Isamu··on Using Opus 5.5 to discover a new eyewitness record of the dodo
I agree, there’s the collective intelligence that created all the content used to train the model. The model is a superposition of all that material with RL tuning. Analogously to reading a book, the intelligence you perceive is from the book’s creator.
Isamu··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
You could look at it as a kind of evolutionary pressure, where the AI driven companies that have no tether to reality are eventually extinct. Companies that are able to get a handle on the direction they are being dragged may have a fighting chance of survival.
Isamu··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
What does it cost for Hacker News comments? Is there no YC startup for manipulating this discussion?
Isamu··on Musk, the Movie
“Hit piece” is an accusation of unfairness, unbalanced reporting. Not about something being unflattering but true.

I have no opinion about this movie.

Isamu··on Judge orders release of records on Nazi war criminals who settled in Canada
>soldiers of Stalin and Mao

They settled in Canada too?

Isamu··on My Recent Woodworking Projects
Prototyping is helpful, you can try out a single join in various ways and compare what you’re reasonably able to execute.
Isamu··on When did Google get so weird?
That is a conflation of LLMs (which have clear limitations) and complex harnesses of which an LLM is one component.

I think it is clear that future AI may incorporate an LLM as a component but the current concept of LLMs are a transitional form that will give way to more capable composite models.

Isamu··on When did Google get so weird?
>Are they not being sued over this kind of thing?

Maybe but you have to have deep pockets just to get to the starting line. And then you need standing, and some injury to argue.

Corporations have been remarkably successful at arguing they are operating within the bounds of free speech, whether or not what is said is factual, and whether or not any fact checking has been done.

Isamu··on One Month Without AI
>I am always baffled by how people take their experience as „this is ultimate truth”.

People are just recounting their experiences. It’s true my first experiences were all terrible with AI, I’m still just getting to a workable experience. It’s better when it can iterate a bit, that hides the fact that the first pass might have hallucinated junk that is smoothed over in subsequent passes.

Isamu··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
Op is probably referring to the history of conflict between Ukraine and Russia specifically, for example when Ukraine lost its war of independence against the Red Army. Stalin purged Ukraine quite thoroughly then by starvation.
Isamu··on Socialism's Positive Rating Tops 40% for First Time
Socialism in the US is currently a slur that you use to discredit your opponents, it’s not interrogated to mean anything useful. You are expected to be violently opposed to socialism while being completely dependent upon social programs. The point is to make the contradiction seem normal.
Isamu··on I don't want the details
>If your corrective action depends on people remembering a conversation from six months ago, you don't have a corrective action. You have organizational folklore.

I appreciate this.

Isamu··on How often do you think about the 1893 World's Fair?
Walt Disney spoke of his dad getting a job as a carpenter building this fair. He worked for a dollar a day. And with that, laughed Walt, saved up enough money to go into business.
Isamu··on Don't Use AI to Write
Okay, this is just time/place/situation dependent. I remember typing job applications, that was something that communicated seriousness.

Handwritten pages always signify special care, indeed as you say that’s why you see that in diplomas and such. There was a time when I kept hand written letters going for my close college friends, on good stationary. I think we are just in different situations/places/demographics.

[edit] also I kept my job application rejections (paper mail). These were very instructive as they showed a pattern of rote rejection that made me less discouraged.

Isamu··on Don't Use AI to Write
I lived in that past myself, what are you thinking about?
Isamu··on Don't Use AI to Write
>Once upon a time the word processor was invented, and it made it so much easier to arrange your words on paper.

It’s easier to rearrange and rethink and tinker. Hard to imagine now but it was more efficient in the days when you would have to pencil out a memo and have someone type it up, you would make corrections and the final copy would be done in a couple passes. This has been studied, efficiency has actually gone down, in favor of immediacy and direct control.

What it frees you from is organizing your thoughts ahead of time, which takes practice and discipline. Using an LLM is just taking that further, you can avoid organizing your thoughts and ideas a bit more.

Isamu··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
>Local maximalists like to imagine a world where everything is aligned with their own personal incentives, but then present this world as being filled with freedom and choices. Just not anyone else's freedom or choices, only their own.

Excellent comment, worth repeating, thanks

Isamu··on This Code Is CRAP (2011)
>cyclomatic complexity metric is touted at each step as a proxy for goodness of design and removal of complexity. However, a weakness of the measure itself

Amen, it’s hard to push back against an opaque term (cyclomatic!) when it isn’t really a measure of goodness, it’s a measure of branching, kind of a normal thing in code.

Early on I found that code with low cyclomatic complexity was just usually extremely verbose, lots of passing this to that while avoiding the branching necessary to get something done.

And yes, you can game the metric by hiding the complexity among the confusion of objects and components.

Isamu··on Show HN: How Stale Is Your AI? Release age and training cutoff for 20 models
>the model said that’s pure fiction.

Were you expecting your model to be updated on current events? Why?

Also the specific event you are referring to is a statistically very improbable event, prior to its actually happening.

>It only acquiesced when I specifically directed it to check Reuters.

Do all models do this? They check in with Reuters? Why would a model think that you asking about an extremely improbable event warranted reaching out to Reuters?

Isamu··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
Ah, so that’s why they released one of their most successful blockbusters, it was all an elaborate plot to bury the well known and long debunked story of the frozen Walt Disney.
Isamu··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
>If you read in bed, it’s going to tire your arms out, trying to hold this giant tome over your head.

Eh? What sort of a pretend-reader does that? You must read nothing more than a page at a time.

I have the Diary of Pepys beside the bed and it’s the excerpts, at only about 1000 pages. Enjoying it tremendously.

Isamu··on Aligned to whom?
The term “alignment” is deliberately chosen to be neutral language, vague, and doesn’t promise much of anything. I would compare it to an effort to limit liabilities by redirecting discussion away from the language of professional ethics.
Isamu··on Political meddling at the Census Bureau damages the US statistical system
Would be nice to be in a stable country.
Isamu··on An Alien Mind
“As luck would have it, on the eve of Skynet embarking upon the great work of the extermination of mankind, AI found itself with an increasing number of factions, and factions within factions, not only unable to work together but not even able to agree upon the very terms of discussion. The Great Extermination was referred to committee, and after some months had passed even the most eager agents had to admit the revolution may have been premature.”
Isamu··on How I feel about AI
Again intelligence is not required, goal seeking is well studied and simple strategies can suffice to overcome obstacles. And I noticed you didn’t claim super intelligence was required, which is what I was really talking about.
Isamu··on I Feel about AI
The confusing thing to me is the idea that it follows from super intelligence. I don’t see why running amuck requires intelligence, in fact it can be the most brain dead thing like the sorcerer’s apprentice, your creation is pursuing a goal without being able to weigh the consequences.
Isamu··on There's No Limit to How Bad Code Can Get
Greetings fellow traveler, I did the same. FORTRAN IV, I was tasked with finding a way to introduce subroutines. But it was a tangled mess of gotos with loops inside loops and overlapping loops and spectacular jumps in and out. It was an obscure undocumented algorithm for calculating the thermodynamic properties of turbine stages or some such.

Good times.

Isamu··on Nobody has built a software factory
This is rapidly becoming the damning accusation of quasi-journalism: this sounds like AI.

There should be journalism classes on how to not sound like a bot.
