So what to do you? Do you even code javascript now or you use coffeescript and it's object creation strats (or do you use clojure, or whatever).
And another question: Do you use JSLint or something similar? What about if you want to validate javascriopt 1.7/1.8 syntax.
Basically this "cure" is of the type where the guy was about to die, he underwent a procedure that had a 50% or so survival rate, upon success he is cured of most strains of HIV.
Hey its great, we know this thing can be killed. Lets see if we can put that knowledge to work. But this is not a generic "cure".
I like this before/after illustration: http://blogs-images.forbes.com/andygreenberg/files/2010/12/b... thats pretty cool because while I can see both images and the numbers in them, the second is so much more vivid.
What is better about employee? You have a regular paycheck. Economy is shitty? You still get it, or get fired. Economy is booming? Still get it. Didn't make a sale this month? Still get it. Contractor is not so consistent.
ChromeOS is basically bigger than an iPad plus a keyboard. Battery life is close.
ChromeOS starting before you even think of opening the lid is moot. Nobody has problems with iPad startup. EVER. Unless you depleted 100%.
A child can figure out the iPad.
Ok lets rewind a bit.... @$#$%$#%#%$#%#$.... ok...
So basically you have TWO choices for online connectivity: Wifi OR Verizon. Verizon plans are bullshit at best. They are overpriced 3g pieces of shit. If I could pay for 1 gig and use as I please until it runs out, great, but NOOOO, its 1 gig expires in 1 month. A 1 day unlim pass for 10 bucks? Holy shit!
Clear wireless gives a unlimited usb wifi 4g modem for 30 bucks a month. Thats right 4g and its pretty much 2-4 bars EVERYWHERE in nyc. And no data caps. But of course can't use that shit since the chromeos does not support it.
I guess its all over the place. A crippled iPad + keyboard. A crippled laptop since you are limited to choices for wireless isp (can't even put in a 4g card because there is no slot there). Hold on it gets better.
The wifi reciever gets 3 fucking bars of service when sitting RIGHT NEXT TO THE WIRELESS ROUTER. Thats a problem. There is also no ethernet jack so at work since I can't set up microsoft authentication for our wifi (not supported), but can use an ethernet jack, I can't use the laptop (yay). Lets keep going.
> Web technologies suck... bla bla bla...
Yea not only do they suck the performance on that laptop is ATTROCIOUS. Those webapps need to be optimized to no fucking end before they can be run "smoothly" in any sense of the word. And adobe needs to improve linux flash performance significantly. So far the only use I got out of the chrome os laptop is my daughter playing the PBS spelling games. She loves them. Except in 5 minutes memory leaks kick in and the laptop is unusable.
Basically this laptop solves zero percent of my needs (ok fine 10%)
a) Building a portfolio: xyz sites use my designs therefore i rule.
b) Building relationships: xyz site uses my designs therefore i rule, which is why next time they need a design they will call me.
c) Show off: xyz site uses my designs therefore i rule and i will post it on my site, which is why people will see what I do any anytime people want a design i will be a known name and have a portfolio to show for it.
He'd do it for free, but nobody will take him seriously.
Now.
Where was I, oh yes, I will accept this 50 grand challenge. Submit proof that you are worth at least 10 grand.
c - because you can always do it in c
java - because there is tons of work, and its a damn good language
lisp - because sometimes i just need a language with which i can build another language.
Do we have anyone with experience with FDB on hn?
Bigger concern: How exportable is this database (my guess is very, since its a resful api to access it all) because at some point if they fail, you going to need to move to your own cluster.
By that sort of logic anything and everything you can imagine is real and anything and everything can get to our universe at any time for any reason with any consequence to it's arrival.
Heres the flaw in the logic:
a) There is an infinite number of universes: sure lets accept this.
b) There exists at least 1 santa clause: sure lets accept this. There is infinite universes so therefore what we consider a santa clause could be a roach in another universe.
c) There must exist at least 1 S.C. which can travel between universes and into ours. Lets assume this is not true. Why? Because we have yet to prove that such a thing is currently possible. Lets move away from proving. There are two possibilities here:
Possibility a: It is possible to travel between universes at any time. Which means that by probability there will be at least one santa that wants to travel to our univese to our plannet at this exact time.
Possibility b: It is impossible to travel between universes, and to keep it simple, to our current time and location. Which means that given infinite iterations, the chance that santa is coming this year is zero.
A or B, the rest is faith. In any case I tend to believe B otherwise I am waiting on my unicorn damnit!
TGJ: To disprove you:
a) Santa can store items in his sack which may be actually stored in a way which does not take up 3 dimentional space.
b) Santa might be a roach (see comments above) so he just needs to visit 24 times for a few minutes with his entire immediate family.
c) It is also possible that santa actually take a VERY long time to delivery gifts one at a time. He travels to each house individually and leaves, at which point he time travels to the exact moment of arrival at the previous house, thus he delivers ALL gives simultaneously.
For a development position you need two pieces of CRITICAL mental capabilities:
1) Problem solving: How you approach problems.
2) Coding skill: How you implement the solutions given in (1).
If you don't have 2, you suck. 2 is not limited to a language.
HOWEVER knowing the nitty gritty details of a language is actually very critical often. Imagine you never worked on ruby before, heard of Rails, read a book, made a hello world program, thats that. You are a good programmer. Now you apply for a job where you are expected to make an RoR application that will serve a minimum of 1 million hits per hour (they are solving the scaling problem). You got to make the code clusterable and efficient since in this case buying 100 servers is out of the question (lack of funds). Sorry you are going to need more than a ruby newbie for this one.
Now I am in no way implying that a good developer can't write an amazing ruby program having never touched ruby before, quite the contrary. That developer just might not be able to start as a senior ruby developer. Probably give that person 1 year with ruby and you got yourself a guru. But you need some minimums.
I guess what some people don't realize when hiring is that don't expect miracles from someone until approximately 1 yr after employment. That is when they understand the system, frameworks the system uses, the development strategy, problems, etc. This is when you start to see a good developer make amazing contributions. If you are hiring now because you need something shipped in 2 months, you have wrong reasons a person who knows the frameworks is going to have a better start, but its not a solution.
Everything else is: Do you know spring? What is IOC? Ok good enough. Do you know Hybernate? What is ORM?
Guess you've been looking for the wrong job or you've been giving the job search to the wrong person. If at an interview someone just whips out "Lets get into the nitty gritty details of your struts2 knowledge" I would just leave, unless I don't have food at home and no money to pay for more.
An aircraft carrier with destroyed pumps, engines, everything, as long as the structure is more or less ok, will stay afloat. Wait... An aircraft carrier can withstand a nuclear missile, and then keep sailing (the people are going to be dead through). This was proved in the 50s (old tech baby) when the government tested nuking a retired navy fleet of carriers and destroyers to see if they will sink. They didn't understand radiation, but the ships still sailed home. 5% of the fleet was destroyed.
Lets look at the stealth bomber example as noted by btilly. While its true if the computer dies, the plane falls like a rock. However the pilot can still eject. The ejection mechanism is not linked to the computer except for maybe the automatic mode.
I think the two "worstly" engineered vehicles are airliners and helicopters. Small planes can land without power due to the aerodynamics and weight, as long as hydrolics work. Airliners are not able to glide so well, nor are they light.
Airliners though do still demonstrate the redundant designs, each critical system has a backup which is a completely different in both their physical location and approach to solving the problem. If one fails the other can take over because a completely different set of conditions will cause the other to fail.
I think Battlestar Galactica did a good job showing REAL engineering. Those ships took a lot of pounding before they got destroyed. The only time the battlestars were just easily obliterated (like the enterprise was in every other episode) is when they were hooked up with a new computer system that connected every part of the ship to itself (and the computer was compromised) this was in the very first episode. Galactica survived BECAUSE it had all of it's systems disconnected and redundant, so when some shut down, people took over operations of that one back in manual mode. Hell part of the plot was that galactica was being sabotaged. In startrek sabotage was "opse the ship is going to explode now" while in galactica they just had some damage, or had their fuel blow up, or something (can't remember 100% of the details) but point being that you can't just blow the damn ship up. Maybe a civilian ship, not the warship. The only stupid thing in galactica was the cylon battleships had that central column which was succeptable to being blown up and destroying the ship, and that resurrection ship which if destroyed would fuck up resurrection for an entire cluster. I would have expected redundant resurrection ships/hubs.
In any case, the most unbelievable part of this whole ordeal is that you have a very large ship, full of civilians, armed to the teeth, the damn flagship of the fleet. That is all. Since when does the united states (or any country EVER) pack their destroyers or stealth bombers with civilians? Preach all you want about "exploration", in a real scenario you would have a mostly unarmed science vessel armed to the teeth with sensor gear, and a warship next to it for protection. Hell maybe the science vessel docks in the warship most of the time. The second an enemy approaches, the science vessel is already in high warp with every bit of stealth engaged getting the hell away from there until the warship signals them that it's safe to return.
In any case, you can easily generate an ant script or whatever build groovy uses to either generate the vararg code or the insaneo source code as we see here. The point being that this should only happen when compiling groovy for java 1.4.
They did not give their customers what the customers wanted.
Basically at first rim was the only game in town. Its BB or Palm. BB did it better, cooler, CHEAPER (ish). It was perfect. Everyone who was anyone had a BB.
Now a smart company would continue the trend: Keep innovating. Look at YOUR CUSTOMERS. Where do they suffer? How to make everything better? 83XX series is a perfect example. They made a major upgrade to their os and put it on the shittiest hardware (see the $99 android tablet, thats basically the 83xx, ok the 83xx was usable). That phone was shit at best.
As a company realizing that they WILL be dethroned unless they innovate, they would have put better hardware, worked more on their platform, attracted developers, etc. App store shmapp store they coulda done SOMETHING. The blackberry world store came out AFTER the apple app store and it was a lot worse, and didn't even come pre-installed. Basically version 1 did not asynchronously fetch images, making browsing anything other than top 10 list impossible. Not to mention that what was on top 10 2 yrs ago is still there, nothing comes out for BB.
RIM is a nothing company who had a good idea. They are losing steam. They have no good hardware. They have no good software. In fact name me 1 application for the BB that is in any way exclusive to BB and is useful.
Long story short. RIM stagnated and by the time they opened their eyes, it was too late.
I had a major passion for it at the time (pre college) and had I taken this advice from everyone in my family, I would probably be working in McDonalds at this point.
Israel has good security, better than we have, for longer, with less tech, and no liberties violated, and people get through the airport faster. Wait, its cheaper too. Shit with all the cards stacked in their favor we look like idiots not at least modeling security after them. Sure we can improve on it, lets catch up first then 1-up em.
Same with the TSA. We need a 100% national opt-out day. Not scanners. I mean same statement as the guy made. EVERYONE. The airlines will go nuts as most their passengers will be missing from the flights. Or something to that extent. Its not fighting back, its just refusal to give them power. And I bet we can ask for refunds. Nowhere on the ticket does it say that a delay in the airport due to constitutional rights violations warrants a no-refund.
Just like with 9/11 now is the same issue and we must handle it as Americans, like we did threats before it. Never surrender even an ounce of freedom, they will take our freedom from our cold dead hands only.
I have to quote Franklin on this one "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
More descriptive of whats going on, so people actually click and listen :P
