Hithredin··on Judge in Fortnite case holds Tim Cook's feet to the fire
This dicussion is missing the main advantage of an app store in iOS vs customer platform locking

If you buy an app on iOS in a store present in both platform you can just switch OS with all your app.

Hithredin··on 1 in 5 electric vehicle owners in California switched back to gas
Thanks for the link that's a good case study. However that was a bit early compared to the actual market.

Wondering if a brand of petrol stations could disrupt the market by suddenly introducing this. Without an existing network by the roads or a very large investment, it must be very hard to penetrate the market.

Hithredin··on 1 in 5 electric vehicle owners in California switched back to gas
The ancien origin form of "petrol station" was a post office where riders could swap horse.

Would it be so difficult to establish a standard to achieve a similar thing? - stop at a station - swap the battery - go

Even faster in theory than gas...

Hithredin··on Maslow's Pyramid of Code Review (2015)
Shouldn't the pyramid be reversed? Surely "readable" come first, then you can review the correctness
Hithredin··on Scientists talked to people in their lucid dreams
I guess one key part is the need of a regular long night sleep.

With short sleep, one sleep to deep for that.

Hithredin··on News site Stuff left Facebook – traffic is just fine and trust is higher
Though calling Stuff "journalism" is not just a bit exaggerated. Their Facebook campaign was based on hate and division to trigger reaction and view.
Hithredin··on Activists turn facial recognition tools against the police
Funny enough, this is the exact same argument we use against state mass surveillance:

" If you have nothing to hide, why refusing surveillance?"

So police should be exempted from mass surveillance ban ?!?

Hithredin··on What's it like to be an Octopus? (2017)
However the apex predator negative side can be compensated. Human are pretty weak, but still our species made it, certainly thanks to social behaviour

Hithredin··on Florida becomes first state to enact DNA privacy law, blocking insurers
Great decision! What is the point of insurance if they can predict your health issues.
Hithredin··on NBA's China dilemma: $4B at risk as Chinese TV cancels game broadcasts
Because HN has generally smart and well thought comnents except when it come to china. Not sure why.

Hithredin··on France has approved a digital services tax despite threats of retaliation by US
They are talking about physical shops. Which are also competitors of Amazon. And where does your assessment comes from? Just guess?
Hithredin··on 60 days in jail for not paying a $2.75 subway fare costs the city $22,000
Or just make public transportation free... How much does all the payment system cost anyway? Controls, fines, machines, offices, softwares, time lost to force people to pay while entering...
Hithredin··on Chinese New Year Is World’s Biggest Human Migration
Haters everywhere. Hong Kong is not really the best place for peace and quiet. Like... really
Hithredin··on One of the Biggest At-Home DNA Testing Companies Is Working with the FBI
> > Riding on the misinformation of life insurance company is not a solution either

But this is the very and only concept of insurance: misinformation on misfortune...

Hithredin··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is CSS too damn hard?
I experience the same than the author. But I have absolutely not the same problem with a declarative language such as QML, Cascade, Android xml, Jboss rules engines, etc...

I don't think it is caused by this aspect of CSS.

The problem could come from the fact that it mixes 2 purposes: style AND layout to apply it globally with rules that get harder to understand the bigger the project.

Hithredin··on Are We in the Middle of a Programming Bubble?
About the last sentence: If only we will still need developers in the coming 10 to 20 years... I hardly see how 'AI' (note the quotes) could not replace them.
