Hextinium··on Aluminum formate Al(HCOO)3: Earth-abundant, scalable, & material for CO2 capture
This is actually the logic for just burying plastic: it doesn't degrade on any important timescale. Acts as a carbon sink, and keeps it out of everything. Winning all around.
Hextinium··on Moon Disaster
The problem arises where an account gets verified as one thing and then changes to become another, this happens all the time with trolls who can make/buy/extort verified accounts.

They then spoof being the real person, and verification then means absolutely nothing cause they are functionally identical to a bypasser.

By having verification be really hard to get, trolls have a lot harder time getting accounts and the problem is smaller in scope.

Hextinium··on Emulating double precision on the GPU to render large worlds
My naive guess is that most floating point code uses FP32 and FP64 uses at least double the die size. So optimize for FP32 and have some FP64 for the rare equations that need it.
Hextinium··on Mud boosts the immune system
I think the previous comment was referring to that the people with weak immune systems/severe allergies don't make it to adulthood. And so of course in clean environments where they survive there is a higher population of people with allergies.
Hextinium··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
Risky Business posited last week on their podcast that since Operation Aurora[1], where China hacked a bunch of companies, Google has just pulled out their checkbook to ensure that it never happened again. And it seems like they have successfully done so.

Ninja edit: seems like dekhn just confirmed what I said above

Hextinium··on Citibank may lock bank accounts for 45 days if breach suspected
For small but significant amounts (less than like 10k) it is significantly simpler to just get a bankers check for moving money between accounts between banks. Walk into one branch, get a check, go to the other branch, money moved! Definitely not ideal if you are doing it frequently but if you are closing an account it's very simple.
Hextinium··on The most-regretted (and lowest-paying) college majors
In junior year of HS (US) my teachers forced us to sit down and actually write out a budget for our expected wages and then run some years of expenses month by month. That was very eye opening and I think would still be relevant in 8 years.
Hextinium··on A simple way to significantly increase lifetimes of fuel cells and other devices
The paper mentioned in the article: https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2022/ee/d1ee0...
Hextinium··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
Anecdote time: I currently live in Texas, the closest grocery store is a hour walk. While living in Colorado it was a hour and a half, and in Florida it was 2 hours, all of these where easy 5 minute trips by a car and an excursion by foot.
Hextinium··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
Internet English has different "regional variety" than real life, for example I have litterally never heard "grok" in real life but I read it here fairly often.
Hextinium··on SpaceX, T-Mobile to connect satellites to cellphones in remote areas
This [1] may help but I'm wholely unfamiliar with the field. A guy at Defcon did a talk about how HAM radio in Florida allocates their bandwidth and goes into the nitty details of propegation.

Hextinium··on American Seating’s original and largest market was school furniture
The school I help at has these metal chairs with plastic inserts for the final inch of the leg. One leg will regularly snap off enough that they cut the rest of them off at the wood shop and put them back in the classroom, it's kinda funny seeing like half the chairs being a inch too short.
Hextinium··on Observations on 6 Years of Journaling
Oh that actually makes a lot of sense, I guess I just couldn't understand that out of context.
Hextinium··on Observations on 6 Years of Journaling
I do a similar thing, just listing off the date and time and just kinda writing whatever comes to mind.

If I may ask what does the 1326 come from? It's like a year but I cant recognize the system.

Hextinium··on The Celera 500L passenger plane gets hydrogen powertrain
Would be interesting to make "virtual windows" where you take a camera on the hull and just stream its feed to like the in-flight entertainment system or a wall mounted monitor.
Hextinium··on U.S. task force recommending anxiety screening in kids 8 and older
(I mentor highschool students)

I have seen it a lot more of "why even try because our quality of life is going into the toilet" and less of "we are all going to die"

Hextinium··on The problem with hard and soft skills
This sounds like skill stacking which you summarized very well. I'll just leave some links to what relates to skill stacking which I found interesting

Hextinium··on What Ever Happened to Scandium Bike Frames? (2016)
This seemed like marketing speak to me so I went looking for research on it. I found something which was interesting:

For instance, the addition of Sc and Zr to 6061 alloy shows a slower ageing response at 190 °C, resulting in lower yield strength of 321 MPa (aged for 5 h) than base 6061 alloys (350 MPa) [64]. On prolonged ageing (36 h), a significant drop (~ 19%) in the yield strength of 6061 alloys was reported compared to only a ~ 6% drop in ScZr-modified 6061 alloys. [1]

I wonder if I am reading this right or if 6061 is actually not very alloyable with scandium.

Hextinium··on Kosmos 482: questions around a failed 1972 Venera lander still orbiting Earth
The tritium interacts with a phosphor through beta decay, so presumably if you hung a watch near it the phosphor would glow brighter with higher concentration of beta decay. Basically a sort of visual Geiger counter.
Hextinium··on Choose your status game wisely
As someone who has been trying to convince hiring managers of this very thing (dual major in electrical and mechanical engineering) it's harder than it sounds to find a job that crosses the bridges. Just my two cents.
Hextinium··on Show HN: I Designed and Built an eBike
Looks like they are router'ed, which while technically being a CNC machine is usually a order of magnitude cheaper than a CNC lathe or mill.
Hextinium··on Show HN: I Designed and Built an eBike
They probably don't have access to a welder and so they can't weld. It looks like they have a router table and a sheet metal bender so that's what they used to make it.
Hextinium··on America's Favorite Pickup Truck Goes Electric
I would love to not have to put a generator in my truck and just run stuff off the battery. It wouldn't replace it in all circumstances, but I would switch from always lugging around a generator to pulling it out when I need it.
Hextinium··on Tepco slow to respond to growing crisis at Fukushima plant
These fuel claddings already exist in the form of TRISO fuel for pebble bed reactors which are the next reactor generation. They should be able to contain reactor meltdown products on their own preventing the nuclear lava of Chernobyl and simplifying fuel handling.
Hextinium··on We need your beginner’s mind
The one that comes to mind for me is Tenga Topa Guerren Lagan, but most shonen shows have a plot arc of getting defeated and coming back at some point. The other one is Steins;Gate but that one is deep into the show.
Hextinium··on Webb placed on top of Ariane 5
Hubble took ~12 years from initial funding to launch with the challenger disaster postponing it 4 years out of that. Additionally if the decision was made to use traditional mirror techniques the Hubble was predicted to launch in 5 years already, instead of the difficulty they found with the alternative method but they didn't know that at the outset.
Hextinium··on People mistake the internet’s knowledge for their own
I feel like there is a inflection point of having the time to be able to study a new language vs just brute forcing your way through with SO. If you know you will be using python for long enough then it would be worth reading the docs, else just SO all the way.
Hextinium··on Jam 80 Cores, 768GB of RAM into E-ATX Case with This Tiny Board
All if the text of English Wikipedia is only ~12 Gb last time I checked a year or so ago. English Wikipedia with pictures is 10+ Tb, but your point stands about memory needed.
Hextinium··on How we built an auto-scalable Minecraft server for 1000+ players
Something wierd about a vanilla minecraft server is that sometimes less RAM is better. If you are using a good enough cpu going from 4 gb allocated to 2 gb allocated massively increases performance for low numbers of users because garbage collection runs more efficiently. You can tune the garbage collection manually, but super counterintuitively this fixed most of my problems.
Hextinium··on Suez Canal says traffic in channel resumes after stranded ship refloated
An engineer designs right to failure, and then multiplies the numbers required till he feels safe.
