Yea maybe it possible for these firms to poach top talent from tech companies, but I doubt it. Even if they pay the same prestige is worse. And employees at this level are often making a mil at tech companies, non tech just cant afford that. Much more likely that they just move all tech ops overseas.
And I disagree. There are not enough locals who are able and willing to fill these roles at non prestigious non tech companies in omaha. If the H1Bs leave these companies I dont think they would be able to realistically replace them. Obviously they could find someone to take the job, I just think theyd be worse at it. Worse enough to materially change outcomes.
Very few people will pay mathematicians to produce as if they were making art. The big problem here is that counting proofs is how mathematicians historically have created legitimacy for the universities they work for. Mathematicians in the past 100 years have been paid solely for the prestige they generate, the work itself is irrelevant to the university. If the prestige signal dies universities will spend less on math departments. Every math professor will be expected to teach undergrads as well as a stable of grad students. That’s the value they are actually able to provide to universities.
In my experience H1B workers are consistently exceptional. At big tech most employees are pretty good so it doesn’t stand out, but at random fortune 500s tech teams are often led by h1bs who are clearly the most competent employees on the department even though they usually aren’t involved in management. My experience from around 5 Fortune 500 non tech companies. These companies would have big problems if they couldn’t recruit exceptional foreign workers
The fees are larger than the rewards. Most business people pay with credit card is competitive. Retail and restaurants absolutely do pass savings on to customers because of how high competition is.
I am pretty sure that the ellisons care more about US interests than israeli interests. Whether they are selfish is orthogonal to whether they are a foreign adversary. Most people are selfish.
Full quote is "Six years later we are beginning to understand the answer to this question. Machines have ingested the mathematics on the internet and are able to manipulate this data in a coherent way. The Erdős unit distance disproof came about because a machine happened to be an expert both in discrete geometry and class field theory; one rarely finds humans who are simultaneously experts in both"
Yea but that’s not happening. The question is how this compares to the status quo. It could easily be much worse, could easily be a fair bit better too imo. Most people don’t know a thing about who they vote for
Downvoted for the truth. Everyone recommending this book now is young because literally everyone who likes to read nonfiction was reading it in the 90s
> if you are truly concerned about AI safety share proof of donation of 100% of your OpenAI earnings and equity towards undoing the damage you have done to society during your time there.
I mean you can be truly concerned and also think donating to AI safety doesnt work, or maybe just be a bit selfish. That doesnt make the concern less real. Its easy to read these articles as the author taking the moral high ground and writing it as some sort of way of proving to themselves theyre a good person, but isnt it just as likely that they think providing an inside perspective can do good by convincing people openAI is a bad actor? I think most of these AI insider accounts largely agree with you that theyre not the most upstanding citizens, does that mean we should write them off?
In times of low social unrest theyd rather create a list of dissidents than try to shut them down. Keeps unrest lower and then when they need to spin up the domestic security apparatus they already know who to watch
I think a lot of the "AI slop" stuff is post training that they are doing on purpose and that they internally have models that do not have the annoying prose.
Price discrimination on monopoly goods doesnt seem so bad to me. A lot of people who arent willing to pay so much would likely be able to get stuff that otherwise would be limited to the wealthy. Drug prices should definitely have price discrimination as far as Im concerned.
The point of austerity isnt really that it works. The point is that its possible for an external actor to force a country into austerity. Its a last resort that is used when the domestic government is unable to or refuses to come up with a workable budget.
Putting fiscal policy in technocrats hands seems like a bad idea to me. Most technocrats are completely divorced from the experience of average people. Since their incentives dont align they would end up implementing bad policy thinking it was good. Tax policy could certainly work though. Most tax law is written by technocrats today, they just need a politician to champion it after its written for it to become a law.
They have a fiduciary duty to act in their shareholders interests. Engaging in short term semi fraud arguably creates bad pr which is not in the shareholders interests even if it saves billions of dollars.
Law is not morality. It makes plenty of sense to be mad about people making life worse for others even if theyre not breaking the law. We should expect people, certainly powerful ones, to behave with good faith. We should also push our government to fix laws so that people who dont behave with good faith are punished, but it still makes sense to be mad at the bad actor.
The models get dumb as context fills. Subagents allow them to accomplish a task with minimal context rot. You can also use cheaper models for subagent tasks
Even if his case is a winner he wouldnt just get the current day value of the shares, he'd get the value at vesting time plus interest which is nowhere close to a billion dollars.
Yea on second thought I see it. One of the gentrifying neighborhoods in my city has a large group of longtime residents who are doing everything they can to slow down gentrification by making the area a worse place to live. They’d probably be working even harder if there was an lvt.
