IneffablePigeon··on Are electric cars that much cheaper to operate?
We are paying down the capex of installing chargers, grid connections, etc etc.

It will come down over time.

IneffablePigeon··on Ask HN: What commit message conventions do you follow?
Comments, reviews, screenshots, etc etc?
IneffablePigeon··on Farewell potholes? UK team invents self-healing road surface
Pretty bad for bikes though, and pushchairs.
IneffablePigeon··on List of 200 UK companies that moved to 4-day working week
There’s a mix of both approaches. I suspect most are the latter at least for customer facing roles.
IneffablePigeon··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
Not wanting to live in the United States, I would venture.
IneffablePigeon··on I got OpenTelemetry to work. But why was it so complicated?
Honeycomb. For shorter traces (most of them), a waterfall view is great. For those long ones, we try to split them up if it makes sense but you can also just run queries scoped to that trace to answer questions about it (how many of the spans are db queries, how many are this query, are they quick, etc etc)
IneffablePigeon··on I got OpenTelemetry to work. But why was it so complicated?
This is just not true. We have traces with hundreds of thousands of spans. Those are not very readable but that’s another problem.
IneffablePigeon··on Honeycrisp apples went from marvel to mediocre
Feels like a better solution is to buy when it’s in season and find something else to enjoy at other times
IneffablePigeon··on Britain is building one of the world’s most expensive railways
Leisure is already more than half of the trips on UK rail. It’s mostly people living their lives. Reducing demand seems mostly a dead end to me except perhaps along very busy commuting corridors, of which there aren’t that many and of which demand is still high at weekends because work hubs also tend to be leisure hubs.
IneffablePigeon··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
One could say the same about a combustion engine, really. Battery packs last way, way longer than most people think because they analogise it to phone batteries which are quite different. The resale value of a degraded pack is also going to be higher than most people assume, I think. Unfortunately we have not had plentiful EVs with good battery packs for long enough to show this to the average consumer.
IneffablePigeon··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
The booster needs lift points anyway for manufacturing and moving it to the launch mount. You can’t engineer those out, really.
IneffablePigeon··on We're excited about our new roundabout
In Cambridge we have recently had both our first Dutch roundabout and our first few Cyclops [0] junctions and I have to say I actually prefer the cyclops. Yes, you lose momentum if you want to turn and the throughput doesn’t match a roundabout but you can use it as a normal cross roads if you want or use the protected turn with lights around the ring without worrying about whether cars have actually seen you and understood that it’s your right of way. My opinion might change if I lived somewhere where people were used to Dutch roundabouts.

IneffablePigeon··on Galaxy Buds reportedly exploded in a user's ear causing permanent hearing loss
Wireless buds also don’t pull out of my ears when the wire gets caught, or need replacing when the moving parts wear down (I’ve had my current earbuds for several years, I can’t remember ever having wired headphones that lasted more than one)

I agree we should still have the option of either more easily but I’d still be picking the wireless ones to be honest.

IneffablePigeon··on Visit Bletchley Park
I’m not sure I’d bet much on that “before” long part. At least not as far as Cambridge, the other end seems more certain.
IneffablePigeon··on We need to liberate the Postcode Address File
What nonsense. Are you worried about physical spam mail? That ship has already sailed. I genuinely can’t think of any other abuse vector for a dataset like this.
IneffablePigeon··on Games People Play with Cash Flow (2020)
Yes. What you ask is just as important as whether you’re talking to your customers. The Mom Test is the best book on this.
IneffablePigeon··on Every company should be owned by its employees
> they tend to make decisions that maximize worker welfare rather than profit

Oh no

IneffablePigeon··on Nevada’s public employee pension fund invests passively and beats peers (2016)
Owning a lot of stock in the company you work for is another good reason not to concentrate more of your portfolio in the same industry.
IneffablePigeon··on Ask HN: How do browsers isolate internal audio from microphone input?
Live video or audio chat is basically the only time you do want this. Granted, that’s a big chunk of microphone usage in practice, but any time you are doing higher fidelity audio recording and you have set up the inputs accordingly you absolutely do not want the artefacts introduced by this cancellation. DAWs, audio calibration, and even live audio when you’ve ensured the output cannot impact the recording all would want it switched off.

Default on vs default off is really just an implementation detail of the API though, as you say.

IneffablePigeon··on Welsh government commits to making lying in politics illegal
Is it not already illegal to deliberately mislead a courtroom? Many of the same concerns apply, and yet thankfully the solution is not generally to throw our hands in the air and say it’s impossible to deal with the nuance.
IneffablePigeon··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
I think electric cars could change this equation. The savings are high enough and the inconvenience low enough.
IneffablePigeon··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
With heat pumps (like AC) and condensing boilers, it is often more efficient to run for longer and slower as long as that makes your appliance run more efficiently (lower flow temperatures for heating, higher for cooling). Requires the system to support modulation though.
IneffablePigeon··on The regenerative urban garden I: No-till gardening
It’s often better not to compost under a new plant because it encourages it not to spread its roots. Instead mulch with it and the rain and worms will bring the nutrients down.
IneffablePigeon··on Electric Cars Are Suddenly Becoming Affordable
I own an electric car and no home charger. I charge at work, mostly. It works well for me. The solution will involve a range of options for a range of circumstances- what I do wouldn’t work for everyone but that’s ok.
IneffablePigeon··on Beach erosion will make Southern Cal. coastal living 5* more expensive by 2050
Not quite seaside -> inland, but the area around Ely is still called the Isle of Ely because Ely used to be an island surrounded by marshy fenland, often flooded by the wash from the North Sea. The fens were drained in the 17th century onwards with the help of some Dutch engineering and Ely is now just a hill.
IneffablePigeon··on Priced out of home ownership
My (UK) house is worth 3x the total rebuild value my mortgage provider wanted me to insure it for. This implies the land it’s built on (and the planning permission to build the house) is worth twice what the structure is worth.
IneffablePigeon··on Big data is dead (2023)
If you’re in b2b 5000 customers can be a lot more revenue than that. 10-100x, depending hugely on industry and product.
IneffablePigeon··on A Single Div
I would be surprised if any aren’t hand coded. You have to be extremely economical with shapes with this technique - generally (unless I’m out of date on css art techniques) you have your original element, a before and an after element, and an arbitrary number of box shadows of those elements which you can use to duplicate them in different colours and positions. So you have to pick 3 basic shapes to draw with. In some of these you can see that limited shape palette at play but some of them hide it very well.
IneffablePigeon··on Show HN: We relaunched the Official MTA App for NYC public transit
Me too - no experience of it in NYC but I swear by it in London and it’s also been fantastic in other European cities. Far more reliable and accurate than Google Maps.
IneffablePigeon··on Do we need to store all that telemetry?
> If your app is constrained by CPU or RAM, then the business metrics will reflect that, and then you can turn on collection of those metrics to identify the problem.

…but why incur that round trip on my feedback loop? Having those metrics on doesn’t cost me much.

This feels potentially like the perspective of a large organisation with both mature monitoring systems and quite steady state user base activity (through scale). When I have a customer who had an issue yesterday because they had an unusual workload that won’t be repeated often, I can’t afford not to have had the basic metrics turned on, in case they point us in the right direction.
