Helithumper··on Midnight train from GA: A view of America from the tracks as airports struggle
Like other commenters I was also confused at the "~$800" comment.

I tried this myself, picking a time a few weeks in the future (round trip April 15th to 22nd). Round trip as I'm assuming you'll want to go there and come home.

All of the following info is for ATL to Washington-Area airports (BWI, DCA, IAD). Amtrak is for Atlanta to Washington Union Station

Delta (20+ nonstop a day every 30min or so, ~2hrs flight time):

- ~$244->$304 Main

- ~$444->$504 Comfort+

- ~$769-$974 First

Amtrak (11:29PM->1:47PM, 14h18m):

- $356 Coach

- $1107 Private Room (Roomette)

I'm sure that a more accurate analysis would include a spread of days.

In general, this means that with the train you'd increase your travel time by ~26 hours round trip (over a whole day) while also paying ~$112 more.

(Note that the Amtrak website prices each leg independently while Delta prices round trip, I made sure to go all the way to the cart to gather the end pricing)

I was curious so I also did a trip much sooner (March 30th to April 6th):

Delta:

- $616-$665 Main

- $785-$800 Comfort Plus

- $1065 First (they were all priced the same)

Amtrak:

- $517 Main

- $1369 Private Room (Roomette)

So for a much sooner trip you do save ~$100 for the tradeoff of ~26 hours more time spent.

It's also worth noting that this route's travel occurs primarily at night, in the dark. This means both trying to sleep on a train as well as not being able to see much outside as it'll be dark most of the ride.

> I brought a foil wrapped breakfast burrito through security

> This was years before 9/11

Given that Airport security wasn't implemented until after (and because of) 9/11, how would you have passed through security with a burrito before 9/11?

Helithumper··on The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal
“New” Real ID is 21yrs old at this point.
Helithumper··on LM Studio 0.4
For context, LMStudio has had a CLI for a while it just required the desktop app to be open already. This makes it where you can run LMStudio properly headless and not just from a terminal while the desktop app is open.

`lms chat` has existed, `lms daemon up` / "llmster" is the new command.

Helithumper··on Amazon One palm authentication discontinued
I found the palm payment at Whole Foods to be very convenient for the same reason as others in this thread.

The steps without using Amazon One were

* open the amazon app

* open the checkout thing

* click the QR code button

* click the amazon QR code

* Scan it

* Open Apple Wallet

* Pay

I hope that they will at least add the amazon QR code to apple wallet to make payment faster in store. That or something to make payment (with Amazon Prime link) as fast as with Amazon One even while not continuing Amazon One itself.

I wonder if they could use a NFC tag or something to quickly open the amazon app on your phone to pay or something?

Helithumper··on Captive Wi-Fi
also http://captive.apple.com and sometimes I'll do http://lobste.rs.

I used to use neverssl, but it's very different for .org and .com and I kept forgetting which was which.

This post reminded me to make a siri shortcut that just opens safari to http://captive.apple.com to trigger the captive portal.

Helithumper··on Virgin and Qantas to ban use of portable power banks after string of fires
Title should be updated to Virgin Australia. The article doesn't reference Virgin Atlantic or any other Virgin brands.

Helithumper··on Qualcomm AI/Copilot PCs don't live up to the hype
Got mine in today (Surface Pro 11th Gen). Overall a big meh. Performance was okay, Battery life was okay. Returning mine due to Microsoft's lackluster Surface line being the actual worst machine I've used in years. Most things ran aside from Persona 5 for some reason.

You can also just directly connect to containers using Tailscale if it's just for internal use. That is, having an internally addressable `https://container_name` on your tailnet per-container if you want. This way I can setup Immich for example and it's just on my tailnet at `https://immich` without the need for a reverse proxy, etc...

Helithumper··on Show HN: GitHub – I tried to build AWS S3 from scratch
I think this is pretty neat. Even if you don’t use it for a SaaS company I think it’s great to try your hand at making a known product.

This may also be something fun for late-college-students to do in order to brush up on their skills and to dive deep into tech that they may use in the future.

Helithumper··on Bandcamp has been sold to Songtradr. What does this mean for the musicians?
> Because of their no DRM policy and full on downloads, not just streaming, Bandcamp has basically become the only place I’ll buy music outside of CDs.

Don't forget Qobuz: https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/shop

They not only have streaming plans but also let you buy the music files directly.

Helithumper··on Twitter is being evicted from its Boulder office over unpaid rent
Original Article that TechCrunch is summarizing.

Unsure how I feel about TechCrunch just summarizing another source's article like this.

Helithumper··on Kanboard: free and open source Kanban project management software
I wouldn't say this is a detractor, based on the comment below what you quoted:

> The author of this application is not actively developing any new major features (only small fixes) > New releases are published regularly depending on the contributions made by the community > Pull requests for new features and bug fixes are accepted as long as the guidelines are followed

So it's more that no new features will be added by the main dev however it is still maintained. Other software like this exists (Miniflux for example) and they work well.

A Project doesn't need a constant influx of new features to be useful or even maintained.

EDIT: Turns out it's made by the miniflux dev which I respect.

In your second link, the article specifically states "McRae probably wasn’t acting as an ecosaboteur."

Helithumper··on How the US Air Force Ditched the Average and Saved Lives
If you ever check the average, always make sure to _at least_ add in the median. I don't know if there's any special syntax for this with symbols or whatever but having the median,average,and possibly even n together is way better than just the average.
Helithumper··on Why does science news suck so much?
Is is just me, or is this article missing links that it should have?

> Exactly 5 million on exactly that day? Probably not. But if not exactly, then just how large is the uncertainty? Here’s an example for how to do it right, from the economist, with a central estimate and an upper and lower estimate.

Where is the economist example? It's not linked or quoted or anything.

> Here’s an example for how not to do it from the Guardian. This work is published in the journal Physical Review Letters. This isn’t helpful. Here’s the same paper covered by the BBC. This one has a link. That’s how you do it.

The BBC Example isn't even linked (which I find hilarious bc the sentence is describing the BBC not linking the paper). I don't know what BBC example the author is discussing.

> An example is this story from 2019 about a paper which proposed to use certain types of rocks as natural particle detectors to search for dark matter.

What story? It's not linked....

Reading back to the top this appears to be a transcript, however it doesn't make much sense that only some of these parts are linked and as a result the transcript (for whatever reason) randomly includes links.
