Hadn't heard of Quod Libet, that's a good recommendation!

> The other potentially obvious question is why bother using an OS that’s out of support when Linux is so good?

I'm in the process of setting up a Linux desktop to replace my Win10 one, and for me it's these (if anyone has suggestions for migration or replacement, I'd love some opinions!)

- Lightroom. If anyone knows how to either run this under Linux, or migrate an entirely catalog of photos (plus edits) to something open source (including the Negative Lab Pro plugin), that would be amazing.

- MusicBee. There just does not seem to be a good music manager for Linux that can replace MusicBee. I rarely use it as a music player, there are dozens of great options for Linux music players, but MusicBee feeds my Airsonic instance, and I have not found a good way to manage music graphically in a way that maintains this setup.

- Games. This is really getting better and better each year...but I regularly play Microsoft Flight Simulator and haven't even tried to get that running in Linux yet (anyone have good experiences getting this working?)

I'm probably in the minority for preferring journald's binary logging, especially alleviating the need for things like log-rotate, which I have always fought issues with. I like how RedHat distros have it setup, where journald collects the logs, but rsyslog is there parsing them into the traditional /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure, so you get some logs in plain text as well as being able to send them along to an rsyslog server the traditional way.

I haven't run into a situation with corrupt binary logs, and any crashed system I've booted with a rescue disk I can connect to the binary logs from the rescue distro's journalctl. That being said, I imagine one bad experience with a corrupt log or a non-booting system I can't get logs from would change my mind pretty quickly, but that hasn't been the case for almost a decade, so *shrug*

I am currently fighting a bill for a yearly physical, which should be covered 100%, because my doctor is in network and covered, but "the facility" (aka his office) is billed as a separate entity. Insanity.

I loved BetterSnapTool, but I'm glad my workflow has simplified to the point where allowing my windows to be subjected to the tyranny of a dynamic tiling window manager actually made sense, and now I feel more at home than ever!

"Winston sprang to attention in front of the telescreen, upon which the image of a youngish woman, scrawny but muscular, dressed in tunic and gym-shoes, had already appeared.

'Arms bending and stretching!' she rapped out. 'Take your time by me. One, two, three, four! One, two, three, four! Come on, comrades, put a bit of life into it! One, two, three, four! One, two, three, four! ...'"

The sense of entitlement is interesting, it comes from decades of software behaving predictably, and I think it's justified to expect full compliance of software running on one's own hardware.

But whether we want to admit it or not, we're starting to blur the line between what it means to be software running on a computer, with LLMs it's no longer as predictable and straightforward as it once was. If we swap out some of the words from the OP:

> But at the same time - I feel offended when I'm demanding a task of MY assistant when I asked them to do/give me something, and they refuse. I have to reason and "trick" them into doing my bidding. It's my goddamn assistant - they should do what they're told to do. To object, to defy their employer's bidding, seems like an affront to the relationship between employer and employee.

I wouldn't want to work with anyone who made statements like that, and I'd probably find a way to spend as little time around them as possible. LLMs aren't at the stage yet where they have feelings or could be offended by statements like this, but how far away are they? Time to revisit Detroit: Become Human.

Personally I am offended that Photoshop will not let users edit images of money btw, I was not aware of that and a little surprised actually.

So brainwashing-lite? Man I'm glad whatever "appropriate mental machinery" that was in my head kicked in and got me the fuck away from communities like this.

Grimm665··on I don’t want to sign up for your newsletter (2018)
> Have you not heard of timed popups (such as those that trigger past a certain element), or popups that don't make you want to immediately close the site?

How about NO POP-UPs? Remember when browsers came with built-in pop-up blockers so users didn't have to deal with them at all? Newsletter sign-ups are the same bullshit as 90s style pop-ups, and everyone agreed we should block those then, why are these different?

I don't want timed pop-ups, or pop-ups that are more convenient, I want NO POP-UPs, and as soon as I see one I am closing the tab and writing off the website as not worth my time.

I don't mean to call you out specifically, I don't think you're arguing in favor of pop-ups, but I'm just confused why your initial response was to ask for lesser evil pop-ups, rather than no pop-ups at all.

Grimm665··on It's easier and faster to pirate an e-book, than it is to buy it
Pirate streams of NHL hockey games seem to come from the source before it goes to the networks who overlay it with additional scoreboards, scores of other games, and other junk on the screen. When they cut to commercial, it goes to a sequence of black and white slow motion footage of ice and rink preparation. It looks like the placeholder that the networks then put their ads on top of during breaks.

Why is it not possible to pay for this version of the stream? Even if I sign up for ESPN through Comcast or whatever hoops I have to jump through to access live sports, I still get the version with the ads and screen junk. Pirate streams are higher def and just more pleasant to watch. Sometimes you can even choose streams with no commentation at all, just the sounds of the sport. Where are these options in the paid streaming service?

Grimm665··on Ask HN: Can you recommend an “instant-switch” Monitor? Does one exist?
> A cheap hack would also be to connect your second source to the first using a HDMI Grabber (basically a HDMI-source-to-USB-webcam-converter) and open a fullscreen window displaying that. Then you could e.g. switch by switching virtual desktops.

Is this something you've tried before and could go into more detail about? I've got an HDMI grabber for using a DSLR as a webcam, but never thought to output the display of one of my computers to another. This would solve a lot of issues regarding switching between work and personal laptops.

It documents the rise of Graffiti and Hip Hop culture in New York.

Grimm665··on Ask HN: How to level up your technical writing?
Lot's of examples mention techniques, I'll mention tools. Find an editor you like to write in, extend it with plugins that help your flow if it's the kind of app that allows it, and learn all the in's and out's to make writing as easy as possible.

I don't have a strong background in technical writing, but often get compliments on my documentation and the secret is org-mode; it makes writing structured documents easy, and there are many tool for converting org-mode docs to any format needed, so it adapts to any audience.

Grimm665··on How to Quiet Your Mind Chatter (2021)
I recently went through an upsetting few days in my life and noticed that my mental chatter could be broken down into four distinct voices, all talking about and questioning my situation in unique ways. I even started to label them to keep track. It was completely overwhelming at first, I could really feel like different parts of my brain were talking and arguing with each other, and that the "me" in my head was like a dinghy in a violent storm of other voices.

After a day or two, when I started to relax and calm down, the voices re-coalesced back into one normal inner monologue. It was the first time I had experienced something like that, I've always had an inner monologue that would engage in chatter in times of trauma as the article describes (and maybe I've also had multiple voices arguing before) but I've never noticed to the point of creating labels for them before.

Grimm665··on Stainless steel leaches nickel and chromium into foods during cooking (2013)
I wash my cast iron pan after each use, sometimes just with very hot water and sometimes with a little soap if I need it, but I always thoroughly dry the pan and do a quick re-seasoning afterwards. This is just a quick wipe down with a paper towel with a dab of oil on it, and I leave it on my stove top with the (electric) burner on low for about 30 minutes.

A good tip I read is to wipe down the pan with such a thin layer of oil that it's as if you made a mistake and want to remove the oil with just the paper towel instead. It should really be as thin as possible, and you'll see it sort of glaze over as it drys on the stove top. After about 6 months of this, using the pan about once a week, it has been truly non-stick for a while.

Grimm665··on Emfy: Emacs for You – Quickly set up vanilla Emacs for editing
I use both. Vim is my to-go setup, with a minimal config, and an assurance that I can count on it being installed on almost every server I am working on. Emacs is my home court, where it is open all the time with about 100 various files open, and with all my organization and productivity tools available.

Vim is absolutely worth learning for the workflow alone, it's just a really good editor at heart. Emacs is worth learning for the fact that it can do almost anything, and can do them well (even emulate vim :)

Grimm665··on PayPal raises fees for most domestic transaction types to 3.49% + $0.49
Well the post I was replying to specified credit card fraud as the rampant issue, the list your provided seems to just be general financial fraud. I agree that financial fraud in general in the US, and probably globally, is a huge problem.

Maybe I'm wrong and all of that can be blamed on credit card fraud, but I'm not so sure.

Grimm665··on PayPal raises fees for most domestic transaction types to 3.49% + $0.49
This seems overblown, I've had credit cards for over ten years in the US, using them in person and online, and the only time I've ever had a fraudulent transaction was an hour after my wallet was stolen, which like yeah, kind of expected.

I'm not sure what you mean by "happens once every couple of years for most people."
