GranularRecipe··on How deep is the brain? The shallow brain hypothesis
The reason for deep learning is that shallow networks are very hard (or impossible) to train. In that sense, long time of training is evidence for shallow networks.
GranularRecipe··on Terry Pratchett’s hard drive steamrolled in 2017 had '10 unfinished novels'
The right of the general public to read the unpublished novels might override the wish of a dead person. Maybe.
GranularRecipe··on The Paratethys Sea was the largest lake in Earth’s history
I don't think that "lifetime of the universe" is well-defined. The universe would still exist after the heat death.
GranularRecipe··on Stop whining about “The EU Cookie Policy” and improve your ways
Good point. Sounds like the start of a fun conversation between data protection officers (DPO) and data protection agencies (DPA).
GranularRecipe··on Stop whining about “The EU Cookie Policy” and improve your ways
> "To make this very clear: user/visitor consent is only needed for data going to 3rd parties."

I think this statement is categorically false. Art. 6 GDPR (https://gdpr-info.eu/art-6-gdpr/) lists exhausively the reasons for lawful processing of personal data which applies not only to cookies, but also IP addresses etc. The "cookie consent" addresses Art. 6 Point 1(a). Whether third-parties (data processors) are involved is irrelevant, e.g. if I need to transfer personal data to my accountant, it falls under b, c (or d).

GranularRecipe··on Kamby – A programming language based on Lisp that doesn't seem like Lisp
If I visit the website, Firefox warns of potential security risk because the connection is not encrypted.
GranularRecipe··on Open source ‘protestware’ harms Open Source
Open source is driven by many opioniated and idealistic people who also worry about the current geopolitical development. They might make their opinions known in a non-destructive manner.

You might not like it, fair enough, but expressing one's opinion in commit messages is neither childish nor an instrumentalisation by any government.

GranularRecipe··on Ask HN: Is pre-birth the same state as post-life?
Nitpicking here: Wouldn't the terms pre/post-life or pre-birth and post-death be more consistent?
GranularRecipe··on The Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant (2005)
I think the dragon-tyrant here should be interpreted as a metaphor specifically for death through aging, and not death generally. Because death is not any single condition (representable through a token), but the vast set of states that vastly outnumber the set of "living states".

Solving the problem of aging wouldn't solve the problem death, curing all sickness wouldn't solve the problem of death, preventing all accidents wouldn't solve the problem of death.

Indeed, if we get philosophical (and transhumanist), we need to find a reasonable definition of death (and life), possibly detached from the necessity of continuous physical existence.

GranularRecipe··on Bitcoin mining has driven up energy bills for residents and businesses
A lot of the comments are whataboutism and strawman arguments (big corporations, fossil fuel, military). To de-emotionalise the discussion, it makes sense to separate the two aspects:

1. Is the argument from the linked article factually (and semantically) true? 2. If that is the case, what are the moral and political implications?

GranularRecipe··on Human Rights Are Not a Bug
I think, zpeti's point is that human rights should be privileges (or liberties) and not claims in the Hohfeldian system (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/rights/#FormRighHohfAnalS...).

There is a conflation between "correlatives" (a privilege means that no-one else has a claim to prevent you from exercising the privilege, whereas if you have a claim, then someone has the duty to fulfill it) and enforcement which requires state intervention.

And punish bad behaviour, reduce miscommunication / improve coordination.
GranularRecipe··on Why WebAssembly is innovative even outside the browser
Solomon Hykes, author of Docker: If WASM+WASI existed in 2008, we wouldn't have needed to created Docker. That's how important it is. Webassembly on the server is the future of computing. A standardized system interface was the missing link. Let's hope WASI is up to the task! cf https://twitter.com/solomonstre/status/1111004913222324225?l...
GranularRecipe··on Leap Smear
The leap second is not for majority of people, but for scientists and astronomers so that they can use UTC. Cf. https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/leap-se...
GranularRecipe··on Leap Smear
Second is the SI base unit of time. Whether it makes sense is a different question, but it is not "arbitrary".

GranularRecipe··on El Salvador makes Bitcoin legal tender
I wonder to what degree this is related to the prevalence of organized crime (Bitcoin being a 'currency' of the black market).
GranularRecipe··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
Anti-Zionists deny being anti-Semites, claiming they make a clear distinction between Israel as a political entity and Jewish people in general, and are only against the former.

Bobb conflated Israeli politics with Jewishness and thus making the latter responsible for the actions of the former.

The fact that Israel defines itself as a Jewish state does not mean that all Jews see themselves as Israelis or are pro-Israel.

It is like criticising Arabs for the actions of Saudi-Arabia, or any other Arab (or Muslim) country, which is unfortunately an recurring theme in the West and justifiably regarded as a form of racism (Islamophobia).

Due to the high mutation rates of tumor cells, it is unlikely the "same" DNA. And it definitely does not live forever if it wipes out populations. That degree of aggressiveness is not a good survival strategy.
GranularRecipe··on Crony Beliefs
I think "crony belief" is a negatively connotated misnomer. A better term would be "coordinated belief" which enables us to coordinate our actions in a very complex system. According to his logic, most of the scientific theories I hold to be true are "crony beliefs" in that -- in practical terms -- I can't/don't test them.
