JBReefer··on Tesla Faces U.S. Criminal Probe Over Musk Statements
saying mean things doesn't hurt people - even if they're really horrible, they're just words. Providing guidance that is false or intended to hurt people, like Elon's tweet, is fundamentally different.
JBReefer··on Driverless Hype Collides with Merciless Reality
That is extremely dystopian
JBReefer··on Sheryl Sandberg Misled Congress About Facebook’s Conscience
England has hate speech laws that produce _ridiculous_ outcomes, like a guy getting fined because he made a dumb gif of his dog Sig Heiling.
JBReefer··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
I have a feeling that the majority of the commenters here would not be happy with the results of an armed revolution. You can be snarky on the internet all you want, but guns win wars, and there's a hell of a lot more guns in Texas than California.

Hell, if you want to go down a very concerning rabbit hole, look up youtube videos of people prepping for a communist revolution. There's a lot of mass murder pre-planned for the end of democracy.

JBReefer··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
But absolute freedom of speech IS A LEFT WING OPINION! Is no one here old enough to remember the fight over pornography or offensive language in art/music/movies? That was the right trying to shut down speech they disagreed with via corporate power! These people are _not_ liberals, they're something else that's new and terrifying
JBReefer··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
The comments in this thread are shocking, Inquisition level stuff. I can't believe I spend time here.

Remember when HN was tech stuff? Now it's:

The following views were listed on the memo:

  * Support of President Trump (e.g. This and Palmer Lucky's campaign contributions)

  * "All lives matter"

  * Criticism of Islam's human rights record.

  * Calling the company's art politically radical .

Which, if any, of these views don't deserve respect?

The first three are deeply problematic and rooted in deep-seated white supremacist beliefs and were it up to me
I would fire anyone who held those views.
Sorry, that’s just how I have to feel these given everything that’s been going on these days.
Who are these people? Is this just satire? Am I just getting old, and no one cares about freedom to disagree, debate, etc? Do people not have historical context about suppressing dissenting opinions, even if you hate them?

Am I crazy, and the world has just moved on to be horrible?

JBReefer··on BuzzFeed News Asks Readers to Chip in with Donations
There are a lot of people who feel the Times has gone steeply downhill in the last few years. Personally, I've gone from an avid subscriber to never visiting.

The Journal, the Economist, and the BBC are my go to these days.

JBReefer··on Hey Google, tell me something good
... literally everything that's happened in the last 10 years?
JBReefer··on Nobody Trusts Facebook, Twitter Is a Hot Mess, What Is Snapchat Doing?
At this point I just take everything I hear about the valley as gospel - but always assume there's a healthy dose of harassment. So, so happy there's other options for tech.
JBReefer··on Vietnam Going Solar After Nuclear Power Plants Shelved
Or you could consider it a signal that in one of the most orderly, fastidious, and organized cultures on the planet (probably THE most), people still manage to catastrophically fuck up nuclear, and if the Japanese can't do it, realistically no one can.
JBReefer··on Why does it take so long to mend an escalator? (2002)
Ladies and gentlemen, the most expensive real estate market in the Western hemisphere!
JBReefer··on Are Flat-Earthers Being Serious?
That's literally the orthodoxy that makes the joke funny though. How does someone being a hollow earther hurt you? How does your sister believing in crystals impact you? People should be kinder to each other and should jump down peoples throat a bit less, that stuff is what makes the world fun.

My wife believes in that astrology nonsense, I don't really care and it makes her happy. What IS annoying are the "ackshually" people on social media any time any of that comes up - which is exactly who Flat Earth is making fun of.

JBReefer··on Are Flat-Earthers Being Serious?
No, it's a joke making fun of the "IFLScience" people who mindlessly parrot back what they read on social media as gospel truth. There's been a resurgence in science-as-politics for the political class, so people who have no idea what they're talking about have decided they're scientists, by virtue of their politics.

The Earth is obviously round, but the reaction is really, _really_ funny. I don't get why that isn't obvious.

JBReefer··on Thailand cave rescue: all 12 boys and coach successfully rescued
I like the guy, I'm pretty sick of his fans
JBReefer··on Things That Happen in Silicon Valley and Also the Soviet Union
The people that tend to think America is awful in my experience overwhelmingly tend to be American. Most non-Americans seem to have good things to say.
JBReefer··on Please stop asking me to use the app
This this this. That's why there are a million fly-by-night Craigslist competitors, and then there's Craigslist.

It works the same way it did in 1999, so my grandma can still sell stuff on it. That's it. Done. It's probably made way more money by not changing anything than by increasing CPMs 5% by playing a fullscreen ad every 6 seconds.

JBReefer··on Anti-Fascist MIT license
This is cool, even if edgy. What are some other interesting licenses? Is there a fascist only license? What about anti-communist licenses, or licenses only for communists?

Can I license my project ONLY to one ethnicity or religion? I know you can be discriminatory for clubs, like YMCA used to be, or the JCC, but can you be for IP?

JBReefer··on China Unsolved: Who Poisoned Zhu Ling?
I think it really depends on where you live. Where I grew up in Kansas City, the cops were great. The NYPD has been enormously helpful to me and a bunch of my friends when needed.

Cops in Troy, Albany, and DC seem to be SPECTACULARLY worthless, at best. Cops in the suburbs in my experience are universally assholes and power tripping. Similarly, I've heard horror stories about cops in LA, Portland, etc, except they seem to just not do anything at all (besides beating up black people).

Sounds like it could be cultural to departments?

JBReefer··on [dead]
Yeah, same with the wonderful new bike lanes, public plazas, ferry system, new bridges, new subways, etc. This is a nostalgia piece that misses the days where bars in the UWS where cheap because it was a hole (aka when my parents lived in the UWS).

This still exists, in roughly the same form - it's called Baltimore.

JBReefer··on Ask HN: What is the first thing you implement at a new company?
How long did you last? I worked somewhere like that, most engineers lasted 3 months, I managed to squeeze out 4!

Places with issues like that tend to have TONS of other very serious issues.

JBReefer··on Nation’s top three most expensive places for renters: all in Bay Area

JBReefer··on Illegal Memes? Weak Safe Harbor? Unpacking the Proposed EU Copyright Overhaul
Ding ding ding! It's not an unreasonable strategy, either - the choice is only the taxes from local operations, or huge fines + effective tariffs on doing business to encourage local firms to spring up. I know what I would do, if I was France and had exactly 0 Googles.
JBReefer··on Faster – A key-value store for large state management
"FASTER access error" "FASTER login" "FASTER keys"

Not great.

JBReefer··on For Static Sites, There’s No Excuse Not to Use a CDN
0.3 seconds seems really long for that - are you storing the files on disk or in memory?

I mean I really agree with you and think more people should do exactly what you're doing, but comon, let's bikeshed this at least a little :)

JBReefer··on Ask HN: Which companies have the best engineering culture?
The canonical answers seem to be:

* Fog Creek

* Stack Overflow

* (sometimes) Microsoft (private offices, supposedly going away)

* RedHat

Basically anywhere that passes the Joel Test. In my experience, that seems to be accurate - with more emphasis needed on a quiet, low interruption environment.

JBReefer··on Half of all adults in the world have less than $2,300 in wealth (2016)
No, it's a redistributive system alright, just not the way people hope.
JBReefer··on US government to use facial recognition technology at Mexico border crossing

JBReefer··on How to build a basic Salesforce REST API integration
The product they're describing/selling is very creepy - I don't want anyone to be notified when I'm browsing a pricing page. Are you serious?
JBReefer··on Ask HN: What is the best blog/article you read on internet?
The Truth About Cars. Product Management, strategy, and product-market-fit are not isolated to software, and we're frankly not very good at them compared to 100 year old companies.

Watching Tesla show the faults in the SV way of doing things has been really fascinating, for example.

JBReefer··on Tesla won’t give drivers their own crash data without a court order
I get your point but I think arguing information about the state of your home is PII would be fairly straightforward.
