Ithildin··on SDF vs. MSDF vs. Slug: GPU Text Rendering
Then don't. I'm incredibly tired of people complaining about it. This is the world now. We're going to be interfacing with these models until we take the long nap. A models personality and prose are fine things to comment and give feedback on, but this belly-aching is worse than what it said in the first place because it's not constructive at this point.
Ithildin··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Someone come get me if they release the Epstein files. Otherwise... that's nice, dear.
Ithildin··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
Going forward, I simply will not be purchasing any game that does not work on Linux. I realize that I'll be missing out on some titles, but Windows simply isn't worth the headache. CachyOS has been working great for me. Proton has been amazing. I have had zero problems with the games I typically play -- some of which are multiplayer. Luckily, I have not run into anti-cheat issues yet.
Ithildin··on Incident with Github.com
On the plus side, Fable is sooo snappy right now with everyone blocked by GitHub. I've never seen such fast response times.
Ithildin··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
Like many other critiques along this line, I think the answer is: Yes, for now. For example, in my own code base, I have an agent dedicated to maintaining a sane data model. This agent reviews the plan in advance and again during code review. And then I review the code myself. This seems to be sufficient for my work, at least. YMMV. It was a good post though. I enjoyed the take and the writing.
Ithildin··on Our commitment to Windows quality
Nothing in this article made me think they even understand the problem. I don't know what I expecting, though. I mean, the first thing they mention is the ability to move the taskbar around? Oh wow. Yeah, they have no idea what's wrong.
Ithildin··on New accounts on HN more likely to use em-dashes
This was super relatable. Thank you for sharing. You're definitely not alone in this.
Ithildin··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
If I do something faster by pairing with AI, why should my employer reap the benefit? Why would I pass the savings on to my employer?

Could it be that employers are not seeing the difference because most employees are doing something else with the time they've saved by using AI?

There's been massive wage stagnation, benefits are crap, they play games with PTO. Most people I talk to who use AI as a part of their workflow are taking advantage of something nice that has come their way for a change.

Ithildin··on DOGE Takeover of USDS Allows Them to Surveil the US Government from the Inside
Not realizing the implications of an oligarch who bought his way into the federal government with apparent conflicts of interest is equally reaching and dogmatic. This article asks the right questions. We should be concerned about this and keep a watchful eye on it.
Ithildin··on Making an intersection unsafe for pedestrians to save seconds for drivers
Aside from the debate, 600k seems insanely high for this intersection. No wonder this country's infrastructure is crumbling when it takes over half a million dollars to put in a few lights.
Ithildin··on Tesla wins first US Autopilot trial involving fatal crash
What was the drivers BAC? Does anyone know?
Ithildin··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
This trend is absolutely ridiculous. I'm currently in "Round 3" and have FIVE interviews this week, four of which are technical. I already passed the technical in Round 2.

As someone with 10+ years experience in the industry, I've about had it with these technicals. I'm just going to start refusing. I'm happy to have a long technical discussion on my work experience and to provide you with portfolio examples. Take your hacker rank problems and get out of here.

Ithildin··on Show HN: Reddit Wallstreetbets Top Leaderboard
Agreed. It would be nice if you could click on one and see the top X most recent mentions, or at least the links to those comments.
Ithildin··on The Power and Paradox of Bad Software
"The software industry makes amazing tools for itself, while doctors and scientists are stuck with old code. Tech needs to quit hacking and start listening."

Then pay for better software? Take your money elsewhere? I don't understand what we're supposed to do here. I get it, your industry has old software. Maybe hire us to make it better? Not my problem you're still using Windows XP and Fortran though. Sounds to me like corners were cut and budgets were not set appropriately.

Ithildin··on Tesla ranks last on influential JD Power quality survey
JD Power is a fake award invented by the auto companies to give themselves anyway. I put zero stock in what gets awarded. It's complete BS.
Ithildin··on AirSim: open-source simulator for autonomous vehicles
How is this different than CARLA? Just curious.
Ithildin··on Trails of Wind: Data Visualization of the Architecture of Airport Runways
Because nobody wants to drive there.
Ithildin··on Epic Games Supports Blender Foundation with $1.2M
That's great news. I've learned Max and Maya, but my brain could never wrap itself around Blender. I'd definitely try it again once the update comes out.
Ithildin··on Millennials Didn’t Kill the Economy. The Economy Killed Millennials
Millennials have made up a smaller, but growing demographic since 2000. What about the other, larger demographics? If you wanted us to make better choices, you shouldn't have left us with the current problems without properly equipping us. Now we're trying to solve today's issues as best we can given our circumstances all while you complain and moan. A thank you is all you need to say, really. We're bailing out your lifestyle and voting choices of the past at the cost of our own. We don't always get it right, but we're learning fast. Just be sure to step aside when the time comes so we can actually make some meaningful change in the world.
