Ijumfs··on Amazon met with startups about investing, then launched competing products
Isn't it more like the mall owner opening a clone of your store right next to yours while charging themselves no rent in order to gain an advantage, all the while promoting their own store they opened to steal your business on the ad boards situated around the mall?
Ijumfs··on Online classes are not worth cost of full tuition
I just have to say, that web site has some of the most offensive features. In-article tables of links to other stories, ads up the wazoo, a huge sort of task bar thing that swoops down. What are they thinking? I didn't even read the article. I don't have TIME for sites like that any more.
Ijumfs··on How and why I attempt to use Links as main browser
Compile your own emacs for your particular processor using all the available optimizations and you might be running much faster than your OS's emacs. You can also opt for other speedups and enhancements which you won't find in the normal generic emacs.

It's even possible that if you're on an old netbook, your emacs is using optimizations which don't exist on your machine causing all kinds of extra processing. Who knows. I also don't use GTK at all, this is a massive speed-up.

Ijumfs··on A linguistic glitch tricks us into thinking bank deposits are deposited in banks
It's not a linguistic trick. It used to be that banks had to keep a certain percentage of they money they had on deposit on the premises. Slowly, this amount (the "reserve rate) was lowered to 0% under Obama.
Ijumfs··on How and why I attempt to use Links as main browser
I use eww in emacs for a lot of browsing. It copes extremely well with the modern web.
Ijumfs··on Highly automated digital audio workstation extensible in Guile
The sheer pervasiveness across all platforms with unified messaging indicates faux grassroots shillops. Super easy to spot these days. Over-shilling broke the reputation management industry.
Ijumfs··on Highly automated digital audio workstation extensible in Guile
IBM / Redhat reputation managers want you on systemd + gnome + wayland. Their natterings reach all corners of the Internet. It's concerted, shameless, and it's really starting to get irritating.
Ijumfs··on Microsoft Analyzed Data on Its Newly Remote Workforce
Many companies are now shifting to full time remote work. The new normal is the new normal, things may never go back to the way they were. And companies might be able to save a lot of money on office space as well. I know in Seattle and Portland, there are quite a few firms who are allowing remote work because of issues of safety as well, chaos and disorder combined with a pandemic creates a new set of challenges we've never had to deal with before in concert.
Ijumfs··on NewPipe – ad-free, open-source Android YouTube client
It would solve all of them, because people would control their own video. Unless you're defining the "problem" Youtube solves as "Google gets revenue and then shares it back to some degree."

If Pewdiepie switched to Peertube, that would be a problem for Google. But probably not for Felix.

Ijumfs··on NewPipe – ad-free, open-source Android YouTube client
Many people are trying to move away from Google and Youtube, the cross-device and cross-network tracking which this allows being deemed detrimental by more and more people.

There is also Bitchute and Hooktube, if you want to get at Youtube videos without using Google more than absolutely necessary.

Ijumfs··on Amazon “Brushing” Scam
Not sure this makes sense because how in the world can the "seller" post a fake review under my account?
Ijumfs··on How to Gradually Exit Twitter
When I left Twitter a couple years ago, I "slammed the door on my way out" by deleting all my posts. Of course, we all know social media companies keep deleted posts and metadata but crawlers probably can't see this data (unless they pay?) and it sends a message as well.
Ijumfs··on Amazon’s UK FBA operations will be split from the EU
Hard Brexit was what people elected the current government to do after the previous one dragged feet on soft Brexit for years.
Ijumfs··on EFF Database of Police Agencies and Tech Tools They Use to Spy on Communities
Ironically they don't allow you to access the Atlas Of Surveillance using the Tor browser, lol.
Ijumfs··on Global brands employ Uyghur Muslims as ‘forced labour’
Yes, western or more correctly, international companies are keen to take advantage of slave labor even in 2020, this isn't even slightly controversial.
Ijumfs··on Building Elixir from source segfaults on macOS on Apple Silicon while compiling
>a new architecture has some bugs OR >turns out the person compiled the thing with BSD make instead of gmake
Ijumfs··on Apple Silicon: The Passing of Wintel
Are there any actually profitable social media companies?
Ijumfs··on Decentraleyes – Local CDN Emulation
We should all be turning off web fonts anyway.
Ijumfs··on Facebook takes down accounts and pages of Roger Stone
Don't know why you were downvoted, this is true and it's already happening.
Ijumfs··on UASP makes Raspberry Pi 4 disk IO 50% faster
The Pi 4 is a big revolution, fast enough to serve as a desktop computer for most office people, students, and so on. It's pretty impressive and more attention is being paid to it as a first-class computing platform as time goes on.

Our desktop monoculture has led to serious security problems and massive stagnation at least until recently. Even if you don't use a Pi you should be thankful that they exist.

Ijumfs··on UBC quietly changes references to Taiwan amid sensitive political climate
What's Taiwan? I heard a younger person ask this recently. The One China Policy is going along extremely well when American youngsters never heard of Taiwan.
