Gualdrapo··on Tether: iMessage, SMS, etc. on Linux
One of the not cool things about KDE Connect is that its "plugins" system doesn't seem like it.

Where are more plugins for it? How you add them? Where are docs for creating them?

I haven't had a great feeling when asking its dev about stuff but hope that situation has changed. Having a proper plugin system would let people like OP extend KDEConnect and potentially benefit more people, instead of being subjected to the will of its devs and the roadmap.

Gualdrapo··on How I Design with AI
This kinda sounds like so-called "design thinking" but with ai and extra steps
Gualdrapo··on “It works better in the app”
I sell stuff ocassionaly on a "local" platform called MercadoLibre (like, I could afford a new handlebar for my bicycle so I could sell there the old one). Mercadolibre kind of wants to be the argentinian Amazon, even lobbying in the argentinian government so they will ban similar platforms from other countries. With time, MercadoLibre has become incredibly hostile and greedy for us small sellers, while favoring corpos.

They charge you 25% for each sale you do via their platform, but the latest thing they did was to force you to "identify" you are you via a website where they track your face features and scan your ID "because of security". Yeah, that sounds good, so I did that in 2021.

They asked this again last year because of reasons. But this time they won't let you use a regular web browser: they forced you to do this via their app. No matter how much you try, it will always fail citing "compatibility issues" or "errors". I tried to complain but their customer support is incredibly shitty, if you even manage how to find to contact them.

But oh surprise, their "app" is just a web wrapper.

Gualdrapo··on Nebula Sans
The differences are really, really subtle, I'd bet most people (including me) would have a really hard time telling them apart.

I agree with that one person (I can't recall when or where I read this) who said modern typography is getting so frivolous about doing personalised typographic families for startups instead of extending the existing ones to cover more languages and scripts than latin.

But as they say here, "por la plata baila el perro" (something like "a dog would dance for money")

Gualdrapo··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
A few days ago I learned guerrilla dissent groups here in Colombia were using Facebook and Tiktok to target children towards joining them. $16.68B is too little for them.
Gualdrapo··on Nobody Wants Artisanal Code Anymore
AI slop aside, lately I've been thinking about that term, it seems to fit what I do - artisanal coding. Just saw a comment here saying that it never mattered but at least for frontend it happens there are cases you can still be able to tell where it was made by an LLM agent or it was made by a human.

Take for example this thing I found on HN the other day:

https://uiverse.io/GreyD097/great-rat-93

There are lots of magic numbers in the CSS, extra and redundant elements in the HTML that shouldn't be needed if the author was aware of radial gradients, and unoptimized and redundant SVG elements that very well could have been CSS shapes or a single SVG symbol that can be easily cloned and rotated.

I just wish there are still people (and employers!) that actually care for this kind of stuff.

Gualdrapo··on Show HN: TeXbrain, a LaTeX editor that runs pdfTeX in the browser via WASM
This is super cool. I wish there was something like this for ConTeXt too.
Gualdrapo··on Omacom Foundation funding hits $10M
Still it's really weird imho - there are many projects that are the foundation of many important things are struggling finantially (maybe even Arch itself, which its apparently the base of this thing) yet these people have this absurd amount of money to spend on linux ai slop. Sounds like another example of "money is in the wrong hands" but well. Hoping the projects this thing depends on can get some benefits from this and that this won't be a similar case like the linux foundation.

Gualdrapo··on HTML Can Do That
I seem to recall there was a proposal to add such thing to <select>s
Gualdrapo··on The Future of CSS: Target Multiple Classes with the Class Prefix Selector
I don't think they will go that far. Just look at the attribute selectors, - they're just 5 of them:

Gualdrapo··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
I wish that was true for all cases. My uni email is 99.9% spam and everything comes from official accounts sending irrelevant stuff to everyone and their grandma
Gualdrapo··on GIMP Development Update
I don't know what it has to do with anything - GIMP has been around for a while and has been the de facto FOSS alternative for photoshop for so long. That doesn't make that several of its UX and UI decisions are at least questionable nor make that comment you're replying any less true.

Not to mention the fact that if you ever mention in any way that GIMP's UX/UI could be better to anyone of its veteran devs they would turn weirdly ultra defensive and take everything personal.

Gualdrapo··on GIMP Development Update
> Krita and other image editors)

Krita is not an image editor but a digital painting program. GIMP is a much more complete image editor despite its quirks.

Gualdrapo··on Webmaster a Manifesto for Everyone
I was a webmaster for my uni (trying to handle the abhorrent monstrosities of Typo3) and some other unis around here (WordPress and Joomla), all of them while juggling with several other tasks (web development, graphic design, etc., etc.).

"Webmaster" being the person who adds, updates and deletes contents on a daily basis, and fixes misc, small issues with both frontend and backend. Or at least that's how that word has been used in those environments I've worked. My contracts listed that among web dev, graphic design and other tasks, one of them was doing webmaster duties.

With that in mind I feel like the author is extrapolating the concept quite a bit - one of the first quotes in the first part acknowledges that a "webmaster" is kind of a website administrator. Granted, in my case I learned some stuff "by force" because I had to deal with several stupid problems, and many of them that I caused by myself; but at no time I was supposed that my task was to make the website do something it was not supposed to do. It's rather a stressful job (believe it or not), as with pretty much anything web development related. But the point is that we as webmasters can't do much to do the truly thing that can save the current web, to reclaim it back from the greedy hands of the giant corpos.

Gualdrapo··on [dead]
What do you mean "will be", are we still in 2021?
Gualdrapo··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
It also loaded too fast because it has no (ai-generated/3d/high color contrast) 10MB background image in the hero section
Gualdrapo··on Ethical Cold Outreach
You'd be trying to sell something to someone by deceiving them into thinking they are interacting with a real human - if your customer ever finds out, any trust they had on you will be lost and any reputation you might have could go directly to the trash bin.

I imagine for some people it can be kind of hard to tell in this case, but even for someone not in the known for the power of AI made stuff like me there are red flags. The blur of the background where "Chase" is doesn't seem to match a "natural" aperture taken from a camera and even the perspective seems odd. Granted, you could say it can be just a generated background from zoom or something, but there are no visible artifacts when he moves, whereas you can see them on any zoom call when someone applies that effect. Also the timing in his speech can change dramatically all of a sudden for no reason whatsoever.

I'm really dumb about marketing stuff, as with most things, so I can't think of any reason you'd prefer to pull out all of this stuff instead of doing something like the article suggested - being honest and stating that the message you are getting is generated by a bot or something.

Gualdrapo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
> But if you are aware of this and aware of the ways in which LLMs are likely to shit the bed, it is quicker to get from request to useful information than it has been with Google search since like 2017.

The point is not about 'quicker' requests but precise requests. It definitely has worsened, though not on a single degree on al levels like the HN hivemind claims, but some aspects are still somewhat precise but others are definitely crap.

i.e. when searching about my neighborhood it still returns better results than bing, yahoo, ddg, yandex and what have you. But they are buried into a load of crap of alleged "relevant" results (those things past the ai stuff) that aren't relevant in any way.

Gualdrapo··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
Didn't feel it but apparently it lasted several minutes and there was a lot of panic here in Bogota. Could see lots of people going out of their apartments in pijamas.

Also TIL that in 2023, while in a smaller earthquake webcam streamers (adult entretainers) went out of their apartments in lingerie.

Gualdrapo··on Perspec 1.0
Last time I used Gimp it had a plugin that let you correct perspective, wonder how they both compare
Gualdrapo··on Playing with Georgia
I never liked it that much. Yes, it came with WinXP and used it in my physics reports when I had no idea about LaTeX trying to emulate the Computer Modern look of them, but when I learned some LaTeX found out you could use a font that became one my favorite serif fonts ever, Cambria. I still use it from time to time with ConTeXt.

Gualdrapo··on The AI jobs apocalypse probably isn't coming anytime soon
All I know is that trying to get a job now is being way more brutal than before. The closest thing I got this month was a scam email from an alleged "independent global senior recruiter" "currently supporting a confidential search for a company developing AI-powered digital products". The made-with-ai smell was all over the place, the company in mention allegedly was adobe, and am pretty sure they got my email from the "who wants to be hired?" posts in here.
Gualdrapo··on Re: Bye Bye Gravatar
Am on phone too but also am pretty sure it's not Arial. It seems like Work Sans to me?
Gualdrapo··on Re: Bye Bye Gravatar
> We live in a world with cognitive dissonance. We have to because if you don't you'd go insane.

Now I feel it's more that we are just way irrational and stupid than we'd like to admit. Accepting our cognitive dissonances would hurt so bad our anthropocentric ego.

Gualdrapo··on 98.css
More than legal concerns is that theming engines on each DE can be a bit limiting trying to do such things. i.e. for KDE Plasma you'd need to do a fair amount of SVG trickery to reach 100% accuracy respect of the originals.

Plus the icons thing - they're not as easy as people might think.

But this xfce-winxp-tc seems to be really, really close to the original. In those first two screenshots I thought it was just screenshots of the original WinXP.

Also the CSS framework subject of this thread looks really identical to the widgets and stuff of Win98.

But if you want true 100% pixel-perfect windows 98/xp/whatever... Just use them.

Gualdrapo··on Back to Kagi
Me too, but to be honest startpage is just fine for me. Here we haven't had yet the degradation of results they have in the us somehow - google (and startpage, by extension) is stil great for showing local stuff. Haven't been able to replicate that kind of accuracy with the likes of ddg or brave search.

The only downside is that it can have bangs like ddg, which are a ridiculously great feature.
