HDThoreaun··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
Putting fiscal policy in technocrats hands seems like a bad idea to me. Most technocrats are completely divorced from the experience of average people. Since their incentives dont align they would end up implementing bad policy thinking it was good. Tax policy could certainly work though. Most tax law is written by technocrats today, they just need a politician to champion it after its written for it to become a law.

No, according to the law its literally our money

In the court of opinion we need not bother with innocent until proven guilty.

They have a fiduciary duty to act in their shareholders interests. Engaging in short term semi fraud arguably creates bad pr which is not in the shareholders interests even if it saves billions of dollars.

Law is not morality. It makes plenty of sense to be mad about people making life worse for others even if theyre not breaking the law. We should expect people, certainly powerful ones, to behave with good faith. We should also push our government to fix laws so that people who dont behave with good faith are punished, but it still makes sense to be mad at the bad actor.

The models get dumb as context fills. Subagents allow them to accomplish a task with minimal context rot. You can also use cheaper models for subagent tasks

No he doesnt? Pretty much every one of his posts has inaccuracies and his predications have all been crap danluu.com/zitron/

HDThoreaun··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
Even if his case is a winner he wouldnt just get the current day value of the shares, he'd get the value at vesting time plus interest which is nowhere close to a billion dollars.
HDThoreaun··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Yea on second thought I see it. One of the gentrifying neighborhoods in my city has a large group of longtime residents who are doing everything they can to slow down gentrification by making the area a worse place to live. They’d probably be working even harder if there was an lvt.
HDThoreaun··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
He didnt though. He only exercised 3/4 of them and it sounds like he sold those shares
HDThoreaun··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Land is worthless under 100% LVT. Your land value going up just means you owe the government more in rent every year, since the government owns all the land rents. The only real solution to this problem is prop 13 I think which georgists hate. Nationwide prop 13(only on homes) + LVT is still probably better than the current system though imo, although it creates a huge incentive to never move

Altman and dario have repeatedly gone to washington to lobby for more regulation on AI.

Kinda weird that theyre testing its ability to dox people
HDThoreaun··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
In my experience the vast majority of NIMBYs do not care about how much their property is worth. They just really don’t want the area they live in to change, because they think all change is bad.
HDThoreaun··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
I agree this seems like the most realistic way to implement an lvt. A pure lvt would need to have tons of loopholes to convince people to build industry in low value places. If a builder thinks their taxes will skyrocket in the future they will go overseas. The yearly evaluation is ripe for corruption(my city has tons of corruption in property taxes evaluations).

One of the lessons of macroeconomics is that subsidizing demand doesn’t really grow the economy, it’s mostly just results in inflation. Obviously not a hard law but if UBI causes people to work less then the economy will shrink, no matter how much stuff people want to buy.

The majority of Americans own the home they live in. That’s the real issue here. The landlord the tradesman is enriching is himself.

If you incorporate and don’t pay yourself a salary you still owe corporate taxes.

People absolutely care about the tax rate techies making 500k are paying. They’ll care even more when the billionaires start blasting the airwaves with ads about how unfair it all is.

Athletes have the highest tax rate in the country, why do you think people don’t care about their tax rate?

As far as I know the only tech billionaire with significant land holdings is gates. Zuckerberg and Ellison have big holdings too but not compared to the land per wealth that normal Americans have.

I don’t see how the people building ugly things would benefit really. If the goal is a factory or something that necessarily has to be ugly building it on low value land makes more sense then lowering the value of high value land. If the goal is just to be a dick, well people already do that by leaving these lots vacant.

Obviously. If you live in a single family home next door to Disneyland you’re ducking over all the people who want to stay in a hotel there. You should have to pay for that privilege.
HDThoreaun··on S.F. Democratic Party stands behind Flock surveillance cameras in vote
Robbery has fallen from 10 per 1000 to around 6. There are definitely a lot of confounders so Im not trying to claim is was 100% the surveillance but I do think the surveillance contributed to lower violent crime rates.
HDThoreaun··on S.F. Democratic Party stands behind Flock surveillance cameras in vote
Pretty much yea. Knifing per capita is down like 75% since they installed the cameras and homicide per capita is down 50%
HDThoreaun··on S.F. Democratic Party stands behind Flock surveillance cameras in vote
Am I the only one here who doesnt really care that the government is watching me all the time? London effectively eliminated violent crime by watching everyone all the time, doesnt seem to bad to me.
HDThoreaun··on The darker side of being a doctor
Congress decides how many doctors are trained each year. Residencies lose money so they rely on federal subsidies, Congress has limited the number of residency slots that get funded and that’s the number of doctors that get trained each year. Medical schools can’t expand without residency funding expansion.
HDThoreaun··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Looking at cahsr it is clear that some of the people in charge of infra in California are stupid. They made bad decisions and now I question the new ones they make.
HDThoreaun··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
This is a classic HN “armchair critic” comment. Running a cherry picker team along a whole canal is far more expensive than maintenance would be on a field of solar panels.
HDThoreaun··on Tokens too cheap to meter
No it really does not look that way. It sort of sounds like it might look that way at some point in the future but micro reactors are not useful for utility generation today.
