IndianAstronaut··on Saturn moon 'able to support life'
If life was not there, I would wager that life is exceedingly rare in our universe.
IndianAstronaut··on Cassini: Mission to Saturn: NASA's Cassini Mission Prepares for Grand Finale
Saturn's moons are much more likely to spread any contamination due to the presence of liquids. Liquid water on Enceldus and hydrocarbon lakes on Titan.
IndianAstronaut··on The tech industry has a problem with “bro culture”
Financial companies are also competing for tech talent. Anything that drives away top talent from tech companies is a win for financial ones.
IndianAstronaut··on Ask HN: Ever met a psychopathic CEO?
Not a CEO, but I am currently dealing with a very vindictive and petty VP. Absolutely no empathy or thought for others. Brings similar people on board her team and they run amock making the lives of their subordinates or others that deal with them miserable. The lower end managers are blatantly self centered, but the higher up you go, the shit just gets more polish. Capital One has been quite the nightmare.
IndianAstronaut··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2017)
Do you have a separate link or confact for HNers?
IndianAstronaut··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
Mexico could capitalize on this as well. Guadalajara is a mini tech hub.
IndianAstronaut··on R Passes SAS, but Python Leaves Them Both Behind
R's data analysis libraries are still far ahead of Python. Dplyr, Shiny, etc. So much stuff is still in built in R.

Places where I still use R is its easy to use statistical functions, handling large amounts of missing data, etc.

IndianAstronaut··on 12,000 startups are being created every day in China [video]
>commodiously embeds into Business Intelligence which creates an interurban transcendence

Wow.

IndianAstronaut··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
A better option would be to employ more people in the sciences. There is still a lot to be discovered and labs I have worked in have a range of work to be done from the low skilled cleaning glassware to high skilled design of experiments.
IndianAstronaut··on NASA proposes a magnetic shield to protect Mars' atmosphere
I am curious why we don't focus more efforts on Titan, which already has a thick nitrogen atmosphere.
IndianAstronaut··on What terrible treatment have you seen in the workplace?
Sure. Basically started off there working with analysis teams. You will be working with some very old school managers who follow a strict hierarchy. Things may seem golden for a couple months, but then the threats and intimidation go into full gear. I was told that I would be held liable for failures even though my manager was making the decisions which were resulting in failures. I was told multiple times that if a project was not done, I would be in big trouble.

If I spoke up about a new technology or method, I was told sarcastically that "oh you're so smart". I have been told that the work I am doing isn't rocket science.

Micromanagement has been the norm lots of digging into the details of the project by managers who don't even know the difference between Java and Javascript.

Nothing is in writing so managers frequently will bring up issues about things not getting done or taking a different direction. The politics are rotten.

IndianAstronaut··on What terrible treatment have you seen in the workplace?
I am experiencing this now at Capital One. Routinely berated, intimidated into better performance, arbitrary judgements, a lot of belittling(e.g. you're no rocket scientist), and threats (eg you are screwing your reviews, I will hold you liable, etc.).
IndianAstronaut··on Inside NASA’s Space Farming Labs
>The future is probably artificially produced food, like the porridge / sludge shown in the Matrix. Something out of a chemical process instead of a biological one.

I imagine we can synthesize relatively simple molecules such as glucose to supplement calories when needed by astronauts.

IndianAstronaut··on Inside NASA’s Space Farming Labs
Do you have a link to your 3D printed growth substrate or an info page?
IndianAstronaut··on Mathematicians becoming data scientists
Take a look into data engineering. A lot of data engineering jobs require you to implement mathematical models at scale.
IndianAstronaut··on [dead]
Title is very click-baity. The concept is nothing new, very similar to the idea of a 'promoter' in Net Promoter Score (NPS).
IndianAstronaut··on Ask HN: Is a Master's Degree in Bioinformatics a Foolish Idea?
I have a bench biology background. Have looked into bioinformatics as a career option before, but I just went the straight corporate route and got into a finance company as an analyst and then engineer. Just not enough good paying jobs to go around in bioinformatics.
IndianAstronaut··on Seven earth-sized planets discovered circling a star 39 light years from Earth
Considering the time scales involved, it wouldn't surprise me if multiple planets around nearby stars happened to be seeded with earth based bacterial/archaea life.
IndianAstronaut··on Most scientists 'can't replicate studies by their peers'
JOVE is really nice. My old lab posted some videos on there of how to for experiments. It is a huge step up from just reading methods and materials.
IndianAstronaut··on R for Excel Users
One of the best ways to get a good handle on basic R is to switch all the Excel stuff to R. Force yourself to use only R and you will find that you have a really good grasp of the environment in a couple months.
IndianAstronaut··on Scientists make huge dataset of nearby stars available to public
I am curious as to what sorts of image processing and algorithms are used to analyze this data set. Anomaly detection in images? Classification of images based on known extrasolar planets?
IndianAstronaut··on Ask HN: Are there 'dumb' ways to make money as a developer in your spare time?
>Blog in a semi-professional way (requires passion/research)

What are some examples of this?

IndianAstronaut··on George Washington: A Descendant of Odin?
This is similar to the Almighty Johnsons storyline.
IndianAstronaut··on Are Chinese and Russian Developers More Skilled Than Americans?
I agree. For me I have seen far more gain from learning a new tool, figuring out corner cases in my code, or coming up with miltiple ways of tackling code infrastructure issues rather than doing puzzles.
IndianAstronaut··on Goldman Sachs automated trading replaces 600 traders with 200 engineers
>Human augmentation is probably better?

Most of the automation work I do in financial services is a 90% automation. This leaves room for more analytical tasks where people can free up time to drive more business decisions and insights.

IndianAstronaut··on Not Everyone in Tech Cheers the H-1B Visa Program
>Tech is basically the most overpaid career there is.

I think we get paid what a middle class wage should be. There was a huge downward spiral in wages due to rapid economic changes that cause a large fraction of the workforce to make very substandard wages.

IndianAstronaut··on Network programming with Go (2012)
Go is also a fair bit easier to get newcomers up to speed on.
IndianAstronaut··on Million requests per second with Python
This is also why I am looking into more analytics work in Go. Uniformity of performance across different data analysis processes.
IndianAstronaut··on Unlearning descriptive statistics
My statistics professor once told us that statistics are a shadow of the truth, not the actual truth itself.
IndianAstronaut··on Employees are happier when led by people with deep expertise
One of the VPs at my prevoous companies used to sit in on our quarterly hackathons and build something. Made him a fantastic and well regarded engineering manager.
