Grisu_FTP··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
This is everything and much more than i wanted from a VR system, it feels like its designed exactly for me. Also tbh i thought after the steam machine price shock i got that this will be like 200 more.

1. It is SteamOS with desktop mode, the SteamDeck made me really miss that feature on any newer console i use like my ps5 or switch 2. Like even if we just limit it to games, playing games like The Binding of Isaac or Minecraft unmodded is a pain for me. Even just using websites for Streaming Services that dont have their app on every system ever, PS5 and Switch 2 dont even have webbrowsers you can just access, I think you have to edit DNS settings to make it think you have to sign up for a free wifi in the browser IIRC.

2. Wireless Streaming without the (Quest 3S) downsides of Wireless Streaming. I have a 6ghz router in my room, connected to my Laptop with an ethernet cable and tried the streaming on a quest 3S. I dont want todo that ever again, it was so inconsistent. It felt like the beatsaber song and gameplay speed up and slowed down like 1-5% in waves to catch up with the stream. Also sometimes my right eye turned into a chess grid of black pixels but i would assume that was more of a Linux Quirk. Also since i use a Laptop i dont want any wires from my headset to the Laptop, I dont want to pull my laptop and possibly more off my desk in the middle of a game. Also for movement games like beatsaber i find cables really annoying when you want to quickly accelerate.

3. Both the Windows mixed reality Headset and Quest 3S had TERRIBLE software. To continue using the WMR i had to reinstall windows like once every 1-2 months. Which just ended up with me stopping to play VR (Like why would i reinstall my PC like 6-12 times a year just to play those 3-4 games. From what i know from the steamdeck, the frame will be so so much better in this regard. On the Quest i wouldnt even have my steam library without connecting to a PC.

4. An ARM linux device that doesnt contain 10-15 year old somewhat mid phone hardware. Like i had been thinking about getting a macbook for asahi linux for a long time now just because it seemed like the best in that regard and i really really wanted a finished, high performance ARM device. And if i can run that many steam games on my non actively cooled phone already without the frame even being out (Since both use the FEX layer) (which has the same chip as the frame) I feel like i will really enjoy it for local Minecraft VR and Beatsaber and probably more.

5. The controllers. LTT complained about the "Default Xbox layout" because reaching all buttons is a bit hard, but for me, both the meta quest 3S and Samsung odyssey + controllers had a severe lack of buttons to bind game actions to. Also i like bigger controllers anyway, I like the Steam controller, I like the Wii u Gamepad, I like the steamdeck and I even like the OG xbox controller. To me those werent big clunky controllers, they were (or are) the most comfortable controllers i have used so far.

The only 2 things im eagerly waiting for more Info on is the "Much better comfort" i have been hearing about and the ability to install .APK files.

Either way im already sold on this thing and believe i will LOVE it for years and years to come.

It has been a constant good source for TitleIDs (for the steam compat folder when modding on linux), for Steam frame Hopium (when they updated FEX or Lepton or the Stick driver again) and looking at the patch history of games.

Grisu_FTP··on Three sites made 215,128 “best software” pages for AI. Perplexity cites them
I got a year of free Perplexity Pro with my Revolut sub. At first I really, really liked it. It felt faster, better, and smarter than (free) ChatGPT. But instead of getting better (or at worst staying at the same level), it seems like it gets worse and worse instead.

For a few months now I have it that it randomly switches to another language for like 1–2 words (most often Japanese) mid sentence. It feels like it got worse at referencing earlier parts of the same convo. For example, I asked it to compare a 9‑year‑old flagship phone chip to the newest model of the smartwatch the same company produces. I used the short version of the phone name (left away the company name since I thought the relation would be obvious enough).

It then asked what I meant by the short version, if I meant the watch of a competitor, if I meant some random vacuum robot, or if I meant something entirely different.

I then said the full phone name and it gave me back a summarization of “Is Phone Name still usable as a daily driver in 2026?” Something I never asked.

Grisu_FTP··on Tell HN: PayPal blocks GrapheneOS
I still remember when my bank wanted me to run Android 9 instead of my Android 15 rom (without root) on my Samsung S8 because "muh security!!"

Funnily enough, the only way to hide those detections was to Root my phone... And i still remember when i had an appointment there, they wanted to see something in my Bank app, i opened it (and i assume it had an update since i then last used it) and a big "THIS DEVICE IS NOT SUPPORTED. ROOT IS NOT SUPPORTED" poped up

But was as simple as readding the bank app to my root hiders.

but still, i hate this security theater

Grisu_FTP··on Microsoft isn't removing Copilot from Windows 11, it's just renaming it
I may be wrong but i remember video output over usbc being added in the pixel 7 or 8
Grisu_FTP··on Microsoft isn't removing Copilot from Windows 11, it's just renaming it
Still salty about my mixed reality experience.

Had to basically reinstall my PC every 3 months (if i used vr in those times, which i stopped after a few reinstalls) because the mixed reality app somehow broke itself again with no amount of updates/fixing/reinstalling or terminal work fixing it. I tried, i tried alot but all the hours were just wasted since only a clean install worked, for about 2-3 months until it just decides it doesnt want to open again.

The windows mixed reality portal has then made me stop playing vr completly about 5-6 years ago because i couldnt justify reinstalling everything every few months for a few hours of beatsaber and then like 3-4 years ago i FULLY switched to linux so now its just a paperweight anyway (i think they removed the support in modern windows anyway iirc)

Basically just waiting for the steam frame each and every day currently

Grisu_FTP··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
A Minecraft Mod that outputs the Stats of the players onto a website (I made it use APIs, so an app or CLI tool would be easy to create later on).

This is my first Minecraft Mod and the first project i made that interacts with the network, has logins/accounts and does APIs.

I am really not good and thus the UI (far worse on mobile) and especially the Code is bad, but i would have never expected to get it working at all, much less this functional. But i am still far from done, i still want to improve the overall code quality, add the inventory and ender chest, achievements (maybe even custom ones so vanilla clients can earn and view them without having to change anything locally. IDK yet) and more.

If someone wants a small demo, i have it running on my server to test while I am developing at: https://grisu-ftp.de (If you find any issues lmk :)

While this is by far not as cool as the other stuff on here i still would like to show it off and gather some first feedback. This is my first Java project that goes above the Standard stuff in school like scanners/calculators and so I have probably done obvious beginner mistakes.

Grisu_FTP··on German implementation of eIDAS will require an Apple/Google account to function
While this is HEAVILY off-topic i just have to say it.

"common knowledge that you can't grant any trust to the client" is the exact reason it annoys me so much when peoples solution to cheaters in video games is basically just "Rootkit my pc please"

As long as the anticheat is Client sided, you shouldnt put trust in it.

Grisu_FTP··on The Windows equivalents of the most used Linux commands
"Just because it's the mess we are all intimately familiar with, doesn't make it less of a mess." I kinda feel like you could apply the statement more to powershell tho.

I just dont see how Remove-Item is superior to rm and thats just the first example that came to mind (Atleast there are aliases for most stuff afaik so i guess its not AS bad).

I also just googled and there seem to be 3-4 different commands (not including the aliases) that do EXACTLY the same thing, atleast the Microsoft article used 1:1 the same description for all of them.

Grisu_FTP··on The Windows equivalents of the most used Linux commands
Its very likely that its just because i have almost no experience with powershell meanwhile i have now ~4-5 years of dailying linux but i just find the powershell commands to be very cumbersome to use. They are wayyy to long and descriptive instead of just 2-4 letters, there are 500 different commands for very specific uses instead of 10 tools that you can use and combine todo almost everything and if i recall correctly (my memory might trick me here tho) the errors are far less readable at a first glance and fill the entire terminal for simple things. CMD meanwhile feels like bash.

Most of my issues with it are probably just skill issues tho since like i said i dont really use or know it alot so i am happy to be corrected :) I mean if every Windows Sysadmin tells me how great powershell is, i cant just assume that they all are wrong (Or maybe its just the only way todo something thats otherwise simple over the terminal on windows, idk)

Grisu_FTP··on The Claude Code Leak
Well to be honest, even 5% would probably be too much for me (even tho i dont know the pricing of tokens or consumption of tokens)

I would just want to test around a bit locally, maybe let it do its thing over a weekend just to see the result and then stop it again

Grisu_FTP··on The Claude Code Leak
Afaik you can run Claude Code locally but every single demo i see uses it exclusively with apis, so are the local models already good enough to be worth it or is the only reasonable use for claude code with cloud models?
Grisu_FTP··on My MacBook keyboard is broken and it's insanely expensive to fix
Well even if my Framework would explode it wouldnt be THAT big of a deal to me, i would just move over to my ps5 or steamdeck for the time and since i dont really go outside i would have to wait for the shipment anyway. Only scenario where it would be troubling is if it happened during the rare weeks where i am not home due to being a bit away in school but even then i dont think i would just buy an entirely new laptop and instead just write on paper for the 3-4 remaining days.

So for me fixing a keyboard i spilled cola on fast, cheap and without sending the device away is far far far more important than replacing an entire laptop when it disintegrates into dust.

Grisu_FTP··on My MacBook keyboard is broken and it's insanely expensive to fix
It seems to be definitly higher but their support always just send a replacement with no issues to me.

My first GPU had an issue where the fans had a really annoying whirring sound and it got replaced.

I had a (pre-)release motherboard (one of the last FW16 pre-order batches) which had an issue with uneven heat on the CPU, also got replaced.

In both cases i could just use the Laptop like normal until the new parts arrived so i had no "downtime"

Grisu_FTP··on My MacBook keyboard is broken and it's insanely expensive to fix
While i think the usecase of a Macbook and a Framework are really different i will always be thankfull to framework for how easy they make it.

Broke my keyboard, a few days later i had a new one that didnt even take a minute to swap. Wanted to upgrade my GPU twice, didnt even take 10 minutes. Biggest difficulty was swapping the motherboard, but even that was easy.

The ports i need change all the time, and i can just swap them all the time :D

While a framework might be a bit expensive, overpriced even, i think the repairability and upgradeability is worth it for me

Grisu_FTP··on Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at kernel with massive speed gains
Thank you for the thorough reply :)

I really like the comments on HN, they are very often really interesting and you actually often learn something new that actually matters.

Grisu_FTP··on Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at kernel with massive speed gains
I just talked about using it on Desktop mode like a PC. I never said anything about doing business on it or using it as your Work PC.

Even the announcement "trailer" of the steammachine showed it getting used on a Computer monitor with mouse and keyboard in desktop mode. They even said they want to improve the "Desktop mode only" experience iirc and for there more apps than just games are important.

And i personally probably wouldnt have bought a steamdeck if it wasnt possible to just go into desktop mode and do whatever.

Grisu_FTP··on Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at kernel with massive speed gains
Also a big part of the marketing for the SteamMachine/SteamDeck/SteamFrame is that it has a desktop mode and can be used like a pc, so i think they also have an interest in that
Grisu_FTP··on Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at kernel with massive speed gains
Wouldnt it be possible to extract the files you need and sort of "repackage" it for linux?

I have no idea how electron apps look "internally" but it doesnt sound too bad.

Sort of like you can unzip .deb files and use them somewhere else, if what i heard was correct (never tried it myself)

Grisu_FTP··on Microsoft's 'Xbox Mode' Coming to Windows 11 PCs Next Month
AFAIK this is not like the steamdeck where it unloads the entire desktop for better performance, its basically just a fullscreen app if its the same thing those windows handhelds got (And this is what it looks like to me).
Grisu_FTP··on 10% of Firefox crashes are caused by bitflips
IIRC Linus Torvalds said in the Linus Tech Tips video he was in that he thinks many of the bluescreens Windows gets a bad rep for are actually bitflips that happen due to most desktops not using ECC-Memory.

Since i have seen this video this question has been in my mind from time to time.

Grisu_FTP··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
Even if I disregard all the shady connections that are obviously total coincidences, it still wouldnt feel better they worked together at all. You should only partner with a company if you are 100% certain it fits.

Grisu_FTP··on Gemini 3.1 Pro
I dont have a real special usecase, i just use it whenever i think it will give better results than googling or thinking or i dont feel like getting annoyed by cookie popups.

And i dont think gpt3 was best, but it felt like it actually listened. Now i tell it: "You did this and this wrong, i specifically told u the exact opposite. Can you please do what i asked you?" And then it says something like: "Oh yes my bad, you are right and very very smart to have caught that you must be a super genius. I will now do what you asked me" Does the same wrong thing again. and again and again.

I ask it to fix a mistake, it tells me it fixed it, gives 1:1 the same thing with more errors.

It also feels like it forgets mid convo way faster than it did.

Grisu_FTP··on Gemini 3.1 Pro
Somehow the models apparently get better and better every week, but every time i try to use them they get worse.

Am I the issue? Am i just misremembering the early times because it was a new thing?

Grisu_FTP··on MuMu Player (NetEase) silently runs 17 reconnaissance commands every 30 minutes
This is why im always feeling bad when putting mobile versions of games i love made by netease on my phone. Where i felt especially bad was Dead by Daylight mobile. Persona 5X is not made by NetEase but i still dont have a good feeling about them.

I would think they would be more restricted in what they can collect on a Phone OS (android in my case) but i still wonder if there is some way to fully isolate shady apps.

Im not too deep into USA politics and have very very bad memory so i dont remember how it went down. The Wikipedia article you linked says it was signed by trump.

>and then withheld files.

So did he sign that willingly in the end? Did he have to sign it? Did he cave because he said publicly he would?
