Gurkenmaster··on Valve Announces Source 2, and It’ll Be Free
I call it click-bait gaming.
Gurkenmaster··on Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free
Someone else in this submission mentioned this thread: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?52618-Large-S...

>In 4.6 maximum size of map is 20km x 20km.

>Now to put it into perspective. Single continent on Azeroth in WoW (exluding Northend and Pandaria) is something like 7x4km.

Gurkenmaster··on Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free
I was thinking it's a pun about japanese alcohol.
Gurkenmaster··on Mozilla to open first-world front in Firefox OS war
Dalvik is a joke, even v8 is faster than it and it's not a JVM. That's why Oracle was trying to sue Google.
Gurkenmaster··on How to Make Multicore Chips Faster, More Efficient
I'm still waiting for a proper 8 core consumer x86 CPU. AMD's chips don't count because they perform worse than the ones from intel.
Gurkenmaster··on Why SATA is now obsolete
SSDs are so fast let's make them slow again!
Gurkenmaster··on C# Edit and Continue and Make Object ID Improvements in CTP 6
>The following types of edits are not supported: Deletion of members, types, or entire method bodies

Can't they just pretend that they don't exist anymore without changing anything?

Gurkenmaster··on Silicon Valley Could Learn a Lot From Skater Culture, Just Not Meritocracy
I don't think so. If they are treated well they won't complain and you will never hear about them.
Gurkenmaster··on Show HN: A histogram of salaries given to H1B workers in the software industry
The bars are tiny when I select architect/consultant/manager in Arizona.
Gurkenmaster··on The Emterpreter: Run asm.js code before it can be parsed
Does this count? http://download.oracle.com/otndocs/products/javafx/2/samples...
Gurkenmaster··on 'Nobody My Age Can Afford to Stay Here Forever'
Right. I forgot that they have to pay (hopefully) 4% interest for the next 25 years. That's an insane amount of money for a flat.
Gurkenmaster··on 'Nobody My Age Can Afford to Stay Here Forever'
On the other hand you can sell your flat for a higher price in the future.
Gurkenmaster··on Goodbye “undefined is not a function”

Gurkenmaster··on DIY: kernel panic OS X and iOS in 10 LOC
Some projects also have terrible project layouts. I have to poke around for several minutes just to find the source folder.
Gurkenmaster··on Extracting the SuperFish certificate
>Site is offline due to DDOS with the recent media attention.

Interestingly that site got DDOS'd.

Gurkenmaster··on Microsoft is interesting again
They acquired Nokia with 30,000 employees then fired about one third of those.
Gurkenmaster··on Why the world's biggest military keeps losing wars
I think the majority of china's population eats rice which doesn't have to be processed as much as bread.
Gurkenmaster··on Who Can Name the Bigger Number?
Just do -1 on an unsigned number if you're that lazy.
Gurkenmaster··on 1-2 year SSD wear on build boxes has been minimal
Does this mean that SSDs will lose data if you reach the write limit and continue reading from it?
Gurkenmaster··on Why OccupyGPL is wrong
>GPL ensures freedom for users of the software, not developers of the software

GPL may be true for end user facing applications but it's terrible for libraries where the primary user is the developer.

Gurkenmaster··on Why OccupyGPL is wrong
It's not theft because you can copy the "chickens" in this case.
Gurkenmaster··on React’s diff algorithm (2013)
Immediate mode UI is quite similar to pull based FRP.
Gurkenmaster··on YC startup accused of stealing design from CBInsights
It sucks so much that someone else copied it?
Gurkenmaster··on The Island Where People Forget to Die
I live in germany but I tried to use common sense.

In this scenario our society would be split into two groups if we pay pensions for eternity:

Those who lived long enough to receive their pension. Their body turns 30 again thanks to breakthroughs in science. And those who never age beyond 30 and so they never get their pension.

The first group effectively gets "basic income" and they probably own houses/apartments so their living costs are quite low. You can either let everyone have pensions or get rid of pensions.

Gurkenmaster··on The Island Where People Forget to Die
>20? Maybe. but How about being in the body of a 30- or 40-year old again? I can't imagine any 70-year olds not wanting to have a more "hassle-free" body, all other things being equal.

Nobody is going to pay for your pension forever. Do you really want to spend your entire life working?

Gurkenmaster··on $500k of Azure credit for YC startups
I can browse the site with a cucumber (no dedicated gpu) with firefox and I had no problems.
Gurkenmaster··on Writing Multithreaded Applications in C++
>I mean threads were not really useful on single cores, were they ?

Every application you run has at least one thread or how did you think the main function is run? You won't be able to run multiple applications without multi-tasking.

>how did it really change things for GUIs.

GUI applications are usually single threaded. This means if you run anything blocking in that thread the entire application will freeze. The GUI thread can still continue if you run your blocking task in a worker thread.

The OS sheduler will take care of your threads even if you have only a single core to make sure everything remains responsive. (yes they were clearly talking about websites for mobile devices /sarcasm)

The only advantage of parallelism compared to concurrency is more performance.

Gurkenmaster··on YC for Hardware
Yes. DHL the leading logistics company has scattered these: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/Packstati... throughout germany.
Gurkenmaster··on You gotta be rich to own a cheap car
I do this everytime. It's easy but I often mess it up so my car is too far on the left.
Gurkenmaster··on JSON, interfaces, and go generate
Sorry I actually meant Lists. In Java List<String> is just List (since they aren't reified) at compile time so you have to explicitly deserialize an String[] and then manually throw it into an ArrayList<String>.
