I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: At what speed would we have attained the Lightspeed of Internet Speed
To further elaborate, there's always going to be flows that require large units. Like a link between EU and the US.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: At what speed would we have attained the Lightspeed of Internet Speed
I think you are mixing up throughput with latency. Can you confirm that you're not?
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: How fast did you pay off mortgage?
There's still better options. You can get a low interest loan against your portfolio. That way, your portfolio is accumulating interest faster than the loan rate. At Merrill Lynch, this is called a LMA, loan management account[1].

I'm not rich, so I'm not sure what other options the wealthy have.

There's also a sparkfun dev board linked from that page which is around $150. It mentions that if ordering less than 25
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: Anyone ever get rejection letters from companies they didn't apply to?
I have a pretty unique last name, and it was sent to last_name@gmail.com and the greenhouse email only had my first name in it so I don't know what other information was submitted.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: How to Become a “Senior” Developer
I think the best way is to work at a growing company and show leadership and growth potential. Start completing projects on time and you'll probably get promoted or tasked with additional sr level responsibilities.

If you don't get promoted, you at least have some talking points when leaving at your next interview which can place you in that seniority bracket.

I_dev_outdoors··on Oracle lays off more than 200 California-based workers
what if they lay off another person, does the article need to be update then? There's some advantage in using approximate numbers.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: How do you effectively predict how long a task will take?
If it's not something you can scope out when the task is brought up, you can specify how much time it would take you to research it in more detail to get an estimate.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: What was your last “ah-ha!” moment?
unable to copy ATC instructions, unable to cross stuff off my in flight check list. I guess not screwed, but when task saturated, it wouldn't be good.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: What was your last “ah-ha!” moment?
I was taking flight lessons and dropped my pen under the rudder pedals. I had a pencil in my pocket and my flight instructor said he was impressed that I had a backup.

This kind of drove home that you need to be prepared for a lot of different outcomes because I would have been screwed if I was flying by myself and was unable to take notes.

I_dev_outdoors··on Why Don’t We Use Chemical Weapons Anymore?
If anyone wants to read more about this, there's a book called "the bomber mafia" that covers it in detail.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: What to Do with Lanyards from Conferences?
replace the lanyard of your work badge if you wear one and then throw the others away.
I_dev_outdoors··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
Good callout. Yeah, I should be referring to the electrical circuit as a 15A circuit and not that it's just a limitation of the breaker.

We have the original fabric sheathed wire as well in the walls still which needs to be replaced to modernize the electrical system.

I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: Why can't I find a remote job?
You haven't shared your resume, but your tone seems to suggest you might think it isn't the greatest. Have you tried different formats of resumes that maybe highlight some of the skills you have that are relevant to the positions or show off some of the projects you have done?

I'm not sure about how much experience you have since you only give your age, but if you are applying for senior remote positions, do they spotlight the skills that a senior engineer has?

Independentness, mentoring junior members, etc?

I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: How would you design a Modern Operating System in 2022?
This is possible with linux. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=342686

It gets kinda tricky with the windowing environments which don't really support this use case this well.

I_dev_outdoors··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
keep in mind that is not idle power consumption. If you are setting a limit like that it's because of heating or power constraints (battery? PSU?)
I_dev_outdoors··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
I think the issue is with older houses that might have 15 amp circuit breakers compared to the modern standard of 20A. One high end desktop computer by itself isn't likely to be a problem, but the way these houses are wired, there are a lot of outlets on the same breaker since they were mostly designed for lighting loads. Our 1950 house in MI will flip the breaker if we use the microwave, toser and bathroom vent at the same time, and my desktop is also on that circuit (with a UPS)
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest laptop I can buy for development
This is the same advice I'd give, but I'd also assume that the laptop is going to break within 2 years or so in a way that's worth just buying a new one (or another used one). Just an antidote, but that's about how long they last me.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: Why can't smart phone screens also be solar panels?
You don't really want your phone sitting in sunlight. The battery shouldn't be charged as it starts to heat up.

I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: Pitfalls in jumping ship to a client company?
I did this and it was the best thing I ever did for my career. The contracting company was kinda neglecting the contract and the company I moved over was fed up. The company ended up agreeing to end the contract in exchange for my non-compete to be nullified.

I_dev_outdoors··on How the US Postal Service reads terrible handwriting
I used to have a job doing this at a different REC in the mid 2000s and we had terminals that I think were connected to some mainframe system.

The keyboard layout was custom for the application like they show in the video. The software would expect numbers at certain times, so you'd just type numbers using the home row and it'd switch back over the alpha chars after you input the correct number of number chars.

I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: How do I force network failures during development against remote APIs?
I found https://badssl.com/ which at least helps me with the SSL cert issues, but I would still love to hear any other good solutions for testing other types of networking errors.
I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: What are the largest static sites you know of?
there's standardized tooling you can use to do this from git, or you can just use `hugo deploy` from your workstation.

At the "largest" level, you should accept 1-2 hours of minor setup/fiddling at least.

I_dev_outdoors··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
That's just a demo if you aren't actually setting it up with their data.
