Isognoviastoma··on A case against currying
> curried functions often don't compose nicely

Same for imperative languages with "parameter list" style. In python, with

def f(a, b): return c, d

def g(k, l): return m, n

you can't do

f(g(1,2))

but have to use

f(*g(1,2))

what is analogical to uncurry, but operate on value rather than function.

TBH I can't name a language where such f(g(1,2)) would work.

Isognoviastoma··on John Carmack about open source and anti-AI activists
Current social consensus is that copyright exists and one can only use software on conditions stated in license. Thus, proprietary and copyleft have same protection.

Another possible consensus would be that copyright don't exist, and anyone can copy proprietary or copyleft work and improve it. Nobody would be harmed in such situation, original author still have its copy. I would have no problem with such state - but it must be same for everyone, not just FOSS.

Isognoviastoma··on John Carmack about open source and anti-AI activists
Copyleft is copyright held in smart way. Nobody can take code under GPL and make its _copy_ proprietary because it would be violation of copyright.

In the other thread you argued that AI output is not copyrighted.

Do you think I can take proprietary code and lauder through AI to get a non-copyrighted copy of it, then modify to my needs? How can I obtain the proprietary code legally in the first place?

Isognoviastoma··on John Carmack about open source and anti-AI activists
Most of FOSS is not a free gift, but asks for some form of repay.

MIT asks for credit. GPL asks or credit and GPL'ing of things built atop. Unlicense is a free gift, but it is a minority.

AI reproduces code while removing credit and copyleft from it and this is the problem.

Isognoviastoma··on Can text be made to sound more than just its words? (2022)
Easy to check: try to speak with someone talking foreign language you don't know and estimate what percentage of what they said you understood from tone of voice etc. I would guess it's less than 80%.

Isognoviastoma··on Every HTML Element
It's impressing that browser can display many levels of recursive iframe.
Isognoviastoma··on Fixed-point arithmetic as a replacement for soft floats
√2 with floating point is obviously closest representable number. With fixed point it is obviously closest representable number as well. With rationals, you need to arbitrarily limit precision, and the point of using rational was to use exact values.
Isognoviastoma··on Fixed-point arithmetic as a replacement for soft floats
- after few operations denominator exceeds 64-bit range, so you either need bigint, or make fractions approximate, what is in affect fixed point

- often you use decimal fraction on output and input anyway

- it's slower, even slower with bigint

- no square root, sin, and so on with rationals

Thanks for sharing! A bit of css, and it's possible to read mastodon posts with a web browser!

Isognoviastoma··on Ask HN: Any legal way against forced software upgrades and feature removal
Was nvidia driver foss or proprietary?
Isognoviastoma··on Ask HN: Any legal way against forced software upgrades and feature removal
With proprietary software, how many times a producer did fix breakage or add missing feature for you because you bought a licence (subscription)? How fast was it?
Isognoviastoma··on Glove80 Ergonomic Keyboard
Keycap displays could be used to shuffle letters, thus prevent touch typing and force neck moves.
Isognoviastoma··on Chronosort
Chronosort is closer to radix sort, as both are O(n) if values are bounded. Queue-sort (aka heapsort) is O(n log n).
Isognoviastoma··on Why I develop on Windows
There are two commands that do work in shebang: /bin/sh and /usr/bin/env. Everything else will break sooner or later: BSDs, Nix, Linux distros with separate /bin and /usr/bin and so on.
Isognoviastoma··on Shapecatcher: Draw the Unicode character you want

Isognoviastoma··on Richardson Maturity Model
Call it "JSON API", that pinpoints all important characteristics of most "REST" APIs lacking HATEOAS.
Isognoviastoma··on Surprisingly Turing-Complete (2021)
Right, I forgot storage. Yet in the context of "a model (spreadsheet) with bounded storage and bounded computation steps count is TM complete when looping is externalized", one can externalize storage as well, or encode storage in DFA states and use bigger DFA when storage of current runs out, or handwave storage unboundedness as in argument about spreadsheet.

Also DFA has no looping as in "doing infinite computation steps over finite input".

Isognoviastoma··on Surprisingly Turing-Complete (2021)
Notably, finite automata are Turing complete. (TM is DFA + looping).
Isognoviastoma··on Ask HN: How much does the environment you're in contribute to performance?
Reading this I think I understood what's behind "some tangential thing is majority of success" claims: it is multiplier, not percentage of absolute level.

"One can be 4x more performant when led by empowering rather than bureaucratic boss" is plausible. "Unskilled, slacking person will achieve nearly as much as skilled one in same team" is questionable.

Isognoviastoma··on Double Commander
Nope, depending on your workflow, you can miss features of Krusader like archive integration, browsing over ssh, lock-step navigation in panels, selection modes, builtin editor/viewer formats coverage and other tiny yet comfortable goodies.

Double Commander is an acceptable substitute of Krusader on non-Unices.

Isognoviastoma··on Chris Lattner left Swift core team
C begins to increase rate of adding breaking changes.

C23 is about to

- add keywords that was valid identifiers before

- remove K&R parameter syntax

- change semantics of the most popular function argument list declaration

- forbid representations other than 2's complement

Isognoviastoma··on The baseline for web development in 2022
It's like turning your car's engine off overnight because that uses fuel.
Isognoviastoma··on Mozilla tests if 'Firefox/100.0' user agent breaks websites
> Firefox is may freeze the user agent to a two-digit number like "Firefox/99.0."

Opera did that when version went up from 9 to 10. Too many websites looked at first digit of version rather that doing feature discovery back then.

Useragent string of Opera 12 is "Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.18".

Isognoviastoma··on Pass: The standard Unix password manager
That's how I use pass on Linux. A key shortcut is bind to script that calls "xdotool getwindowfocus getwindowname", selects credentials set based on it, asks for master password with pinentry-qt if needed, then types with "xdotool type --file -".

It works and is better than placing password in clipboard and than "xdotool type $pass". Likely worse than proper integration with password consumer.

Isognoviastoma··on Links are not buttons (2013)
This is great example of what is wrong with many SPAs. They should not be applications in first place. Why is it using tons of JS to display few paragraphs of static text? It could be hosted as static html pages. It also kind-of works in lynx, but totally don't in FF without JS.
Isognoviastoma··on Ask HN: How do I improve boring README page?
Telling what concrete problem you solve already place you ahead of many Apache projects. "single storage that can handle both relational and graph model data". Some short example of usage would be nice too.

To illustrate, let's look at summaries of top popular projects (by number of commits, because that's what Apache shows on stats page):

> Camel is an Open Source integration framework that empowers you to quickly and easily integrate various systems consuming or producing data.

> Apache Flink® — Stateful Computations over Data Streams [here image of taking events and DB as inputs of process]

> Airflow is a platform created by the community to programmatically author, schedule and monitor workflows.

??? Why would i need them?

> Apache Spark™ is a unified analytics engine for large-scale data processing. > spark.read.json("logs.json").where("age > 21").select("name.first").show()

> Lucene Core is a Java library providing powerful indexing and search features, as well as spellchecking, hit highlighting and advanced analysis/tokenization capabilities.

These tell or show what they do. Good.

Isognoviastoma··on Write site-specific extensions to replace sites' JavaScript code
There is fundamental difference of how people think about www.

For some, it is execution environment for Web Apps, where backend-frontend split and communication over network is accidental, basically internal for App. Either run in latest version of one-three of top browsers or go away. Logic and security checks can be implemented in frontend in order to save server's electricity, because it will be run in browser anyway.

For some, it is Protocol which is implemented by User Agents to fetch resources exposed by Servers and display it to them. User Agent can be unmodified or heavily customized top browser, lynx, dillo, curl, telnet, specialized tools[1]. JS should be optional nearly always. It is them who is controlling what his computer is executing. From this thinking goes aversion to 30-seconds loading sites, lack of Progressive enhancement[2] going to the point of requiring JS to load blog post, emphasis on server-side validation.

From this difference come many misunderstanding and sometimes conflicts.

Isognoviastoma··on The Enduring Myth of Stranger Danger
Notice that demand for abducted children is inelastic in regard to number of children walking around the neighborhood. This means there are two equilibrium points of walking children market: first is letting them play as much as they wish, making probability of abduction of _your_ children as small as it can be; second is letting them out almost never, with probability of abduction for a walk being 1. Which of that do you prefer?
Isognoviastoma··on Amazon: Not OK – Why we had to change Elastic licensing
In short, Amazon don't follow law of trademarks. Then, Elastic instead of enforcing their rights in court, changes license in hope that Amazon will follow law of copyright. How do they expect it will work? I don't get it.
