Infernal··on What happens when 10k AI agents are left to self-govern in a virtual world?

Infernal··on I forced every engineer to take sales calls and they rewrote our platform
I think the comment you're replying to agrees with you - it makes more sense with the last two quoted sentences swapped. I could be wrong but this interpretation seems consistent with the rest of the comment.

"Many software companies hire smart people as CPO, Product Director, or Head of Product because they have leadership skills, people skills, and some knowledge of the industry. Some companies go even further and promote an engineer with project management experience to Head of Product. But most have little to no background in business, marketing, economics, or product development."

Infernal··on Walkie-Textie Wireless Communicator
I have seen low power meshtastic devices serving things like BBSes on solar power, I’m not familiar enough with 802.11ah devices to know if solar would be feasible.
Infernal··on Walkie-Textie Wireless Communicator
Yes and yes. In the US, 900-930MHz (nominally the 915MHz band) is available for use with no license required so encryption is fine (similar to your 2.4GHz or 5GHz wifi access point).

People interested in LoRa may also be interested in 802.11ah, or Wifi HaLOW

Infernal··on The Art of Roland-Garros
Far from exhaustive, but this is one of the best collections of official F1 event posters I could find in one spot. Would love to see the whole library as well.

Infernal··on The average workday increased during the pandemic’s early weeks (2020)
I don't think it's a paradox at all. I saved X hours a day by not commuting, and spent maybe .25X to .5X extra hours working (which actually felt pleasant, because I was sleeping in later, getting "home from work" sooner, and taking zero-friction breaks when needed by walking to my kitchen instead of driving to lunch, etc.)
Infernal··on Finding Signal in the Noise: Machine Learning and the Markets (Jane Street)
And yet if there was so much gold dust lying on the sidewalk that you could pay 15 Harvard med surgeons enough to pick it up and still have some left over, would you just not?
Infernal··on Watchdog ponders why Apple doesn't apply its strict app tracking rules to itself
Replying to myself because I’m past the edit window - the trial I’m referring to was through a third party (Walmart) it sounds as if the terms vary on a case by case basis.
Infernal··on Watchdog ponders why Apple doesn't apply its strict app tracking rules to itself
I have not found this to be the case - just last week I signed up for a free 4 month trial of Apple Music and immediately (like, the next 30 seconds) canceled and retained my trial period. I have also done this with News and TV in the past.
Infernal··on From Pegasus to Predator – The evolution of commercial spyware on iOS [video]
“M1 Computers have built-in terrible spyware that cannot be removed (Apple made sure of this).”

Can you say more about this?

Infernal··on US could ban TP-Link routers over hacking fears: report
FWIW I thought my EdgeRouter X died a few years back, power light would blink but wouldn't boot up - turned out to be a dying wall wart. Swapped it out for one I had lying around that happened to match voltage/current/connector and that was maybe 3 years ago.
Infernal··on Car manufacturers break promise about sharing location data with police
I also have not done this myself but I see lots of folks asking for more info. Dug this up a while back when I was considering buying a Jeep (still am, haven't made a purchase yet)

Infernal··on The legal rule that computers are presumed to be operating correctly (2022) [pdf]
> The alternative would be to say that only a system that has been proven correct could be used as evidence which would force pretty much all accounting back to paper.

Assuming that the paper accounting could be proven correct, when the computerized accounting could not, your proposed alternative would seem to be an upgrade.

Infernal··on [dead]
The title does not seem to be supported by the article.

Title: “Fentanyl poisoning is the #1 killer for people ages 18-45”

TFA: “Drug Poisonings are a leading cause of death for Americans ages 18-45, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)… almost 70% of these deaths were caused by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.”

TIL that "Biro" is British English for "ballpoint pen".
Infernal··on The EPA wants total removal of lead pipes
If it’s a lead trap… wouldn’t that mean the water that comes out has less lead in it than the water that goes in? Assuming the water going into the heater is the same as the water coming out of your cold tap.
Infernal··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
I’ve got an 08 Fit as well, in 15 years and 150k miles I haven’t had to do anything outside of brakes/ignition coils/spark plugs. What sorts of things have gone wrong with yours?
Infernal··on The Best Timed Shot in TV History (Probably)
Can you help me understand why air is (relatively) more viscous the smaller you are? Does it have something to do with the volume (mass) of an object growing faster than the surface area available to support it in the air? Or is it something else?
Infernal··on The trouble with ingredients in sunscreens
The data in the article you linked doesn't agree with you - it says a base tan gives an SPF of 2, and gives the example that that means if you would normally burn in 10 minutes, it will now take 2x the time (20 minutes) to burn. Doubling the burn time is hardly "no protective effect".
Infernal··on Trying to make sense of why Otis exploded en route to Acapulco

Infernal··on ChatGPT’s system prompts
Similar story from a guy I knew in the military - deployed overseas, one of the guys in his unit was unhinged, weird, etc. Sounded kind of like a black sheep, but my friend always went out of his way to be nice to him. The other soldiers asked my friend "why are you so nice to so-and-so, he's so weird he's probably gonna shoot us all up one day" and my friend replied "exactly".
