There are a ton of industrial uses for gold:

JBReefer··on Waze Carpool
Doesn't the main Timeline use Vue?
JBReefer··on GoPro has discontinued its developer program
Do you mean post IPO? Internet funbux should have nothing to do with GoPro - they sell a real product that actually has value.
JBReefer··on Tesla Semi
Bow before your your betters, prole. Also, be sure to protest Thanksgiving and Columbus Day as racist by working - nothing says antiestablishment like free labor.
JBReefer··on Cape Coral, a boomtown that shouldn’t exist
You have reinvented Jim Crow laws, one of our greatest national shames. The fact that you think this is OK is fucking horrifying.
JBReefer··on Implementing Go's defer keyword in C++
Wouldn't this work by reference? The referenced value would be the same in both contexts.

Honestly, am I missing something?

JBReefer··on US to leave UNESCO
2015 HN: Changes to dotnet core api 1.0.1 2017 HN: The Jews control US politics.

I'm out, fuck this.

JBReefer··on BlockChain vs. Event-Driven Architecture
I agree - maybe I just don't understand? Is this peak buzzword?
JBReefer··on Yahoo Triples Estimate of Breached Accounts to 3B
Does anyone have insight on how this works? Do you just sue the pants off of the execs, or the lawyers who did due diligence, or the SREs maybe? Do the clawback the difference in goodwill + legal costs from the selling investors?

Is there recourse at all?

It'll probably the some poor schmuck SRE getting the blame, like always, right?

JBReefer··on Running Bitcoin uses a small city’s worth of electricity
Yeah, Visa is useful.
JBReefer··on Running Bitcoin uses a small city’s worth of electricity
People on HN being pro-Trump's energy plan so they can get rich off of Bitcoin. That's really surprising and really sad.

Boiling the ocean for a bit more personal wealth for the top 5% of income earners that make up the userbase of this site is ... a lot.

JBReefer··on How the Catalan government uses IPFS to sidestep Spain's legal block
By the same token, they're also not the home of a bunch of friendly companies that will implement the work, unlike China, and they don't have a long history of trying to stop the flow of information, unlike China, and they don't have a effectively infinite budget, unlike China.

I'm betting against Spain on this one. Go Catalonia!

JBReefer··on New React website
That's an absolutely beautiful website by a framework I hope to never use again.

React feels so much nicer and it's use of Vanilla JS makes it so much easier to debug. It's a breath of fresh air.

JBReefer··on Yes, We Get Wiser with Age
Hey, it sounds like you're wiser than you used to be, now that you're older! The rest of these posts are so arrogant, it's sad.
JBReefer··on A 400-year story of progress – How America became the world’s biggest economy
Hey can someone explain this position? You see it a lot on the internet - we all know it's just short for the mouthful of "The United States of America", right?

Is it just garden variety anti-Americanism, or is it based on something else? You also see the form "American means anyone from both continents," which is off in exactly the same way.

JBReefer··on Monsanto’s Weed Killer, Dicamba, Divides Farmers
You're absolutely right - to add on, it's also the need to better disseminate farming technologies to people in the developing world, who get poor yields compared to Western farms (both organic and conventional).
JBReefer··on Monsanto’s Weed Killer, Dicamba, Divides Farmers
If the yield of food per labor unit goes down, and we want to feed the worlds poor (aka keep food prices at least flat), that necessitates a substantial drop in farm labor wages. Seeing as migrant laborers are already pretty close to being slaves, reducing their wages is not going to result in a conscionable working situation.

I'd take environmental degradation over slavery, to be honest.

JBReefer··on How to hack a turned-off computer, or running unsigned code in Intel ME
Holy shit
JBReefer··on iOS 11 reviewed
The new default image/video codec that no other browser supports seems like it's going to be ... interesting. Of course they couldn't use VP9, just like USB-C - this is marginally better, and completely fucks over everyone developing outside the tiny Apple ecosystem.
JBReefer··on iOS 11 reviewed
In what way? That seems like an extremely serious problem, given how many LOB apps run on Windows Server.
JBReefer··on How to Kill a Possum
Does this person represent the average Californian? She seems so disconnected from everything, it's kind of sad. The fact she seriously considered a blowtorch is disturbing. I did enjoy that she recognizes that her political positions may have flaws, and worked through some cognitive dissonance about the utility of firearms, and she has a strong artistic voice, to her credit.

Is this what people in Oakland are like? There's something so sad about this story.

JBReefer··on Silicon Valley CEO Called Employees the N-Word and Hit Three Women, Suit Claims
Oh absolutely, but making the steps they take to get there as non-genocidal as possible is also very important.

There's video of him striking his SO 117 times, hopefully he goes to prison and stays there.

JBReefer··on Silicon Valley CEO Called Employees the N-Word and Hit Three Women, Suit Claims
For those who check the comments first - read this article. It's short, and his behavior is honestly horrifying. He sounds like an actual sociopath that has no human decency.
JBReefer··on Silicon Valley CEO Called Employees the N-Word and Hit Three Women, Suit Claims
Arguably, it's better that these people are in private industry than in government, which might be considered a feature of the system. Some have argued that civilization is mostly concerned with the management of sociopaths: this guy seems fucking horrible, but at least his ambition took him here, instead of being the "Duke of Feeding People and Medicine" or something where his shittyness would kill people.

I feel kind of gross writing that, for the record, but think it's true.

JBReefer··on Rolling Stone, Once a Counterculture Bible, Will Be Put Up for Sale
I think it's shocking how normative the culture is today. Fringe media says exactly the same things - pro-social justice, pro-a large social safety net, deep concern about climate change - as the major media. The only actual "counterculture" seems to be Breitbart et al, which is ... a change.

Paper Magazine, the New York Times, and Gothamist now mostly reflect the same cultural ideals. It's fascinating. Was this what the 80s was like?

JBReefer··on BlackBerry Inventor Says Canada's Challenge Is Keeping Techies
Not the central parts of Kansas City, which is where I'm from. You can walk or bike everywhere in the urban rectangle from River Market to Waldo, and the bus is workable (but imperfect). It's also a short drive to 98% of where you'd want to go, and it's insanely cheap.

I would move back immediately if my family wasn't here in NYC. People have really lost their minds since the election and I'm tired of only ever hearing about politics.

I do agree that a lot of Midwestern suburbs are horribly depressing and conformist, but there's a lot more to the Midwest.

JBReefer··on iPhone X
It has Bluetooth comms to up to 8 Joycons and a general purpose operating system, so the limitation is probably a lacking audio implementation, not physical impossibility.
JBReefer··on iPhone X

JBReefer··on The Mystery of a Lost Roman Herb
Garum also lives on as Worcestershire sauce, which unlike colatura is still fermented. I'm happy you showed me this, it's incredible to see living Roman history, still 2,000 miles apart!

JBReefer··on Cancer's invasion equation
Name one great author that wrote succinctly, besides Hemingway, Mark Twain, or Orwell. Or the Spartan poets. /s
