Hates_··on JavaScript Fatigue Fatigue
Sorry I forgot to paste it in my comment. It's the one that sgift has linked to.
Hates_··on JavaScript Fatigue Fatigue
As someone who has only ever done web development how true is the statement "web development itself is inherently complicated" when compared to other fields of programming? After seeing the Jonathan Blow talk on software quality I really questioned how much I over-estimated the complexity of what I do every day.

Hates_··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Uptime has been 100% as far as I can tell and their help and response to issues have been good too. They were really good assisting me in getting drive replaced on my main OVH server as well as setting up the failover IPs between that and a backup Kimsufi one (that was before they stopped offering failover to kimsufi ones).
Hates_··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
I use Kimsufi for a load of small side projects. AFAIK they are decommissioned OVH servers. You lose RAID as well as some other features like fail-over IPs.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using
I currently use Launchbar, does anyone have any good examples of where Alfred might be better?
Hates_··on Ask HN: How do you take notes other than using paper?
I use Evernote for non coding notes and Quiver for coding related notes.

I can only assume it's been abandoned https://github.com/brianhempel/isrubyfastyet/issues/18
Hates_··on DarkForest: Deep learning engine for playing Go from Facebook research
Definitely a great book. Eagerly awaiting the final book later this year.

I'm assuming they are the ones listed here: https://peter.bourgon.org/talks/
Hates_··on Building a business, not just an app
I'd be interested in being added to that list too :)
Hates_··on It’s 2016 already, how are websites still screwing up these user experiences?
I've heard of people having their Adsense account disabled or Adwords campaign rejected because of it though.
Hates_··on How to minimize procrastination
Of course, but there are things that can't be avoided like seeing your doctor about that pain you've been feeling/paying bills/finding a job/finishing that task your boss asked you to do/doing house work etc. Procrastinating can appear in various different areas of life, not just in those related to following your dreams and passions.
Hates_··on How I Built a $5k/mo Side Project in 5 Months
If you have a job and get paid for it then you already have a skill that you are monetising, just as active income.

I was hoping for a few more ecommerce specific tools. We've been putting together a list on http://www.ecommerce-toolkit.com
Hates_··on China's Brewing Crisis Is a Thousand Times Greece's
That really is horrible design. I completely missed that. I really wish sites would stop spreading articles over multiple pages.

Definitely worth checking out the Base16-Tomorrow theme which is the "evolution" of Tomorrow-Night.

Hates_··on Kantree – A better alternative to Trello
Shame there's not a demo board. Being able to go in and play around with some populated data without having to sign up would be a big plus.

And while this may be a better alternative to Trello, no where do I see why it's a better alternative. It would have be nice to have been sent to a click-through page that explains the reasons why, with maybe comparisons, to back up the title :)

Hates_··on Not Buying a Home Could Cost You $65,000 A Year
Those are normally all just at the start of a tenancy. Agents still charge around £100 to extend the agreement after a year.
Hates_··on Hacker News Frontpage with a 150 point threshold
One reason I use http://hckrnews.com as my HN page. After some time away it's a nice way of quickly filtering on just the main stories I might have missed.
Hates_··on Show HN: Discover what songs were used in YouTube videos
Does it still have to listen through a mic or can it detect songs from internal audio now? I don't have any speakers and just use headphones.
Hates_··on Clampdown on cold call companies unveiled by government
So when does a "customer development call" become a cold call? As a small startup trying to talk to potential customers how does this affect me? All these books on startups talk about picking up the phone and talking to people.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Is it foolish to open source your SAAS business source code?
The example that springs to mind is Spree (https://spreecommerce.com/). Spree itself is open source, but Spree Commerce make their money from support, implementation and premium offerings.
Hates_··on Facebook was down
What about solutions like Dropbox or Gmail? Or even plain old email for that matter. Even if you look after those yourself, how can you be 100% sure that you can offer a service that is more secure and reliable than a third party?

Hates_··on Show HN: MackerNews – Beautiful Readable HN Articles
AlienBlue was a paid purchase until it was acquired by Reddit. I believe they'll soon start charging for the Pro version at some point in the near future again.
Hates_··on You cannot have more than 10 years of experience in Rails
The difference between knowing Rails and knowing how to best apply its abilities come with experience IMO. While it provides an easy approach to web development it's still extremely easy to approach things in the wrong manner with Rails. There is a lot of bad Rails code out there written by people who've been doing using Rails for more than a couple of years.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Confused software developer
You already have experience in .NET so I'm not sure why you are trying to move away from it to a language in which you have no experience at all. You mention the work you did on the simple CMS and praying that it worked. Build on those skills. If you could do it again what would you differently. What methods could you employ so that you didn't have to pray it worked. Read up on webservices so that you fully understand them. Getting good takes a lot of time. Even though I know a few languages and frameworks very well, moving to something new can feel like starting all over again.

The great thing about software is that there are plenty of ways to get experience outside of having a job. Write your own software or develop your own sites that show off your capabilities. Make the source available on Github if you want. Write some blog posts. Help out on Stackoverflow.
