Time enough, at last!!! (not my real name)

Many-many-many times, I want to respond to a comment - I write up an answer.. most times it ends up being a LONG response (i.e. 500-1000 words). I leave the tab open. I re-read it and edit it, I do this a couple of times. When I have written up a 'good enough response', I close the tab and never post the response. I do this so I don't waste people's time with long responses, while giving me the time to think, rethink, read more about the topic, learn from the other responses, and the extra reading I've done. I blame Lex Fridman (and his darn questions) for this!! :)

(but sometimes.. sometimes.. I do hit the 'reply' button)

Hmm.. I see.. 24/2/2017, and today it's 23/2/2025.. 8 years..

(fun fact - the very day I added a (not-my-main) gmail in the email form, someone tried to 'get in', used recovery, etc. So.. "admins see your email below".. is a joke, and a bad one)

HenryBemis··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
I think someone can drive 80km/h on this one. Plus they should be super-slippery in rain, right?

I remember crossing Poland towards Lithuania some years back, and in some village 1h from the border had a 500m part with stones, and those stones used would force me to do 25-30km/h and not more, I feared that my tires would burst, also the noise was unbearable.

HenryBemis··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
I am thinking a Black Mirror-like scenario, that in the peak of the episode, someone's life is at risk, and they got the speed-limiter to 10km/h (due to past offenses) and the baddie can run fast, catch them, kill them. (kinda like 15MM or Nosedive but for driving speed)
HenryBemis··on Boxie – an always offline audio player for my 3 year old
Definitely NOT going to build that. I haven't touched a soldering iron in 30-35 years, and don't plan to do so again. Perhaps after retirement (and with some massive magnifying lens) I was thinking to buy and make some cool 'ready-to-built-kits' with silly stuff I don't really _need_.

But I do miss those days that I would blow a fuse because I made a mistake in the soldering.. heh.. good/fun days!

HenryBemis··on Show HN: I built SecretCrush AI – an AI chat companion app - entirely using AI
Are those numbers real? A quick browse and I see from 1.5m down to a few k.

I got the standard/boilerplate questions:

I wonder where does your traffic come from, like, which countries?
how to you monetize all that?
your GDPR page is laughable, did you run it by a Data Protection lawyer and they "OK-ed" it? You are wandering to the parts of sensitive information. You don't mention on you personal data processing what/how, what are your technical and organisational measures, and so much more...
GDPR (cont.) what do you do with the data you collect? writing "yeah bro we're OK with your data" (aka All processing has a legal basis) DO tell more about the 'processing'.
if someone sends you the GDPR nightmare letter they will wipe you clean..
Also, where are you (the company) based?
If you are in the US, are you in this [0] list?
Whose AI do you use? Who else gets the data that you collect?

HenryBemis··on We're building a dystopia just to make people click on ads [video]
Suggestion in case it helps:

step 1: install & use Firefox
step 2: install and use adblockers (multiple)(I got ublock origin, adblock plus, noscript, privacy badger, privacy possum)(nothing gets through!!)
step 3: install "Open in Reader View" addon (not affiliated in any way). With this, when I DDG-search for something, especially lyrics or something for which I am interested in only the text, I right-click and "open in reader view" so it does exactly that.
step 4: set the Reader View (F9) in FF, to the font size, color, etc.
and the your 'friend' will Google for: Metallica enter sandman lyrics, and just right-click and pick the "Open in reader view", and presto! new tab with just the lyrics

EDIT: tip: tell your 'friend' to search for Band Song_title AZLyrics (not affiliated) so the first hit will be from "AZLyrics.com" which will have a standard format (I always search for ".... azlyrics" instead of just "..lyrics")

HenryBemis··on We're building a dystopia just to make people click on ads [video]
Yes, plus I wonder how "responsibly" do people who replace their car oil, dispose the old oil. One of the reasons I don't do it myself, is.. 'what the hell do I do with the old oil?' I know someone that parks/aims right over a grill that is there for the rain water, and all the bad/old oil goes straight there. I ain't no angel, but that person is an absolute cunt.

So.. I really hope that the garages that throughout my car-ownership years do this, don't just flush them down the toilet, but do something proper about them.

HenryBemis··on Watching o3 guess a photo's location is surreal, dystopian and entertaining
Is it 'only' "aggregating details from twelve different man pages" or has it 'studied' (scraped) all (accessible) code in GitHub/GitLab/Stachexchange/etc. and any other publicly available coding repositories on the web (and for the case of MS the Git it owns)? Together with descriptions of what is right and what is wrong..

I use it for code, and I only do fine tuning. When I want something that is clearly never done before, I 'talk' to it and train it on which method to use, and for a human brain some suggestions/instructions are clearly obvious (use an Integer and not a Double, or use Color not Weight). So I do 'teach' it as well when I use it.

Now, I imagine that when 1 million people use LLMs to write code and fine tune it (the code), then we are inherently training the LLMs on how to write even better code.

So it's not just "..different man pages.." but "the finest coding brains (excluding mine) to tweak and train it".

HenryBemis··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
A "NOBUS" weapon. Any system (country/gov/para-...) needs the right 'tools' for people-manipulation and people-programming. And such weapons should not be allowed to be used against 'us'. Kinda like devices that must accept (and malfunction) but not cause interference.

So, for a "let people speak their mind - don't control information" the Trump side quickly goes to universities must teach only what 'WE' want, Wikipedia must mention only what 'WE' like. Hilarious if not pathetic and dangerous (very-very 1984-ish...)

Side-note: it has since amused me but apparently it's not often told/at all.. the absolute propaganda tool for Russia/Soviet was "Pravda" (the "Truth"). Imagine my amusement when Trump created "Truth Social". You can't make that shit up....

Now, as I've said before, I live in the EU and don't vote in the US, so you folks decide, and then we all get to 'share' the experience (since I do have some/plenty of SP500 and similar instruments).

HenryBemis··on Which IT certifications have the highest failure rate and why?
"Trick" to pass PMP with flying colors. Do the 35h training. Boring and uninteresting but I assume it's still mandatory.

Then read once cover-to-cover the PMBOK. You will be tired. Your eyes will hurt. You will rethink some/many choices of your life!
Then read a 'normal' study-book on PMP, I checked out a few but I ultimately picked from the "Head First" series. This was a fun read, made sense.
Then read once more cover-to-cover the PMBOK.
Then go and rock that test!
HenryBemis··on Which IT certifications have the highest failure rate and why?
Right now this is "3." on "ask" category.
HenryBemis··on How I Blog with Obsidian, Hugo, GitHub, and Cloudflare – Zero Cost, Fully Owned
The Hugo/GitHub combo has been around/mentioned for some years.. I thought of running a blog once (but then.. no) and this was the choice I would have made. But on the other hand, if you are going to post something online, just go to blogspot and call it a day. Because that's what you did there. A blogspot (but on MS instead of Google) with many-many-many extra steps.
HenryBemis··on The Gruen Transfer is consuming the internet
Wait until 'it' will start pushing 'specific' products/affiliates/links to you. Because that day _will_ come. And we do know that LLMs can be easily 'heavily influenced' (Gemini blew the lid on that with the black nazis, etc.). I can easily be trained/modulated to "when drill always go for Black & Decker", "when tissues always suggest Kleenex", etc. And if it doesn's fit your specs, it will suggest "how about you trade Spec_A for 5% less on Product_B?"

One day Sam will have a chat with Jeff and presto, 99% of the links will be high-profit-margin AMZN affiliate links.

HenryBemis··on Show HN: Look Busy – Realistic-Looking Fake Calendar Events
Oh how I hate your product! :)

I hate those calendar-blockers. Dude!! You aren't alone in the world, and nobody wants to talk to you, like.. ever!! If we need to pull you in a call, chances are that we need your stupid opinion and/or results!!

On the other hand I (personally) don't set up calls or send email if a 3min Team chat resolves 'the thing', which in my case/setup it does.

But being a blocker for 2 weeks because you are a calendar blocker and things fall behind.. dick move!

HenryBemis··on FTC takes action against Uber for deceptive billing and cancellation practices
Heh, Rome!! The meter wrote €40, the taxi driver asked for €60. He tried verbal-aggression and threatened to call the police. I took a photo of the meter and asked him to please call the police, I will show them the photo and tell them that he threatened me. He took the €40 and went his merry way.

Once upon a time (around 2005-2006) I had a colleague whose father was a taxi driver. He (the colleague) was openly telling us that every cabbie cheats. Once in a blue moon you find an honest one, or one whose cheating-meter-subsystem is broken.

HenryBemis··on FTC takes action against Uber for deceptive billing and cancellation practices
Uber was (and I have no idea if still is) the culture-bro and rape-do-nothing-about-it company. I never forget that when they come up in discussions.
HenryBemis··on FTC takes action against Uber for deceptive billing and cancellation practices
CC companies have little choice. Laws in EU give right/priority to the customer, and the burden of proof to the company. Now, imagine pissing 1 million Europeans, and them all going to their banks and file a complaint. And Uber (or any other vendor) be hit by 1 million claims that they have to fight for one-at-a-time.
HenryBemis··on Ask HN: I feel pessimistic about the future – advice?
> Go outside.. spend time with family

These two. Go take a walk. Disable notifications on as-many-as-possible-apps (especially news & social). Look at your phone less. Look at your friends and family more. Enjoy a hobby.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: I feel pessimistic about the future – advice?
Stop reading the news 24/7/365. You can't change what premier/president "John Smith" is doing.

Save cash. Invest (every month) a 'small' fixed amount. So when it goes high, yeah!, when it goes low, you will buy low and lower your average cost of acquisition.

Speaking of acquisition, read the Rules of Acquisition (https://projectsanctuary.com/the_complete_ferengi_rules_of_a...)

Read "The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living". Read the 'entry of the day', think about it, then journal in the EoD. THIS will change you (to the better imho).

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: How do you talk about past jobs you regret in interviews?

Bat shit crazy management = top management's strategic goals were frequently updated
We did everything in Excel = tooling was not optimal, budget restrictions limited out tech
My manager was a fucking moron = although we had different approaches on topics, we worked to complement one-another, for much better outcomes

But basically as other(s) said, don't focus on "they were assholes" but (whatever YOU did in some nice detail) "I updated the SOP to deliver X, Y, _and_ Z using so-and-so, and at half the time, freeing up 0.25 FTE that we collaborated to enhancing A, B, _and_ C operations.

HenryBemis··on U.S.-born man from Georgia held for ICE under Florida's new anti-immigration law
Maybe someone should pass a law that limits ICE's range to "not more than 5km/miles from the nearest external border". In which case they operate as border guard and not as "let's go downtown and get us some Pakis/Venezuelans/Italians/etc." (but who's gonna pass this law?)
HenryBemis··on U.S.-born man from Georgia held for ICE under Florida's new anti-immigration law
Don't throw away the baby with the bathwater (I live in the EU but hold on a minute...)

_this_ part doesn't work. Not "nothing works anymore". Perhaps there is a special court/system/subsystem that has authority for these cases. Just like Military has its own courts, and they don't try civilians, perhaps for such cases there is a "migration court" (or something-something...)

Unless there isn't in which case, damn those ICE folks are cold!!

HenryBemis··on How a Forgotten Battle Created a More Peaceful World
> Water Yes. I can easily fast for 4-5 days once a month with no problem. Water, I've only done it a 3-4 times in my life, just to see how I react on it. I 'imagine' (not really) the scenarion of being in some country that is frequently earthquake-struck and being without access to water because of damaged infrastructure, etc. Again, the purpose is to know one's limits and _not_ to harm oneself.

How many people live in such zones where strong earthquake are frequent, and they have the real/possible risk of being trapped under some rubble for 1-2-3 days without access to food or water? Knowing your limits and not panicking helps.

>50kg What if you got a kid and you new to carry it for some distance? What if you have to kill an animal and bring it back to chop it and eat it? Again, the purpose is to do it a couple of times in your life to know what you can and cannot do. Not ruin your spine aimlessly.

HenryBemis··on How a Forgotten Battle Created a More Peaceful World
I never wrote "do it every week for the fun of it". This is more like 'do it once in your life so you know what thirst feels like'. Knowing one's limits, _without_ putting your life at risk is good in life. I foresaw silly/scary/scared responses thus the 'speak to your doc'.
HenryBemis··on How a Forgotten Battle Created a More Peaceful World
Semi-irrelevant comment, but I think it is required for the wider topic on battle/luxury/comfort zones/etc. I don't like to 'tell people what to do', especially on massive scale. I am of the opinion though that ALL (able) MEN must go basic military training (and why not.. women too).

I have ran one of them 'obstacle courses + distance + mud + pain + cold' some years back. I was by far NOT the stronger man there, and I saw some guys that were STRONG (hulk-smash dudes) and they couldn't crawl in the mud to save their lives, or they were skipping leg day, or.. or.. or.. I could see men that were 'normal/average' with military training and plowed through (perseverance to the max) while gym-boys an gym-girls were (rightfully afraid) of injuries as their bodies were 'too clean'.

So, in my 'checklist' of 'basic military training' (fully able/healthy people should/would/could..)

Know how to crawl and/or spider-walk in the mud/forest/river/etc. for 5km
Know how to climb up & down on a rope.
Know how to use a gun (and never have to).
Know how to carry a wounded/incapacitated person.
Know how to administer (the very) first aid.
Know how to (try and) stop bleeding.
Know how to read a map.
Know/practice rucking with 50kg for a 20km brisk walk (maintain speed 7-8 km/h) on uneven terrain, and no water (speak to your doctor first)
Fast for 3-4 days (just to see what it feels like)(speak to your doctor first)
Thirst for 1-2 days (just to see what it feels like)(speak to your doctor first)
And then... many of the 'free spirit' people might get a new perspective in life. many of the city-dwellers might start seeing the benefits on being in/near nature
HenryBemis··on How a Forgotten Battle Created a More Peaceful World
You are a free spirit, and the very first to take a bullet in the head when someone (in time of war) will tell/order you "do _this_" and you will say "no". Better a corpse than a naysayer.

I don't know how many here are Iron Maiden fans/listeners, but for those who don't know their work, I propose a read at the lyrics of The Trooper [0]

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What's the Most Effective Way You've Improved Focus?
I shut down (other) screens (e.g. when I need to laser-focus to write something). I keep the working laptop on. Then I meditate for 3-5mins (to calm the mind). Then I do 10-20 push-ups (to get the blood flowing). Then I drink half a glass of water (when in doubt, always hydrate!!). Then I start typing and I don't stop until I hit page 3 or 4 (pure text - minimal formatting)(beautification/graphs/images/etc. I add them in 'the end' so I don't disrupt 'the flow').
