, ...

But looks entirely different: Two words, connected by a hyphen.

But I think, it was done because of backwards compatibility. If they would have called it "closed", it would maybe break hundreds of programs that have methods/variables called "closed"
