HelenePhisher··on The worst volume control UI in the world (2017)
Lovely. Never would have thought about that. Thank you!
HelenePhisher··on Google announces Sec-Gemini v1 a new experimental cybersecurity model
> And it's not even possible to save one chat to disk (well, neither do the others), I just wish it did.

Ask Claude to generate a .md of the conversation, it will do that with the option to download that or a PDF of it. A lovely, but well hidden feature!

HelenePhisher··on I deleted all of my email filters
I want that! How does it work? Did you automate that?
HelenePhisher··on AltStore PAL, the first alternative app marketplace on iPhone, is available now
It really isn't.
HelenePhisher··on Gmail and Yahoo’s 2024 inbox protections and what they mean for email programs
A contact form is too complicated for this. I think an abuse header with an address to forward the entire mail with headers should be standard.
HelenePhisher··on Google search's death by a thousand cuts
I'd argue most people do not even realize they click on ads. My mother! The ad call-outs got so inconspicuous that they're almost indistinguishable from ordinary search results. And if you don't realize that and just click on the top results, you're amongst the top profitable users.
HelenePhisher··on An extensive tutorial on how to setup a Pi-Hole
You could just use Tailscale.
HelenePhisher··on Download offline maps in the Google Maps app without signing in
Have you tried mapy.cz?
HelenePhisher··on Getting a vanity phone number with four consecutive digits
neurodiverse.
HelenePhisher··on Show HN: I am building a free version of Strava
and also: https://runalyze.com

Also gets data from Strava (and so much more, mostly free).

HelenePhisher··on K-9 Mail 6.000
Hm I don't understand your point here. I do not know their Android app either but looked up the screenshots and this seems to be pretty similar to their iOS app, which is basically a small, highly functional and incredibly fast version of their website (which means you get all the features like creating aliases as well). Sadly, this means there is pretty much no offline capability. At least until now, but I know they're working on that.

HelenePhisher··on Nona – A German Search Engine
Part of that might be that non-english searches in DDG are a horrible experience.
HelenePhisher··on Study: Effectiveness of Apple's App Tracking Transparency
»[...] we found that App Tracking Transparency made no difference in the total number of active third-party trackers, and had a minimal impact on the total number of third-party tracking connection attempts. We further confirmed that detailed personal or device data was being sent to trackers in almost all cases. ATT was functionally useless in stopping third-party tracking, even when users explicitly choose “Ask App Not To Track”.«

This is ridiculous. That's privacy theatre!

HelenePhisher··on Europe's night trains are on track for a resurgence
No, this is definitely a COVID scenario. There have been spot checks in the past because of the high number of refugees but this was back in 2015 or 16. Took a sleeper in February this year, crossed four borders, no checks at all.
HelenePhisher··on Vitamin D insufficiency may account for almost 90% of Covid-19 deaths
What are your levels when you use supplements?
HelenePhisher··on Postbank to replace 12M bank cards after employees steal 'master key'
I think the German and the South African Postbanks are not related.
HelenePhisher··on Amazon no longer puts order information in email confirmations due to scraping
I wonder if that is really such a big thing ...? Is Google (the Ad and online service company) really a competitor of Amazon (the online retailer)? In what way does Google make use of trends in online shopping? And furthermore: how many companies out there are harvesting emails, and what technology are they using? Most emails are sent using e2e encryption/Tls nowadays. Gruber mentions Edison Mail in the article ... are there more? And do webmail/freemail services sell these data to big data companies?

In that light, I think I like that move by Amazon. It protects their data and my data as well. Win-win.

HelenePhisher··on Amazon no longer puts order information in email confirmations due to scraping
I guess no. They don't even put order information in emails when items are in the delivery vehicle and determined to be delivered that day. You just see the price information, not the items. That feels indeed a bit inconvenient for me particularly when I ordered a couple of things and this order is split up in different deliveries.
HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Why do you avoid Telegram, arguably one of the best cloud messengers?
I use Signal on multiple desktops. It's a good experience and really works well. I can choose both.
HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Why do you avoid Telegram, arguably one of the best cloud messengers?
I don’t want to discuss the reasons for encrypted communication, sorry. Citizenfour was a good movie though.
HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Why do you avoid Telegram, arguably one of the best cloud messengers?
No end-to-end encryption per default, and if I activate it I’m not able to see the conversation on other devices. Signal does that better.
HelenePhisher··on Fastmail Labels Beta
Just tried it, it seems to only work one-way and tags behave like regular folders. So Mailmate shows your web-created tags as folders, but if you apply an existing tag in Mailmate nothing happens in the web version.

Edit: found that discussion on JMAP support in Mailmate: https://lists.freron.com/mailmate/2019-January/010799.html

HelenePhisher··on Fastmail Labels Beta
So Mailmate should be compatible with those, can anyone confirm?
HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Looking to setup my own email server – should I do it or not bother?
How many custom domains can I add on that Standard plan?

Edit: found the answer on https://www.fastmail.com/help/account/limits.html

100 + 1 for every user in the account. That should be sufficient for most use cases.

HelenePhisher··on “This is why I use ad blockers and a pi-hole server”
Strange, cannot find any entry related to LE in the list: https://blocklist.kowabit.de/kwbtlist.txt

HelenePhisher··on Boeing 737 Max: Automated Crashes [video]
Strange, Chrome on MacOS shows it here. Ugly workaround, you could download the video and select the appropriate audio track in your video player.
HelenePhisher··on Boeing 737 Max: Automated Crashes [video]
Check the small gear icon at the bottom of the video, you can choose the audio track there.
