Time enough, at last!!! (not my real name)

Many-many-many times, I want to respond to a comment - I write up an answer.. most times it ends up being a LONG response (i.e. 500-1000 words). I leave the tab open. I re-read it and edit it, I do this a couple of times. When I have written up a 'good enough response', I close the tab and never post the response. I do this so I don't waste people's time with long responses, while giving me the time to think, rethink, read more about the topic, learn from the other responses, and the extra reading I've done. I blame Lex Fridman (and his darn questions) for this!! :)

(but sometimes.. sometimes.. I do hit the 'reply' button)

Hmm.. I see.. 24/2/2017, and today it's 23/2/2025.. 8 years..

(fun fact - the very day I added a (not-my-main) gmail in the email form, someone tried to 'get in', used recovery, etc. So.. "admins see your email below".. is a joke, and a bad one)

HenryBemis··on Googler... ex-Googler
> I really was just a fuckin cog in a mega corp.

Sorry to hear. Yups you are/were/will be. It happened before. It will happen again. Perhaps not to you, but to me, him (pointing left), her (pointing right).

Save as much as you can. Invest as much as you can. "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."

I don't seem to sound like an asshole. For the past couple of decades "your services are no longer required - please return your laptop" happens on a monthly basis. If you follow the news (and I believe all of us here do), every now and then we read about Company XYZ laying off 3000. Company ABC laying off 5000. So, it's just a roulette and it has to do where the ball will sit. It's not personal (in 99.9% of the cases).

I had the 'pleasure' a few years back to work for a global bank and I was asked on a quarterly basis to give names of who will be gone on the next round(s). Nothing personal. Simple arithmetic.

So.. save, invest, keep emergency fund(s), and you will be ok.

> The market constantly adjusts to keep the average disposable income to zero.

Oh yes!! This very thing!! A quick DDG search didn't return anything, but yes, 300% yes. This is the rule/law. Once people get some money, forces tend to (try and) take it away.

EDIT: Ideally, your disposable income must be a little less than zero, so your needs/wants outpace your income, so you get a credit card with $2k limit, then you expand that to $5k limit, and that to $7k limit, until you cannot any more.

EDIT2: I once dated a lady (the most beautiful woman I've dated in my life) and she was in debt for €40k, ALL spent in clothes. She was SO gorgeous that when I feel for her she was wearing a €50 jeans and a €10 white tshirt. She walked in to the room and people stopped breathing. After 1.5 years of dating when I wanted to get very serious with her and she told me her 'dark secret', I suggested a Dave-Ramsey-baby-steps plan to pay off her €40k debt but to chop up her credit cards (and I would gladly generously contribute to pay off that debt - but with a different lifestyle). Long story short.. I haven't seen her in ~15 years :)

HenryBemis··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
Some people post in different timezones, so capture the attention of 'as many as possible', but you are likely correct as previous post was 22h ago (so almost same time yesterday), and not 4/8/12/16/20 hours ago.
HenryBemis··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
> Maybe they were also bots, spiraling endlessly into their algorithmically optimized oblivion?

As long as they got a timer, so the bots react "between 10 and 30 mins later" and they got a limit to "5 interactions per day", otherwise, if some-five coders forget those limits, and we end up having 5 bots interacting within a 1ms of the 'previous post', Reddit will run out of storage space :)

HenryBemis··on How a $2k 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured
> ‘Let's take an existing made-in-China product and then just produce the same thing in the US.’

This is what got me. I remember 40-50 years ago everything (or most) "made in the USA". And how "Chinese product" was an insult while "American product" was a badge of honour. Oh how the turnstable..

When I was studying in the UK the _most_ diligent students were the Chinese ones. First to come, last to leave, spent hours and hours on workshops, but they were not interested in staying in the UK to live/work there. As if they were on a mission. Go-Learn-Return-SpreadKnowledge. Many other nationalities were tempted by the mighty-GBP and stayed. But not the Chinese. Vast majority of them learned as much as they could and then went back home. That was mid-90s.

And those 20yo students of the mid-90s are 50yo with great studies and 30 years of experience, and there were thousands of them studying all over the UK, USA, and other countries. So there you have it..

I keep thinking of "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order by Ray Dalio" [0]. The game is almost over, time for the next cycle..

HenryBemis··on No Pay, No Work; Early Career Lessons
> maybe the 90s was a different time

Yes. There was a great need for anyone with IT knowledge, and the demand was far greater than the available labour.

I remember in 98 I got a job in a (financial) brokerage, and the required skills were:

  show up on time
don't leave before stock exchange closed
  wear a clean shirt
be a nice to customers (all were affluent)
know how to use conditional formatting in Excel
know how to connect a PC to multiple screens
know how to place different spreadsheets/windows in those different screens
I knew/could do 'more' than that but hey, money was OK, work was 15mins walking distance
HenryBemis··on Basic Income Pilot Project: Study results
It's not just that. I fear tha UBI will be 'frozen in time', so let's say it's something insanely generous, EUR 5000 per month. After that happens, every month we will have a record inflation, and soon enough the EUR 5000 will rent you Harry Potter's staircase-'flat' and 3 pizzas.

The only way I see this being sustainable is get as far as possible from the big cities, buy a tiny piece of land, by a durable tiny home, buy solar panels, get a tablet with all Gutenberg books, and find a soulmate that will follow you to that journey.

No kids, no private schools, no parties, no nothing. Everything will be swallowed by inflation.

HenryBemis··on Basic Income Pilot Project: Study results
The human nature. The moment UBI is set at X amount, the cheapest rents will jump, so will the price of a coffee, of a burger & fries in a fast-food, etc.

Greed will take over and try to get the _most_ out of the UBI as if we/you/they owe it to those people.

HenryBemis··on How the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg Got Added to the White House Signal Chat
(I assume/will try to interpret as...) Meaning that the role has some rules (written and unwritten). I can gossip about what went wrong at work today when out drinking with friends without breaking any laws/contracts, or I can just shut up and not gossip/brag that "today we killed 100 people", especially when celebrating the death of people.
HenryBemis··on How the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg Got Added to the White House Signal Chat
A very friend of mine was going through a nasty divorce. Although we weren't talking about the divorce/case he set our messages on auto-delete. Apparently his (now, ex-wife) had SMS and WhatsApp messages in court to be used for her cased.

Any 'loving message' to her from the early days ("you are so perfect") and any 'nasty message' to others ("oh that bitch!!") sent to anyone was presented in court. So for caution he auto-deleted even the messages that were innocuous, just in case it could be used against him "oh he wanted to spend money for a new phone/laptop, thus he has money, thus I will take it"

HenryBemis··on How the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg Got Added to the White House Signal Chat
Because now _this_ party is in power and controls the systems and information, but in 4/8/12 years _that_ party will be in power and a good-willing-mistake-making-bureaucrat may leak these 'by accident/mistake/etc' if they are properly recorded on a gov-controlled system.

But the auto-delete-after-1-week messages from Signal would never be recovered (unless someone is logging all that data and in the future will be able to crack it).

I feel that there a few people (wielding extreme power) in this world that are/were cancer for humanity. Hitler (obviously), Stalin (obviously), Mao (obviously). Two more that don't have blood on their hands (debatable for Zuckerberg - Myanmar) but have messed up plenty of lives are Zuckerberg (already done - through action, inaction, and corruption) and now Altman (about to do - through action, and corruption).

Every time his name is in the new I 'like' him less and less.

I hope some 'wise king' will stop him, or at least slow him/them down until controls are in place. We cannot have a "move fast/break things" for _this_ newest technology.

I totally admire the 'setup' that US has, making it the 'best inventor' in the world (gathering talent, giving them the tools/funding/environment to thrive), but this reminds me the Hellhounds from Supernatural. We don't see them, but they are out to get us.

I foresee the future.. Altman will be on Joe Rogan in a couple of years from now stating how he was 'tricked' into making the mistake (a la Zuck), which caused upset, and havoc, and ....

As for Diana Papan.. I will go ahead an imagine that she secured the funding she needs for her next campaigns!! And so the lobbying (aka legal bribing/buying politicians) continues!!!

HenryBemis··on U.S. stock futures tumble indicating another plummet on Wall Street
Every crisis is a wealth redistribution. I'm a Dave Ramsey _and_ a Warren Buffett fan, so when my favourite shoes are half price, I run to buy them (Ramsey on stock exchange falling), and from Buffett: "the stock market is designed to transfer money from the active to the patient".

I think I get that DJT wants to do (I live in the EU so I didn't vote for neither). Stocks are going down? VOO/VOOG/etc. going down? Good! My (small) monthly investment will buy 'so much' more. And when 'that thing' rebounds then even better.

In cases like that I feel sorry for the people who have to 'close'/sell their assets because they want to buy a house (why do people put it in the markets if they want their money out in less than 1-2 years?), or are retiring (no need to sell everything, sell small and slowly - it will rebound) and drops like this, or the COVID-time drops mess their plans.

HenryBemis··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
I live in the EU. I have no idea about US hand-egg teams. As long as these are proper words (e.g. Bucks, Lions) and they are not "rizzz" (or whatever other moronic sound comes out of people with 45 IQ) then people will play the game.
HenryBemis··on A Man Out to Prove How Dumb AI Still Is
Let's all hope two things: 1) AGI is not near 2) Nobody ever allows it to have physical presence 2b) should that happen, expect the one idiot ask it to make "as many paperclips as possible" :)
HenryBemis··on A Man Out to Prove How Dumb AI Still Is

1a) it's not AI, it's LLM. The companies who create/train/operate them may (wink-wink) pitch them as "AI" with half-truths, but we (here) know it's LLMs "all the way down"
1b) just like I disliked the "autopilot" in Teslas because it was never autopilot.
  2) I know that I wanted to write some software tools, and I have been successful at this for the past many months, and I got top-shelve tools, that work, do their tasks, send alerts, etc. etc. And I am not the only one. So if the purpose is to "show it's a stupid AI".. well.. it's not AI.. so yeah. If the purpose is "it is not perfect", yes, because it draws a hand with 10 fingers. What else is new?
LLMs are a tool, still under development, still early in the curve, they can do A-B-C well but not X-Y-Z well (or at all). Congratulations :)

But but but.. sir.. he went to Joe Rogan.. he had a live chat with Musk and 350m live watchers (I think _that_ was the day that Trump decided to make Musk his wing-man.. an audience of 350m live watchers is a staggering number!)

Keeping it impersonal (and only understanding/analyzing "how" the elections were won/lost), I think that "Trump didn't win". Instead "Democrats lost", took a risky bet and to quote the meme "the risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math". [0]

EDIT: I think it was Bill Burr that said on his (latest) SNL monologue "you would think that after the assassination attempt they would just give it to him" (because yes, that was a critical security failure, and so badly designed (the "security" of the event") that one could easily be tricked into thinking that it was purposeful)(a proper Hanlon's razor)

HenryBemis··on Why does Britain feel so poor?
The number 1 (and super easy to debunk) BS narrative that the English (mainly) say on the topic of "we never stole from others" or "it was a trade-off for modernizing them", etc. is how about you give back _all_ the things you 'didn't steal'. All Gemstones from all crowns/staves/etc, everything in the "British" (cough-stolen-cough) Museum. And _then_ your argument will have half a leg to stand on.

So until you return what is stolen from every country around the planet, keep the BS to yourselves because it only angers the rest of us, you pathetic thieves. Totally deserving what is going on in the UK. And I fear it is too late to turn that ship around in the next couple of decades. Especially with the politicians that are running the show and the younger ones in the pipeline.

And it is a great pity because I have lived and worked in the UK and I loved the people and the place. But hold your tongues and stop biting your own tails (you snakes) and perhaps you will have a better life in 20-30 years. :)

HenryBemis··on Why does Britain feel so poor?
There are snakes. And there are vicious snakes. And then there is Boris Johnson.

It looks like (just like everywhere else in the world) the rich become waaaayy richer and the rest are taxed/inflated to death. It's not that a house that 'was priced' at GBO 200k is 20 years ago is worth GBP 1.5m. It's not that a house that is 20 years older than before has turned to gold and its value has grown. It is the constant devaluation of the GBP. Brexit simply accelerated an already bad situation. I still wait for Boris Johnson and his team to show us the GBP 350m per week to be redirected to the NHS.

I think that "you will own nothing and be happy" is happening in the UK already with below 35 to never own property (unless inherit it) and by then they have to sell it to have a 'modern' lifestyle.

HenryBemis··on When so much knowledge is produced every day, how do you keep up?
>..how do you keep up?

You/We don't. Simply not possible. The important (to you and your work) will show themselves. And/or limit what you spend your time with. Least amount of info/least amount of time (you also need time to 'digest' all that info and connect the dots).

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: For the privacy minded, How do you prepare for gadget Border Searches?
Buy a second hand phone just for the trip. Don't log-in into anything (an Android), and install no apps. Just remember your password. Once you get to the hotel go ahead and install whatever you need for your trip (navigation etc.) You can check most things via the phone's browser, your email through Firefox/webmail, etc. You can install signal and text to your 'other account' at you PC at home any photos/zips/etc. If you are really afraid, you can reset the phone before you get to the airport to leave. Your photos will be waiting for you on the Singal at your home.

I think that upon closer inspections the (current) technology cannot make 'perfect' fake photos, so for the time being, the historian of the future will have no issue to ask his/her AI: "is that picture of Henry Bemis, with Bruce Willis, Einstein, and Ayrton Senna having a beer real?" And the AI will say "mos-def-nope!"
HenryBemis··on Show HN: I made a little puzzle game about a rogue chess knight
I had a similar thought, randomly generated in 'strength'/points and positions. Pawns on first row are impossible, and last row turn to Queens (or whatever).

There must be a 'relative position' though in the mix of the algorithm, because on some levels the pieces are scattered in the four corners and some others they are on 'perfect-knight-stepping-sequence' so I could take 5-6 pieces in 5-6 moves and then exit.

> zero interest

this mean that you are losing anything between 1% and 10% of your money per year (aka inflation). I am not advocating for big banks (which had put food on my table for most of my life) but you only need a (zero-interest) checking account with a debit card for your spending money. Everything else (imho) is most beneficial if you keep them spread out/hidden away, and serving your other purposes (a balance of growth x availability x speed_of_withdrawing).

I remember watching this vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auzLhKvsxnQ) many years (it feels like it was way before the 6y YT says its age is). I do a combination of this video and the Dave Ramsey 'envelope system' (but with different banks and with different accounts). Now, she speaks about the "US way of life" but I like the principle/discipline of this.
