In all seriousness, I really enjoyed the sudo replacement post. It was fun to read
'Federation' or decentralization is a fantastic idea. There is really only one way that it truly 'works' as a decentralized service...
Each and every user runs their own instance of a federated server. This way, they can 'defederate' anything they please, without affecting the whole. This way there is still no 'central' service that can be monetized, locked down, etc. and all of the federated data is available to all private instances, akin to BitTorrent or a (and I shudder typing this) blockchain.
Maybe I'm wrong.
What if the random one I pick gets defederated? Now I need to find a new instance and make a new account?
This will make federated services into even MORE echo chamber ultra-moderated spaces than Reddit ever was, as the fear of defederation will cause lockdown policing of wrongthink.
I honestly think it may be worse for free speech.
Then again, I’ve never joined a federated service and I have no actual anecdote or evidence to back myself up, I’m kind of just spitballing thoughts.
Once everything was 'discovered' and conglomerated into wikipedia and YouTube, there was no content left for National Geographic. They started writing articles about science news, no different than Popular Science magazine. Then the political era started, and every issue was polarizingly politicized.
I have had a subscription for decades, and I can honestly say I stopped even opening the magazine years ago. The kids just cut pictures out of it for art projects.
Searching discord is painful, and god forbid you ask a question that someone else asked 3 weeks ago that you weren’t sitting in front of the chat for.
The only discord that kind of makes sense (that I’ve used, and I haven’t used many) is the doom eMacs discord, where the questions are kind of pinned. Almost in a Forum format.
I wish Discourse would take off more. I think it’s a great, modern answer to forums.
This is less about ad revenue than it is jealousy over closed communities like Instagram and tiktok where you are locked into their app.
