Halan··on AI makes tech debt more expensive
It is not just the code produced with code generation tools but also business logic using gen AI.

For example a RAG pipeline. People are rushing things to market that are not built to last. The likes of LangChain etc. offer little software engineering polishing. I wish there were a more mature enterprise framework. Spring AI is still in the making and Go is lagging behind.

Halan··on Show HN: A modern Jupyter client for macOS
The reason people use an actual IDE instead of Jupyter web is because it allows you to jump in the libraries source code
Halan··on Ask HN: What's Rabbit R1 business model?
This play makes sense, I am just surprised it is coming from a startup. They must be backed by somebody with deep pockets.
Halan··on Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights
Of course it is a good thing but nevertheless funny because it is something we take for granted. We are also used to get a compensation on top of the refund.

Btw escalate it to CAA and they will handle this. Not only you will get a refund but the compensation as well

Halan··on Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights
Anyone from EU/UK will laugh at this news
Halan··on Show HN: Name That Nation
Not at all, there might be a 4/5 neighbour countries you don’t fully remember which one is which but generally I don’t know many people who would find that not boring. Maybe it is an European thing
Halan··on Show HN: Name That Nation
Good example but what adult doesn’t know all the countries of the world?

Halan··on Over 2k shell companies have directors aged 123 years or older
Everyone knows that billionaire vampires under 300 years old are trust fund vampires
Halan··on Over 2k shell companies have directors aged 123 years or older
Vampires exist
Halan··on Microsoft Teams went down around the world for over eight hours
My company is thinking of transitioning from Zoom to Teams in 2025. Looks like we will have meeting free days
Halan··on Terraform module for scalable GitHub action runners on AWS
Been using Scalesets + Karpenter and the only problem is the occasional GH availability taking a dip
Halan··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
Good luck convincing Greece to have two timezones. These are the people who made a Macedonia change their name to North Macedonia
Halan··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
Crete not having the same timezone as the rest of Greece?
Halan··on The OpenTF Manifesto
Thanks Hashicorp for providing me with an excuse to convince my management to give Crossplane a try
Halan··on Apple Set to Launch iPhone 15 Series Come September 13th
Do you think that those buying more expensive thing earn more?

By this logic I need to reassess my life decisions, tech must not be paying me much, I’ve seen people serving tables with better phones than mine and had food delivered in Teslas

Halan··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
Why not paying YT premium if you care that much about morality.
Halan··on MrBeast has become a viral sensation for his acts of altruism
Unpopular opinion, I respect him more than most channels for grownups that pretend to be “educational”.

Take LTT as an example. Their titles are extremely click bite-y. Linus and his team talk an awful bunch about their plans for YT but then their execution feels so cheap.

Mr. Beast instead uses titles that feel like click bites but then goes on explaining why that is true in the video, he doesn’t make a bunch of videos boasting about his media company and he is consistent in his production, at least on the main channel. I am not a fan of his content but wish there were more YouTubers with a solid vision on the platform.

Halan··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
Let’s hope Elon doesn’t read this
Halan··on Spotify CEO renews attack on Apple after Musk's salvo
For those debating privacy here, we are still waiting for the year of Linux on desktop what makes you think that a fully featured smartphone with true privacy control is possible? Good luck staying away from Google on Android, it is a matter of choosing the less evil, and in my opinion Google is worse than Apple. Not only their entire business model is ads, they also run hardware divisions to get more ads revenue. Sure, Apple will never pass on the opportunity for some extra ads revenue but might have less pressure from its board and stakeholder to squeeze every single penny given the argument that this would impact the main revenue stream. Google does not have this luxory
Halan··on The Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition
The words chromebook and privacy in the same marketing material for a product that clearly targets power users is an audacious choice
Halan··on “Who Should Write the Terraform?”
Sure, it comes from ignorance but none of these people are young, myself included. Possessing domain knowledge cannot be enough anymore on its own as it implies making room for limiting solutions like terraform that only exist to make the life easier for those who call themselves tech professionals without knowing how to write code. Everyone should be a software engineer. Infrastructure should be in code, and follow software development practices. I hope that the CDKs will become the norm. This also means that nobody will need to “support” anybody but rather “work with” a teammate because they would all be software engineers, no more devops, qa, software walls. It is possible, anybody can still be a SME in something while also being a software engineer, people are just lazy because the industry pays you 6 digits even if you only know terraform and aws.
Halan··on “Who Should Write the Terraform?”
Everything should be in code, I feel for sys admins but they had all the time to become software professionals. No more mercy
Halan··on “Who Should Write the Terraform?”
Nobody should write terraform
Halan··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
Suggestion for the next blog entry: How my blog post going viral on Hacker News pushed me to finally use a CDN
Halan··on Microsoft Windows is prohibited at Gitlab
Exactly, is hard to get really high memory usage pressure with 32gb and only by running containers with docker for mac latest engine. Sure, it would try grab as many GB as you set in its configuration but you won’t actually get high memory usage unless running something like a dozen of KinD clusters with worker nodes all at the same time
Halan··on Microsoft Windows is prohibited at Gitlab
Good point for the extra displays but in this case they are using only 32gb which makes it a bit overkill unless they do video editing work
Halan··on Microsoft Windows is prohibited at Gitlab
I am curious about the M1 max for the top performing configuration, wonder if there is a business need for it over an M1 pro with the same storage and memory. Especially since they are mentioning the few hundred dollars a windows pro licence would cost as a reason not to get windows laptops.
Halan··on Ask HN: Are Changelogs a Must?
What benefit would a changelog bring you if you were to release up to production any change as soon as it hits main and work without long living branches? Wouldn’t it effectively be a git history?
Halan··on Apple Silicon is an inconvenient truth
I have the 16inch and I have never heard it’s fan. Not even while doing some intense multitasking in a room at 30 degrees Celsius. If they had told me this was possible two years ago I would have laughed
