Ingaz··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
Let me share my perspective on piracy as a citizen of Russian Federation who don't think about relocation.

I was a youtube/Spotify/last.fm/[smth other I don't remember] subscriber before 2022.

Actually it was kind of pride in younger population in Russia for games: "I pay for all games I like".

My son, my friends has hundreds of games bought on Steam.

That was a big step actually.

How sanctions worked?

For me: - youtube/youtube music - I was a subscriber, so it was for me: "No advertisments, ability to support channels, ability to listen youtube videos on locked phone". Now: no advertisements for all Russia - which is great. Not able to listen on locked phone - irritating. Support channels (I'm a WH40K fan) - thru direct donations

- spotify - I still think that last.fm was the best

- netflix, amazon, etc - sorry, I have no options, except eztv, kickass, piratebay, etc. Nothing new

My POV: Piracy is not a problem. Piracy is a solution. When everything else failed.

Ingaz··on Hacking Go's runtime with generics
You obviously don't hate go.

Everything you listed help programmer to keep own sanity.

It's all compromises but they're mostly reasonable compromises.

Ingaz··on Hacking Go's runtime with generics
C/C++/Rust - will not solve anything magically. Anyway you will need to implement some kind of memory management for DB.

Go GC creates problems and they are non-trivial (as all memory management) but it's not so twisted as in JVM.

Examples:

- DGraph: migrated from RocksDB (C++) to Badger (pure go, developed themselves, based on jemalloc)

- CocroachDB - pure go for storage engine

- go 1.20 proposed feature: package `arena` for region-based memory management

Hasura (https://github.com/hasura/graphql-engine) is quite big project. Although it should be less than 100K LOC.

It was only once when I saw problem that could be considered a bug.

What's wrong using pgbouncer? Today it's not rare to run http proxy in sidecars for every service.
Ingaz··on Practical Python Programming Course
Looks very good.

David Beazley never disappoints.

Ingaz··on Scrum has failed the developers
There was nothing wrong in SCRUM originally.

When it appeared it was a breath of fresh air: minimal, explainable in 5 minutes, just accumulation of common sense.

You don't even need to declare "We're working in SCRUM" - the important feature is possibility to do "SCRUM in stealth".

SCRUM went wrong when it became "process", when SCRUM masters/evangelists appeared. They started to teach "right SCRUM practices" and SCRUM became a bureaucratic ritual not distinguishable from RUP.

Varlam Shalamov is a master of short form, although IDK how well his stories translated.

About educational part: it's a frequent misconception. "Kolyma Tales" are not autobiography, it's a fiction.

E.g. His depiction of thieves wars reads as documentary but it's not. There is not a single personage that has direct match in reality. For some: it looks like combination of several real persons, some has no real analogues. The same with events, chronology and geography.

To write a documentary was never the goal for Shalamov.

And keep in mind that it's a perception of Shalamov who always was a man of weak health.

Dostoevsky was in similar or even harsher conditions but he found the strength to see in criminals around him not only infernal bad.

If you suppose that Dostoevsky is not relevant: there are other authors with similar experience.I

For example: Ahto Levi, Estonian, Hitlerjugend on start of WWII, conscripted in SS near end, after war - criminal, repeat offender, member of nationalistic gang -he's one of thieves that Shalamov depicts.

His "Notes by Gray Wolf" shows both degradation to beast and then return to human.

Ingaz··on MasterCard suspends all services in Russia
> does it mean local Russian cards will still work in Russia?

Yes. At least Tinkoff bank says so.

I'm more worried about GooglePay.

The only reason I did not bought Huawei last time was NFC+GooglePay.

SWIFT will disconnect in 12th of March banks from sanction list.

Not "any Russian bank". Of course it's possible that in future all Russian banks will be under sanctions.

Right now even bank transfers between Russia and Ukraine works fine. My ex-girlfriend still has a way to support her parents in Kyiv.

If you meant possibility of total blockade: it's probable.

Zelensky campaigns exactly for that.

At least his ideas more realistic than Macron voiced: to block bitcoins in Russia.

I heard that corpses of dead prisoners were thrown from train windows between stations.

It was even in TV Series .. I forgot title but that moment I remember very clear.

It was shocking. Unbelievable!

Ingaz··on Article by Vladimir Putin ”On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians“
Real historian Klim Zhukov made an analysis of this letter. It's on youtube but only in Russian.

From Zhukov's analysis most of historical facts are true but conclusions are wrong.

Nationalities are always changing, growing, evolving. If we look sufficiently far then Slavs and Germans should be counted as cousins

Ingaz··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
There are a lot of devices that supports both wired and wireless.

I think it's a correct direction.

I can use my keyboard during Linux installations in wired and in wireless mode I can switch between notebook and 2 Android devices with shortcut

Ingaz··on Don’t try to sanitize input, escape output (2020)
Article starts from "don't sanitize input" but in the middle :

> If you’re not using Markdown but want to let your users enter HTML directly, you only have the second option – you must filter using a whitelist.

So "don't filter but filter"

Ingaz··on Write shitty code
The valid point is: "Reconnect with the joy of creation"

Attempts to do everything absolutely correct are not productive on early stages.

So it's OK to write dirty during search for solution. Anyway it's my personal code on this stage.

But then comes time to publish code. I respect my colleagues, I can't make them read dirty code.

Ingaz··on Bitbucket passes one million users
In my experience it does not matter which tool is in hands of people who like to "tweak", "twist", "improve", etc.

I've seen trac with "features", now I see JIRA with "features".

JIRA itself is not bad as issue tracker. (Trac also is not bad)

Ingaz··on Bitcoins Are Digital Collectibles, Not Real Money
>>Comparing Bitcoin to a fiat currency like the dollar is a little like comparing the English language to TCP/IP.

Bitcoin could not be compared to currency.

It's comparable to gold, oil, diamonds, etc.

Ingaz··on Bitcoins Are Digital Collectibles, Not Real Money
Bitcoin was not money but a digital resource analogous to gold or oil by design.

I'm a little surprised that in 2013 somebody do not know this.

Ingaz··on IE10 for Windows 7 Globally Available
I'm looking now side by side Chrome, IE10, Firefox.

IE10 is doing something weird with fonts: everything is bolded and blurred.

When I switch to Compatibility view - it looks better less blurred but strange anyway.

Ingaz··on Ruby 2.0.0 Released
>>Say we can't find anywhere in Python where Objects don't exist.

You're correct - we can't find a place in Python where Objects don't exist. Python and Ruby are exactly same in this.

>>Then welcome on board of true OO. Now show OO some love and stop discouraging the using of classes.

What do you mean by true OO?

It does not matter if you "love" objects or not. You can't write in python without OO. Every python module is an object, defs and vars - members of object. (Even classes and other modules are members of module object).

"The same" means "ruby as pseudocode is the same as perl".

You need to explain that 0 is True.

You need to explain blocks, (int_number).times and other cute things.

And I heard a lot of complains for whitespace, but begin-end is more irritable for many.

Ingaz··on Ruby 2.0.0 Released
I think that ruby, perl, python and javascript are similar only in purely theoretical way.

Python - is "executable pseudoscript". It does not have ruby elegance, perl "worse is better", javascript ... minimalism(?)

I'm using python for prototyping. As communication tool.

I can describe all python scetches to every programmer, be it javer, c-sharper, C-developer or SQL-er.

Can I use perl/ruby/CSharp/Java/F#/Haskel?

Answer is NO.

Perl: sigils, regexp everywhere (when it not needed), parameters passing, "use strict", strange OOP - all those features makes it impossible for prototyping.

Ruby: it's the same as for perl. It looks more pleasant to eyes but it is no way "pseudocode" that everybody can read.

C#/Java - prototyping is a joke. And I can't use sharp-code for javer and otherway.

F# - F# is looking a lot like "pseudo-script". But the main strength - type system is not helping in prototyping.

LISPs - I think that LISPs are good for prototyping. The only problem - they are LISPs.

Ingaz··on Ten predictions (2004)
Yes.

But in fact: you add javascript - you have all strictness and structure of XML.

Ingaz··on Ten predictions (2004)
XML is not about "<" and ">" everywhere.

XML, JSON, MUMPS are semantically equivalent.

Ingaz··on Ten predictions (2004)
>> We got NoSQL (esp. JSON based ones) instead of XML. >Thank god we dodged that bullet. I'm just glad people see XML for what it really is (useful, but not that useful).

XML, JSON, MUMPS-storage are semantically equivalent.

XML is not about "<" and ">".

"Russian guy suffers the most"

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RussianGuySuffers...

Universe agrees with it: Tunguska and "УФО" are both in Russia.

I suppose that all other world can relax: something bad or REALLY BAD will go on head of "russkie"

(It was a joke)
