InquilineKea··on Peter Thiel on Progress and Stagnation
as an obsessive observer of his over the past decade, I've been concerned... It could be a product of his increased concern over public media coverage in general (he keeps his really interesting views just to himself, as Nick Cammarata mentions on Twitter), and this trend may have only intensified recently, as he has been strangely quiet
InquilineKea··on Freeman Dyson Has Died
Actually someone I know who knows Minsky says that Minsky wasn't really sharp towards his later years [that said, he still mentored students, and the Nectome cofounder was one of his last students]..

What are some microsensors that can be used to detect concentration of a protein or molecule that can then be used to make a "decision"? E.g. aggregated proteins or concentration of a particular mRNA or 4-HNE or lipofuscin accumulation?

What are some concrete synthetic biology workflows whose labor costs have been reduced by this?

Why do you advertise this as "being for biologists" and also "for downloading drugs" at the same time? Biologists do much much more than just synthesize drugs.

How does the program "execute" a decision once, say, it detects that the percent molar composition of molecule A exceeds that of molecule B?

InquilineKea··on More than 95% of world's population breathing unhealthy air, says new report
trees still produce air impurities beyond just pollen :)
InquilineKea··on More than 95% of world's population breathing unhealthy air, says new report
Is living near a major roadway (e.g. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/01/brain-pollution-evide... ) also sufficient to cause unhealthy air?

>> Deepening the concerns, this month researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada reported in The Lancet that among 6.6 million people in the province of Ontario, those living within 50 meters of a major road—where levels of fine pollutants are often 10 times higher than just 150 meters away—were 12% more likely to develop dementia than people living more than 200 meters away.

>> Just how the fine airborne particles might travel from a rodent’s nasal cavity to its brain is a mystery. But a research team led by Günter Oberdörster at the University of Rochester in New York has used traceable, radioactive specks of elemental carbon to demonstrate that inhaled particles smaller than 200 nanometers can get through the delicate tissues lining a rodent’s nasal cavities, travel along neurons, and spread as far as the cerebellum, at the back of the brain, triggering an inflammatory reaction.

>>"In 1403 elderly women, the total volume of white matter—the insulated nerve fibers that connect different brain regions—decreased by about 6 cubic centimeters for every 3.5-µg/m3 increase in estimated PM2.5 exposure, based on air monitoring data from participants’ residences for 6 to 7 years before the brain scans were taken. Chen’s white matter findings are consistent with studies of cultured neurons, which show that exposure to PM2.5 can cause myelin—the fatty insulation that wraps around neuronal axons—to “peel up at the ends, like a Band-Aid,” Block says"

I mean, hell, even trees do increase the amount of certain types of "pollutants" in the air (pollen for one). They make the air less pure for one thing.

Lol this reminds me of the Demolition Ship Captain incident at AoKH where DSC hacked into Angel THS's account (and then ban half the active users on Age of Kings Heaven) by just creating a website where he could get Angel THS to use the same password he could use everywhere (HUNTER)

This is great. This has a chance of inspiring the next generation of people to eschew traditional routes. I'm sure she'll be super-successful/inspiring in whatever she does, even if she doesn't fulfill her original objectives (similarly with many of the Thiel Fellows).

While it's true that they benefit from connections (I've seen SO many smart students lose their lives away through K-12 public education, which wastes FAR more talent than any college/university education system - and connections help them get out of it), the fact is that the Internet is now making it easier for us to make connections with people (you can just email the right person who can pull the strings for you now). In fact, you could get connections simply by friending them on Facebook, and they, being entrepreneurs, are probably more likely than others to accept if they think you're interesting.

InquilineKea··on The disposable academic: Why doing a PhD is often a waste of time
And also, the variance in the amount of money undergrads make after 6 years, compared to the variance in the $ that PhDs make. Some undergrads could earn MUCH more money than PhDs, but it's also ENTIRELY possible that undergrads could fizzle out/make a major mistake and end up in a perpetual cycle of low-wage jobs (and this can happen to the highly intelligent too)
